On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul talks to James Conroy-Finn about music, labeling & how it all relates to the meaning of life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Labels can be valuable. I’ve had friends diagnosed with ADHD who has found this useful. Perhaps they don’t experience all of the symptoms that other people that have been labelled with ADHD might experience, but it gives them some structure & ideal of where they fit in to the universe & why they may have struggled at school, for example, where they may have been labelled a naughty child.
  • Every human being, regardless of culture, potentially has an ingrained appreciation for the structure of music & the relationship between notes. Some of that comes down to biology & the way our brains work to interpret those signals, as it responds in certain ways to certain frequencies. Layering culture on top makes it more fascinating.
  • Our musical taste doesn’t change that much after our formative years. The music we tend to love the most is the stuff that we listened to as teenagers because we’ve formed a connection to it: Your first kiss, first car, exam results, those major life events are often associated with some piece of music which can take you back to that place. Later in life we have less of a tendency to explore as much and find those songs, which comes back to the brain.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Our sense of smell can take us back to a place in our past, & so can music'.

‘The correct state of the brain is the teenage brain, we should be a little bit more willing to take risks, things should be a little bit more exciting & passionate'.

‘You’ve got to put in the work. If you do put in the work & you invest in yourself you will come out better at the end of it, but it’s scary, it’s daunting to face that demon directly in the eyes & try to challenge it'.

‘I’m not a huge fan of the term ‘genius’, I think often it diminishes the effort that people put into the work that they do'.
