GESPONSERT
Chef Shuai Wang was the runner-up on the 22nd season of Bravo’s Top Chef and is the force behind two standout restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina—Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ—where he brings together the flavors of his childhood in Beijing and the spirit of the South in some pretty unforgettable ways. He grew up just a short walk from Tiananmen Square, in a tiny home with no electricity or running water, where his grandmother often cooked over charcoal. Later, in Queens, New York, his mom taught herself to cook—her first dishes were a little salty, but they were always made with love. And somewhere along the way, Shuai learned that cooking wasn’t just about food—it was about taking care of people. After years working in New York kitchens, he made his way to Charleston and started building something that feels entirely his own. Today, we’re talking about how all those experiences come together on the plate, the family stories behind his cooking, and what it’s been like to share that journey on national TV. We're chatting about Lorna's late-in-life ADHD diagnosis (which is relative compared to those who are getting their own diagnosis after well past their 50's), and how mapping it backwards she can see how an adolescence of complications could've been better understood as the trappings of ADHD, but instead became all too common masking traits and a sense of being 'less than'. ADHD diagnosis amongst adults are becoming more and more common, although the infrastructure to get these important tests done are still far from acceptable in terms of time and access to professionals. If you're interested in learning more about ADHD then there'll almost certainly be local resources available to you, and a conversation with your GP is always recommended. I'm also informed TikTok has a huge ADHD community, so if you're on the tok, go check that out! - You can find Lorna on IG @lorna_ashcroft_nowicki - You can find me on IG @johnliot and my personal website is JohnLiot.com - Music by 'Sizzlebird' Opening track - 'I'm Glad You Exist' Closing track - 'Lost Lands' Album: Horizons Bandcamp - https://sizzlebird1.bandcamp.com/album/horizons…

On today's episode of IGYE I'm joined by comedian, voice-over-artist and podcaster extraordinaire, Tawny Platis. IMPORTANT NOTICE (14/06/2025): Death is Hilarious is now defunct at the website has been compromised. Do NOT visit it. Tawny hosts the fantastic, Death is Hilarious podcast (now defunct), which serves as a safe space for those going through grief or the morbidly curious to learn more about how grief can manifest in a person's life and how to navigate it. If that sounds 'a bit much' and quite heavy for a podcast, fear not, because if Tawny was to receive any criticism from her work around death it'd be more likely to be that she isn't taking it seriously enough. But that's the crux of her identity and why her podcast is so wildly popular - in approaching grief with complete honesty and sincerity, Tawny, learnt that humour was integral to her ability to process and manage the intense emotions that come with losing a loved one. We chat about the inception of her podcast, the story of love and loss which took her down this path and why, if you're suffering with grief, comedy could be an option, but maybe don't go straight into writing stand-up material about it! - You can find Tawny on IG @tawnyplatis - You can find me on IG @johnliot and my personal website is JohnLiot.com - Music by 'Sizzlebird' Opening track - 'I'm Glad You Exist' Closing track - 'Lost Lands' Album: Horizons Bandcamp - https://sizzlebird1.bandcamp.com/album/horizons…

You'll hear a bit more about that in the episode itself, but suffice to say, when it comes to the heroic origin stories of musicians, apparently my hunger is not yet satiated. We're back to back with chats from fascinating women on IGYE Today's guest is artist-activist, Ally Zlatar. Ally is a Canadian-born artist currently doing a residency in Jersey with ArtHouse Jersey. She's touring her project 'The Starving Artist'; a candid, honest and often brutal selection of self-portraits that focus on and reveal her reality of living with an eating disorder. For Ally, her activism is in the form of conversations brought about through using her work as a medium for questions and awareness. She visits schools to chat to students about what eating disorders are, expelling misconceptions and facilitating growth around the subject. It was such a treat to have Ally on the podcast to talk about her artistic process as well as the importance of the subject matter she focuses on. IGYE is back! After it's annual HouseGuys hiatus, the show where I don't rate people on arbitrary scales returns. We're back and we're sexier than ever. To make good on that last sentence, today's guest; Sara Silverstein Sara is a breathwork coach living in Philadelphia, who has worked as far abroad as Bali (funnily enough, encountering and making friends with some people from Jersey!) and promotes sexual wellness for both females and males. She's also a reformed alcoholic and a big advocate of not giving a good god damn what others think and living for yourself. Such is our conversation today, where Sara takes me into the conversational world of BDSM, including topics of consensual play, the difference between being dominated and degraded and loads of other fascinating nuances to the kink scene. If not openly apparent by now, this is not a podcast for the shy of listening. Topics include heavy sexual overtones, candid mentioning of sexual violence and drug abuse. On today's episode of IGYE I'm joined by Brett Ralph. Brett is someone I met through the Falmouth and Penryn Boxing Club when I was at University. When he was 19 he was involved in a catastrophic motorbike accident which left him with injuries so severe doctors considered amputating his legs. To say Brett has come a long way since his accident would be an almost insultingly modest take. Not only did he defy medical professionals by standing unassisted; something that wasn't even considered a possibility early on his recovery. But he went far beyond that and ended up competing in and winning championship boxing matches. Brett's story of recovery is a fascinating insight into one individual's mindset and a 'never say die' mentality that helped and hindered him in equal measure. On today's episode I'm joined via Zoom by American novelist and Buddhist, David Guy. David and I connected back in 2019 when I found an article he wrote for the online publication, Tricycle. This article, originally uploaded back in 1994, was an exploration of whether the works of Alan Watts, British philosopher and key figure in bringing Eastern religions to a Western awareness during the 1950's, still held up, especially if one were to consider the criticisms levied against Watts. For years, since my own discovery of the late philosopher, I was very hesitant to search anything that might muddy the near perfect perception I held of Watts. When I eventually allowed myself to accept that Watts might not be all wisdom and Zen, it was David's article I found. Amongst other things his writing led me to accept that no, Watts was not perfect, even in regards to his religious commitments, but that the messages he espoused and the stories he shared still held tremendous value. I spoke to David via email and eventually it led us to this conversation. An insight into the life and importance of Alan Watts, how it related to David's own discovery of Buddhism and how Watts' legacy has changed from being an incredibly accessible teacher of Eastern philosophy, to 'that guy with the amazing voice who speaks over chillstep youtube videos'. - You can follow David's work and writings at www.DavidGuy.org, which holds a link to his book store. - You can follow me on instagram - @johnliot - Music by 'Sizzlebird' Album: Horizons Bandcamp - https://sizzlebird1.bandcamp.com/album/horizons…

Excessive Rumination back in your life! On today's episode I'm joined by a man and photographer I have tremendous respect for, Senior Lecturer on the Press and Editorial Photography course at Falmouth University, David White. Dave was instrumental to me surviving and thriving at University back in the glory days of 2012 - 2015. I have to hold my hands up and say I massively under appreciated Dave, and the other tutors, in terms of the photographic talent they brought to the course. Dave has been a photojournalist for over two decades and in that time has shot an incredible amount of work all over the world, his story on Russian Cosmonauts being a particular highlight. However, it's not just Dave's photographic history I'm interested in talking about, it's his viewpoint as an arts degree lecturer in 2020 and what that looks like. We talk mental health in students, the value of an arts degree, rights of passage and 'the fourth year'. You can, and absolutely should, check out Dave's work at www.nospin.com and if you've got any interest in the Press and Editorial course, for you or someone else, go to https://www.falmouth.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/press-editorial-photography for more info. Excessive Rumination, back in your life! On today's episode I'm joined by yet another good mate of mine, this one noteworthy for being as tall as me. Oh, and he's also incredible at guitar. How incredible? Well you've got to be a slice of alright to pose as Brian May for a world-wide touring Queen tribute band; I'm told their songs are difficult? Jonny's a great conversation any time he's back in Jersey, but I wanted to chat to him about his interesting career path, loving and hating the music scene and what he's learnt along the way. We also, for some reason, get into a discussion about the best way to parent pre-teen children so... stick around for that?! Jonny didn't give me any contact information so if you wanna know more about him, tough. His band, however, is UK Queen, definitely check them out - http://ukqueen.co.uk/ - Content warning: Swearing. - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. Excessive Rumination, back in your life! On today's episode I'm joined by singer/songwriter, Jared Crespel. In 2019 Jared took on a creative challenge that was after my own heart; he committed to writing a song a month for a year, literally beginning from scratch each time and having it recorded and uploaded within the month. I loved seeing this creative process develop and always had questions I wanted to ask Jared about this project. We get into that and so much more, including subjects not limited to working as a building surveyor, the stigma of coming from Jersey in the creative scene, the plight of Fatima, and we even sneak in a little natter about The Real Housewives of Jersey. - Jared's Socials Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2oNNM9ccvuQ93Bxa3TY8Hu Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jaredcrespel/ - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. Excessive Rumination, back in your life! On this episode I'm joined by marathon sea-swimmer, Andy Truscott. Andy, in 2017, became the first person to swim two laps of Jersey consecutively, a feat which, whilst absolutely incredibly, barely made island news. I met Andy shortly after that swim and we ended up collaborating together on documenting his upcoming swim, which would be for the world record for longest swim in tidal conditions. To do this, he would swim 3 consecutive laps of the island and amass a distance of over 198km. Andy is a big figure in the world of marathon sea-swimming, and is an outspoken advocate for mental health. It was a pleasure to have him on the podcast chatting about his experience of the swim, what lessons he learnt from it and how he sees the future of sea swimming in Jersey. Also, apparently he's going to get me to swim the Channel one day... - Andy's socials: facebook.com/SwimSmart - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. Excessive Rumination, back in your life! An interesting first for the show, on this episode I've invited my boss, Stuart Penn, in for a chat. No, we're not recording my performance review for an awkward listening experience; although I'm sure it would be spotless.. Stu's actually here to have about his life! Highs, lows, being a father and falling out of helicopters included. Stuart is an adaptive athlete from the UK, born with one fully-formed arm, a stump from below the elbow on the other, one partially formed leg and the other a stump just below the knee. Stuart was born this way, so adaptation has been a natural progression within his life, though it hasn't always been easy (or ever is) as we get into in the conversation. Despite challenges many of us will never face, specifically within the mundane and overlooked aspects of life, Stuart has cultivated a fascinating life for himself, travelling all over the world for his work with the armed forces, succeeding as a world-class martial artist, an incredibly motivational speaker, loving husband and loved father. He's a man I genuinely look up to and it's a pleasure to have him on the show. Hope you enjoy, it's a gooden! - Stuart's socials: http://instagram.com/pennstuart - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. Excessive Rumination, back in your life! On this episode I'm joined by friend and local politician, Sam Mézec, who is the founder and leader of Jersey's only political party; Reform Jersey. Whilst we do inevitably chat politics, both local and world-wide, this podcast is focused predominantly on who Sam is as a person, the personal challenges he's faced since being a full-time politician and what his advice to a new generation of public servant would be. Excessive Rumination back in your life! On this episode I'm joined by the infectiously happy, Monty Taft. Monty is a singer/songwriter from Jersey whom I've had the pleasure of working with several times over the last 10 years; from music videos to photoshoots to magazine features. Monty has had success far beyond that, with sets at Glastonbury and Radio 1 play. Despite playing music for the majority of his life, and having attained success within the industry, Monty has chosen to life in Jersey for now and I was curious why. Where does his influence for songwriting come from, what does he want to achieve with music and many more questions, including why he hasn't written a song about being bad at football when he was at school. Friend of the show, Lee Alexander, pops by for a chat, no more than week since he returned to Jersey after a whirlwind 9 months in Vancouver. Lee is a qualified cocktail mixologist, semi-professional poker player and snowboarding instructor; basically the career aspirations of many a 12-year-old boy. In this episode we're talking about the adage of 'the grass isn't always greener', and what that means when we apply it to large scale life changes and career choices; how we often project our insecurities into our environment, placing blame in the place rather than ourselves. Bit of swearing, so block your freakin' ears if that's a concern, but for the rest of you, sit back and enjoy! - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. We've got a doozy of an episode today! Joining me in studio is local renaissance man, Rick Jones. I was introduced to Rick as an incredibly talented and soulful songwriter, but he's known throughout the world as, literally, one of the UK's strongest men. If ever the adage of 'gentle giant' was appropriate, it's here. But don't mistake stoicism and modesty for a lack of conviction, Rick is happy to speak his truth and let others decide how they feel on that. It culminates in a fascinating conversation about life, the natural laws of reality and how we see each other. Content warning for this episode: This episode contains some swearing and we also dive into heavy topics including child abuse, pedophilia, rape culture and political ideologies. If those subjects are potentially upsetting or distressing for you then it might be worth giving this one a miss. We don't linger in any one topic too long, but it's worth being aware. - Rick's Socials: https://www.instagram.com/codexaionicus/ - If you've got any comments or questions about this episode please feel free to get in touch at my instagram, @johnliot - Sanctuary by AERØHEAD feat. Linda is five years into a professional acting career and yet, in such a short amount of time, has already worked with Marvel, acted a stunt performer on Bohemian Rhapsody and is getting pitch meetings with some of the UK's most prominent film and TV producers. She also went to mime school which is both, a thing, and fascinating.
