Welcome back to The Aethix Approach podcast! This is Season 3, Episode 9, and today, we’ve got a guest who’s been throwing around heavy iron, breaking stereotypes and spreading the good word of our lord and savior Seitan for years—Vinnie Crapello! Vinnie competes in the 165 lb weight class as a drug-tested powerlifter and member of the PlantBuilt powerlifting team, with a 460 lb squat, 280 lb bench and 529 lb deadlift as his current best competition lifts. But he’s not just a powerlifter—he also has a background in CrossFit and wrestling, making him a well-rounded strength athlete that would make Macho Man Randy Savage proud. In this episode, we’re covering his athletic background, his experience at the 2024 Mr. America powerlifting competition, and his best lifts and training philosophy. We’ll also dive into the conjugate method, the difference between self-programming vs. having a coach, and what it’s like competing alongside other top vegan lifters. Of course, we’ll get into his vegan journey, his go-to plant-based foods (Boca, Beyond, or Gardein?), and even how the band Earth Crisis and other hardcore music played a role in his switch. Plus, we tackle vegan activism, how plant-based food culture has changed, and why the growth of veganism seems to be stagnant lately. And because this is The Aethix Approach, we’re diving into deeper topics too—hypermasculinity in fitness, PED use on social media, why tough guys are often the nicest, and what’s next for Vinnie. It’s a packed episode with plenty of real talk and insights, so grab your protein shake, get comfy, and let’s jump in to it with Vinnie Crapello! 🎧🔥 TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Episode preview with Vinnie 00:30 - Intro to Podcast 01:00 - Intro to Vinnie Crapello and overview of this episode 2:15 - Episode start - who is Vinnie? 6:30 - Vinnie's athletic background 11:00 - Plantbuilt and the 2024 Mr. America powerlifting competition results 15:00 - Vinnie's weight class, best numbers and programming 18:45 - General programming vs. having a coach 23:15 - Vinnie's experience with the conjugate method 30:15 - How's it been competing with Plantbuilt? 34:30 - Personalities of vegan lifters 40:30 - Why did Vinnie go vegan originally? 43:30 - Boca, Beyond and Gardein (mock meat) products, Grocery Outlet 45:45 - The band Earth Crisis and their vegan themes, setbacks in Vinnie's vegan journey originally, learning process 49:30 - Activism and being welcoming to new vegans or vegan curious 53:00 - Pointless animal based ingredients in otherwise vegan food 54:30 - difference in plant based foods and the vegan culture now vs back then 1:00:00 - Why is there a pullback in the growth of veganism lately? 1:04:00 - Impressionable youth and social media, PED use 1:08:30 - Hypermasculinity, veganism, wrestling 1:15:00 - Tough guys and big dudes who are super nice 1:17:00 - Nerds and getting jacked 1:21:30 - Vinnie's goals for the future 1:24:15 - The state of Philly, impoverished, drug use 01:27:00 - Where to find Vinnie on social media? 01:28:00 - Episode outro - COACHING: http://aethixfitness.com MERCH: http://www.aethixfitness.com/shop TRAINING PROGRAMS: http://www.aethixfitness.com/training TRUE NUTRITION - My absolute favorite, affordable, customizable vegan protein powder! In this continuation of our conversation with natural vegan bodybuilder Joe Vijay, we delve even deeper into the nuanced world of bodybuilding, veganism, and ethics. 🌱💪 This episode picks up where we left off, exploring Joe’s recent competitive season as a vegan bodybuilder and then diving into our opinions on enhanced bodybuilding and steroid use as a vegan. Could there one day be a Vegan Mr. Olympia? We examine the ethics and legality of steroids in the sport and the unique challenges Joe faces as a natural vegan athlete navigating this landscape. Joe shares his experiences of how people react to his vegan lifestyle, including some surprising responses to his vegan themed gym attire. We also touch on Joe’s personal approach to vegan activism, shedding light on different strategies for inspiring change. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn as we discuss societal health trends, the potential of lab-grown meat to accelerate veganism, and the reasons why more people haven’t embraced plant-based living. Joe also unpacks the health aspects of veganism, from bloodwork to maintaining peak fitness on a plant-based diet. 🌎 If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to prep for a bodybuilding competition as a vegan, Joe breaks it all down—manipulating food, cardio, and training to achieve peak conditioning. We discuss the role genetics and metabolism play in bodybuilding, the impact of extreme leanness on overall health, and how NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) changes during prep. Finally, we explore the importance of having a supportive partner during such an intense journey and how relationships can play a crucial role in achieving competitive goals. In this episode, I’m thrilled to welcome a guest who embodies the spirit of strength, resilience, and compassion: Bill Muir—or as many know him, Sgt. Vegan! Bill’s story is as inspiring as it is multifaceted: a vegan since 1992, a combat veteran, a registered nurse, and the author of Vegan Strong along with several other works. He’s a true testament to the power of living with purpose. In this episode, Bill takes us on a journey through his incredible life. As an RN specializing in cardiac telemetry, he reflects on how his experiences in the U.S. Army shaped his journey toward a career in nursing. We’ll also dive into his work as an author and hear about his other pursuits, including his time living in Japan, voice acting, and even contributing to the Final Fantasy X soundtrack. 🎵 And, of course, Bill will open up about his future goals and his advice for those looking to live a more purposeful, plant-based life. In this episode, I have the pleasure of being joined by my good friend and vegan coach/powerlifter, Billy Duffy. Billy and I met a couple years ago here in New York City and quickly became friends - wish usually seems to be the case when you have two extremely niche overlapping traits including being vegan, which already narrows down about 98.5% of the global population, and being obsessed with the science of resistance training. We actually competed in our first full power powerlifting meet about a year ago now along with our other two strong vegan friends, Julien DesRoches and Brennen Motz, and that was an absolute blast. But I digress… Billy absolutely loves powerlifting and trains hard as hell and he also loves sharing the knowledge of effective strength training. In this episode, we discuss all about Billy’s training history, what led him to powerlifting, when and why he went vegan, training for strength and hypertrophy for powerlifting, the moral aspects of veganism, plant based nutrition for serious gainz (with a “z”, of course), his experience with starting and running a small, vegan protein company with his wife, Emma, and much more. I’ve witnessed first hand just how passionate Billy is about his work as a personal trainer, and I think this episode really embodies that same passion with how he shares his knowledge on the subject. You can find Billy on instagram at @soy.boy.billy. In this episode, I’m joined by Boston-based, vegan natural bodybuilder and coach, Ben Mitchell. Ben is an example of someone who TRULY loves bodybuilding. He got his undergrad in Exercise and Movement science and self-admittedly spends a huge amount of his free time immersing himself in all things bodybuilding - nutrition research, training programming, and all other aspects involved and it shows when you talk to him! Ben just recently competed in his first bodybuilding show where he earned 2nd overall in a competitive class - a massive achievement for a first timer and someone of his training age, especially. I had the pleasure of visiting Boston during that time and documenting his journey into that show so if you haven’t already, I highly recommend going over to his YouTube channel at @BenAMitchell, and checking that video out. Since then, he’s competed in several other shows and has been coaching with the VeganProteins Coaching crew so if you’re looking for coaching, make sure to check that out too. Ben and I chat all about how he found bodybuilding and why he decided to pursue it competitively, his story behind going vegan, his last bodybuilding season and how he prepped on a fully plant based diet, why he decided to end it early and the repercussions of staying contest lean for an extended period of time, his favorite vegan bodybuilding meals and much more! In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Austin, AKA the Vegan Meathead. Daniel is a competitive, 75kg and 83kg powerlifter who holds multiple drug-tested, state records and competes along with the PlantBuilt team, the world's largest international all-vegan athletic team, as a member of their powerlifting subteam. Daniel has over a decade of experience competing in powerlifting as well as over 20 competitions to date. His best lifts in competition so far are a 469 lb squat, 315 bench press and 518 lb deadlift for a 1302 lb total in the 83kg class at a body weight of 175 lbs. One of Daniel’s driving factors behind his powerlifting endeavors is an expression of advocacy for a vegan lifestyle and to show others that it’s possible to perform at a high level on a fully plant based diet. Daniel is clearly fond of imparting his wisdom to others, as well - he previously authored his book “The Way of the Vegan Meathead” which covers all about nutrition and diet strategies for getting strong and jacked on a plant based diet. He recently also just dropped the audiobook version of his book, so make sure to go check that out on Audible and at his website veganmeathead.com . Daniel shares a ton of informative tidbits from the book and about his own personal journey from going from a skinny kid to getting strong completely on a plant based diet and I think you’ll find this episode chock full of super useful knowledge. 1 S2:E12 – TAA-S02Ep12 - DANI TAYLOR & GIACOMO MARCHESE on Competitive Vegan Athletes, Evolution of Plant Based Foods Through the Years, Activism Through Sport & More! 51:16
Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with the vegan fitness power couple themselves, Dani Taylor and Giacomo Marchese. Dani and Giacomo have been involved in the vegan fitness space for years now and originally met through the VeganBodybuilding.com message boards around 2008 during a meet-up event. They started their joint business Vegan Proteins shortly after which was an online storefront for all kinds of vegan protein brands. Over the years, they eventually converted it to a vegan fitness coaching team as the online storefront space became more competitive and have now also started Vegan Strong, which is a similar team consisting of athletes, nutritionists, authors and coaches with a goal of educating others at events about building a strong, healthy and impressive body on a plant based diet. They also started its subsidiary called Plantbuilt, which is a collective of high level, plant based strength and physique athletes who compete at events. Dani and Giacomo truly walk-the-walk also, and have both competed at high levels in both bodybuilding and other sports themselves. Dani and Giacomo get into the details of how they met, their reasons for going vegan, what drew them to fitness and competing, how plant based foods have evolved over the years, building muscle and strength on a plant based diet, and so much more. This was a really great episode with two amazing and influential people in the vegan fitness space and I think you’ll enjoy their stories and commentary just as much as I did! Dani can be found on Instagram at @veganproteins and Giacomo can be found at @musclesbybrussels . Check out their coaching website at veganproteins.com and their vegan health and fitness collectives at veganstrong.com and plantbuilt.com . They also have a podcast called Muscles by Brussels Radio which can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more. 1 S2:E11 – TAA-S02Ep11 - JOHN THOMAS aka THE BODYBUILDING VEGAN on Ethical Veganism & Bodybuilder, Why More Bodybuilders Should Go Vegan, Childhood Bullying, Subsidies & More! 57:43
In this episode, I’m joined by vegan competitive bodybuilder and coach, John Thomas, AKA the bodybuilding vegan on Instagram. John was nice enough to take the time to come on to the podcast just several weeks out from competition which, for any of you who have dieted super hard before know, is a brutal period that often consists of low energy and brain fog. That being said, I have to say that it wasn’t obvious with John at all, as he got into some absolutely amazing points in this chat and I was feeling fired up and motivated right after! We get into John’s history and what inspired him to go vegetarian and vegan at a young age, how bullying can affect children years down the road, what drew him to pursuing bodybuilding, his experiences with building muscle on a plant based diet and coaching other vegan lifters, why more high level bodybuilders should consider eating plant based, government subsidies for the animal agriculture industry, and a slew of other amazing content. John is currently aiming to become the first ever vegan IFBB pro in the men’s open bodybuilding category and pave the way for a future of vegan competitors. He can be found on instagram at @TheBodybuildingVegan and for his coaching and more content, check out thebodybuildingvegan.com . In this episode, I’m joined by the one and only Dr. Eric Trexler. Eric has a PHD in Human Movement Science, earned his pro card as a natural bodybuilder, has been a coach since 2009, and is currently a metabolism researcher at Duke University in North Carolina. Eric is also co-owner of the MASS research review, which if you didn’t know, is a monthly newsletter that breaks down the most recent nutrition and exercise related research into easy to digest content. Eric has also published dozens of his own peer-reviewed research papers on exercise and sports nutrition related strategies and is at the forefront of the evidence based fitness community. I’ve personally been a follower of Eric’s content for years - probably since around 2015 - and have the utmost respect for the unbiased, high quality information he puts out which is why I was excited to find out Eric went vegan for ethical purposes in 2020 during his studies into Buddhism and spirituality. and I delve into why exactly he chose to follow a vegan lifestyle, how his experience has been so far both personally and within the fitness industry, the research on plant vs. animal protein, the health benefits of a plant based diet and general healthy diet practices, dietary nitrates, supplementation and so much more. We packed a lot of great content into this episode and I’m excited to share with you all. Eric can be found on Instagram at Trexler Fitness and at trexlerfitness.com and I definitely recommend checking out MASS and massresearchreview.com . 1 S2:E9 – TAA S02Ep09 - MAXIME SIGOUIN on Overcoming Struggles with Fitness, Business Mentors, Coaching & More 50:44
In this episode, I’m joined by plant based body recomposition coach Maxime Sigouin who runs the fit vegan coaching program. Maxime has a very interesting life story about what led him to pursue fitness coaching and a plant based diet. As he shares in this episode, he’s experienced a lot in his life so far including caring for his partner who was going through cancer treatments, training seriously for cycling and ironman and using that as a form of fundraising for cancer patients, working as a high fashion model, pursuing natural bodybuilding, working with a mentor who is quite famous in the YouTube fitness industry and eventually starting his own business endeavors to help others get in their best shape on a plant based diet. I particularly found his story about why he adopted a plant based to be very interesting and contrarian to why most people initially do. All of Maxime’s social media accounts and services can be found on his fitness coaching website at fitvegan.ca if you’re interested in connecting and thanks again to Maxime for coming on and being so transparent with everything! So this episode is going to be a bit of departure from what we’ve done before on the podcast but I think it’s a lot of fun. Eddie Baumgartner, a vegan powerlifter who was on the podcast in season 1, joins me again for this one but instead of the normal interview style that we’ve done before - we actually did a version of the hot ones challenge for this one. For those who aren’t familiar, the hot ones challenge is a challenge where celebrities are asked 10 questions and they eat a buffalo wing that gets increasingly hotter for each question - as the questions also get more heated. Eddie and I, two of your favorite celebrities, of course, did our vegan take on this. We both had a plate of five Gardein Ultimate tenders, which - side note - if you haven’t had yet, are absolutely delicious, and we picked 5 hot sauces that increase in scoville rating from 1,700 to apparently, possibly over 2.5 MILLION, although not OFFICIALLY confirmed. Needless to say, Eddie and I were goin’ through it here. After coating each tender in sauce, we went back and forth and asked each other an increasingly more complex question following the theme of controversial vegan opinions. So in our flustered, adrenaline fueled state post-bite, we’d have to answer our opinion on a controversial vegan topic which I think you guys will find very entertaining. To make things worse, we also didn’t allow ourselves any water, almond milk, or WHATEVER during the whole length of the challenge. This is one that I recommend watching in video form but if not, the audio recording alone is pretty damn entertaining, I’d say. You can find Eddie at @eddie.baumgartner on Instagram and YouTube and @theagentbaum on Twitch. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy our oncoming ridiculousness and suffering! - COACHING: http://aethixfitness.com MERCH: http://www.aethixfitness.com/shop TRAINING PROGRAMS: http://www.aethixfitness.com/training TRUE NUTRITION - My absolute favorite, affordable, customizable vegan protein powder! In this episode, I’m joined by none other than Robert Cheeke, the godfather of vegan bodybuilding, activist, motivational speaker, founder of veganbodybuilding.com , and best selling author. Robert was the first person I personally ever heard of competing in bodybuilding as a natural athlete on a completely plant based diet and he has done SO much over the years to promote veganism and eating a healthy, sustainable plant based diet. Robert won the title of INBA Northwestern USA Natural Bodybuilding Overall Novice Champion in 2005, placed competitively in the 2006 Natural Bodybuilding World Championships and won his class in the 2009 Northwestern USA Natural Bodybuilding Championships. Robert has written several books including the New York Times Best Seller “The Plant Based Athlete” published in 2021, “Plant Based Muscle” in 2017, “Shred It” in 2014, and “Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness” in 2010. During our chat, Robert walks us through his early life and reasons for going vegan, how he bulked up over 100 lbs on a plant based diet, the reasons people should want to go vegan, tips on getting the most out of your plant based diet as an athlete, his favorite meals and restaurants and TONS more. Robert is very knowledgeable, experienced and well-spoken which makes him an exceptional advocate for veganism and a big inspiration for me personally when I first decided to go vegan in early 2016 and to this day. Minil has been vegan for over six years, has been lifting seriously for well over ten years, and is a strong believer in keeping the mind and body healthy through nutrition, fitness and science. We get into all the details about how and why Minil went vegan, his lifestyle and diet before and after, what drew him to the medical field, and his experiences in medical school and as a doctor. We also get into the knitty gritty details on plant based protein sources and how they compare to animal based proteins, meat and masculinity and why men are less likely to go vegan than women, excelling in athletics on a plant based diet, pressure on vegans to be good examples and so much more. Minil is extremely knowledgeable and I particularly loved hearing about his evidence based approach to plant based nutrition, his recommendations and how he applies it to his own life. In this episode, Jen Morgan joins me to talk all about her experiences as a competitive, vegan, strongwoman athlete in the masters’ 132 and 148 pound weight classes. Strongman is a competition that includes a variety of events where the goal is to demonstrate the highest feat of strength possible on that particular movement to beat out other competitors in the weight class. You may have heard of the World’s Strongest Man or World’s Strongest Woman, which is one of the most renowned competitions in the strongman universe and includes such athletes as Donna Moore, Andrea Thompson, Olga Liaschuk, Eddie Hall, Brian Shaw and Halfthor Bjornnsen, otherwise known by his role as the Mountain in the popular Game of Thrones series. Although the specific events in strongman competitions always change a bit, some staples that frequently appear include some variety of deadlifts, squats, lifting stones, log or axle press, farmer’s carries or yoke walks, vehicle pulls, keg toss and tire flips, for example. Jen walks me through the basics of what entails these competitions, how she trains for them, what got her into them, the strongman community in general, her reasons for going vegan, her experiences training for strongman and powerlifting as a vegan athlete and much more. Jen is insanely, mind-blowingly strong and it was super interesting hearing all about these things during out conversation. Jen can be found on social media at @ jacked_jenny . I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed our chat and thanks so much again to Jenny for coming on! 1 S2:E3 – The Aethix Approach - S2 Ep3 - All About Bulking on a Plant Based Diet with JULIEN DESROCHES 59:42
In this episode, Julien DesRoches joins me to talk all about bulking on a plant based diet. For anyone who isn't familiar with the term, bulking is the name for intentionally overeating to gain more weight and should be combined with a properly planned resistance training program. The goal with bulking is to put the body in a more anabolically-primed state to pack on more muscle quicker than the individual otherwise would while eating less. Under the vast majority of circumstances, bulking comes with some inherent fat gain alond with the muscle gain, so the goal is minimize the amount of fat cell accumulation. After reaching a target bodyweight or strength goals, a bulking or mass gain phase is usually followed by a cutting phase where the goal is to strip body fat back down while attempting to hold on to as much of that newly gained muscle tissue as possible. Julien is currently in a bulking phase and has been noticing some impressive progress, even after more than eight years of training. Julien and I get into the knitty gritty of bulking up on a plant based diet - who should do it, why they should do it, and tips for planning a successful mass gain focused training cycle. We also get into training as a natural after many years, body dysmorphia, our favorite sources of plant based protein, favorite meals for a bulk, specific tips and tricks we picked up over the years to pack on weight, and much more. I hope you enjoy the episode and you can find Julien at @plantsformed on Instagram or on our joint tiktok at BeeflessBros. Without further ado, on with the show! In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Zachary Belknap, a natural WNBF pro vegan bodybuilder and NASM certified personal trainer. Zack placed first in his pro-debut bodybuilding show and despite it not being his direct pursui, also has some impressive strength numbers under his belt with a 495 lb squat, 345 lb bench press and 520 lb deadlift. Zack went vegan in 2015 mainly for environmental purposes but he quickly found himself drawn to the moral aspects above all else. Switching to a vegan lifestyle was a big motivator for him to push his bodybuilding pursuits to the next level. The myth of plant based diets being inadequate for building muscle is still a pervasive theory in the general population, and Zack uses that to drive his ambitions in the sport. Zack is an extremely impressive natural bodybuilder, reaching up to a massive 220 lbs in his off-season at 5’10”, and one of the best examples of what can be achieved without PED’s on a plant based diet. His fellow competitors are almost always in shock to hear about his diet after seeing what he has achieved which is great activism in itself. Zack can be found on Instagram at @boldbodyfitnessllc which is also the name of his personal training business and you can find info on that there. Thanks again to Zack for taking the time to come on the podcast and I hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed our chat! In today’s episode, I speak with Leah DeCesare, a 47kg or 103lb weight class powerlifter who’s competed at the Arnold and in several national powerlifting meets with great success. Leah’s been vegan for well over 15 years and built all of her incredible strength and muscle on a fully plant based diet. In competition, Leah’s hit a 275.5 lb squat, a 176.3 lb bench press and a 308.6 lb deadlift at only 103 lbs bodyweight, giving her a DOTS score of 448.28. Leah has always had an interesting approach to nutrition for an elite powerlifter of her status. She’s always leaned towards a more lax, intuitive approach towards nutrition and has never really been much for tracking calories or macros. This was a topic I found to be very interesting to discuss with her about and I think highlights the importance of diet sustainability as well as other factors that may be more influential for strength and muscle accrual. We also got into the details of Leah’s training history, what has worked well for her to skyrocket her numbers, her reasons for going vegan, and much more. Episode Notes In this episode, I speak with Tom Simak, a plant based endurance athlete and content creator from Queensland, Australia. Actually, this episode with Tom was originally recorded at the end of July, 2021, but life got pretty crazy for me shortly after so I’m only releasing the full episode now in October, 2021. My apologies to Tom and you listeners out there for the huge delay! Back to the overview - Tom has completed some crazy endurance feats including the Goggin’s 4x4x48 challenge which consists of running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 total hours. Yes, you read that right and it’s exactly as crazy as it sounds. 48 total miles in 48 hours allowing basically no time for any decent sleep. Tom and I discuss the physical and mental stress such an extreme challenge had on his body as well as his other athletic feats, what he eats as a plant based athlete, the state of the environment and climate change and how we can contribute to bettering the world. Tom also hosts an awesome podcast called The Plant Paradigm so I highly recommend checking that out if you haven’t already https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-plant-paradigm/id1454137799 On a side note - this episode will be concluding season one of the Aethix Approach podcast but I’ll be back in Spring of 2022 with a ton of fresh content for your listening pleasure. In this episode, vegan bodybuilder Lance James and I chat about what drew him to competitive bodybuilding, how his training programming and philosophies have developed over the years, body dysmorphia in bodybuilding and how his plant based diet has affected his results in the gym. We also discuss our reasons for being vegan and our personal forms of activism as well as issues with the online vegan community and how veganism is sometimes portrayed on social media. In this episode, I speak with Mateo Way, a vegan powerlifter and bodybuilder, about what led him to lifting and veganism, differences between bodybuilding and powerlifting training, effective diet and nutrition strategies, individual genetic differences, vegan stereotypes and much, much more. In this episode, I speak with Adrian Lozano, a California based vegan life coach and yogi, who helps others transform their life through mindfulness practices. Adrian himself has struggled with anxiety and depression in the past which caused him to seek his own journey of self improvement. Through exercise, yoga, diet, meditation, positive thinking and therapy, Adrian was able to completely transform himself over time into the happy and positive person he is today. Adrian continues his pursuit of personal growth and development and has a passion for helping others undergo the same transformation that he himself has, and continues, to undergo. Adrian is a very upbeat, kind, open minded person and I learned a lot from our conversation. It was a pleasure speaking with him and I hope you enjoy the chat!
