Author Maggie Walters is blessed to live in a magical part of Australia called the Northern Rivers of NSW and spends her time developing her writing skills and raising three beautiful children (who are almost grown young adults now).
SPLIT: a life shared, living with Multiple Personality Disorder is her first full manuscript, and was launched in May 2024. In it, Maggie tells the story of living and surviving a complicated life as she navigates the triggers, twists and turns of living with Multiple Personality Disorder (also known as Disassociative Identity Disorder).
Keeping her busy right now is her second manuscript which details the process of adopting her three kids, and challenges the notion of generational motherhood and trauma, and breaking those cycles.
In this episode, we speak about:
- Maggie’s experience of trauma as a child, where the only escape she could find was to retreat into my mind
- the adaption mechanism that Maggie’s brain created as a result, to split into “alters” of different personalities
- how these alters experienced the abuse and kept Maggie safe and well in the background
- the process of becoming aware of alters, how the alters work in a system, and how Maggie’s therapists identified her trauma response
- stigma, misconceptions and dinosaur, old-school “something wrong with you” view of mental differences and disorders
- and sharing her trauma experiences and living with MPD with her older children, who now have the capacity to understand her experience better
Our conversation ends with Maggie’s definition of hope - not the Hallmark kind but the hope of finding and making meaning of what has happened in her life.
Please share this conversation with others - Maggie’s story and her willingness to let us inside of a life lived with disorder that has historically been misunderstood or mashed into a Hollywood-style stereotype is deeply needed in the world.
