Kamehameha the Great was the monarch of Hawaii from 1782 to 1819 and he is known for establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii. Therefore this day, his birthday, is a state holiday in Hawaii and includes horse, cycle, and footraces, as well as a hula competition. It’s almost as big of a deal over there as SPAM.
