Last night Sinn Fein's council motion on the future of Belfast Zoo was referred to the a council sub-committee for consideration. Currently the council subsidises the zoo at a cost of £2.5m each year and Sinn Fein councillor Conor Maskey has called for the site to be transformed into a "world class visitor attraction" which would not include what he describes as the 'wrong' and 'unethical' practice of displaying caged animals. What should be the future of the zoo? Stephen spoke to Sinn Fein councillor Conor Maskey, Alliance Party councillor Nuala McAllister, travel writer and commentator Tim Hedgley and animal rights campaigner Daniel Barclay.…
Over the weekend Stephen heard from the boss of a prominent animal rights group who said we should stop calling our pets - 'pets'. Ingrid Newkirk who runs PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) says the term 'pet' is derogatory because it makes living things sound like a 'commodity' or 'decoration'... They aren't, she says. "something which allows you to go out for a walk'. They say it's all to do with something called speciesism. I spoke to freelance journalist and broadcaster Angela Epstein and Dr Corey Wrenn a lecturer in sociology at the University of Kent.…

The only trusts not to charge their employees - were the Northern and Western. Should parking in our hospitals - be free? 1 Sinn Féin call on church leaders & civic society to put pressure on the British government for more cash for Stormont 23:04
Sinn Fein have called for support from church leaders and civic society in asking the British Government for more money But the question is - why are they asking for money after they signed up to the Stormont deal last month? Is it a sensible call? Or does it smack of desperation? And who is going to listen to them now that the Executive is up and running? What do you make of that? And perhaps more importantly - what would the English taxpayer make of that? Stephen spoke with Commentator Andre Walker, Ben Lowry of the Newsleter and NI Labour member Phil Kelly.…
