156. Grief Often Looks Different than You Expect
Manage episode 377197538 series 2882323
We don’t just grieve with death and tragedy.
We grieve loss, change, our childhoods, unmet expectations, and unfulfilled hopes and dreams for relationships.
We grieve lives that didn’t turn out how we thought they would or wanted them to.
We often grieve during transitions.
We grieve for our past selves.
Grief is complicated and frustrating, especially when we don’t recognize our feelings as grief.
Noticing helps. Accepting and allowing, perhaps even embracing grief as part of the process of becoming the next version of you helps.
Anticipating grief also helps.
We think we shouldn’t grieve and that it is better to move through grief faster and get to “the other side.”
Grieving itself is the path forward.
Dropping into your body’s sensations can help you move through the discomfort of grief.
Our bodies tell us what we need if we slow down enough to listen.
Deep breaths, mindful yoga, walks, and reaching out to a friend often help.
If you find yourself spiraling and going into a zone of overwhelm getting help helps.
Friends, family, mental healthcare, and coaching may all be helpful.
