In this episode of Permission To Be Enchanting, Clare and Rachel are joined by Dr. Liz who is sharing her knowledge all about self-compassion.

Dr. Liz Maloney guides us through understanding the biggest challenges of self-criticism, shame, and perfectionism. She teaches us that through our thoughts, in the way we react to our emotions, and by our actions, we can become more loving, more compassionate people; first for ourselves and then for everyone else.

Self-compassion includes treating ourselves with compassion when things are difficult and deeply appreciating the good in ourselves. Contrary to what some may think, self-compassion also leads to greater compassion for others.

Dr. Liz talks about “Compare Despair” when Rachel shares a feeling of competition that she grew up with, pitting herself against her friends and always feeling like there was someone who was better at everything than she was.

Our wellbeing doesn’t come from being perfect or the best, our wellbeing comes from just being our authentic self and living according to our values.

The more you own who you are, the happier you will feel. Because you are irreplaceable.

The great news is that self-compassion involves skills that we can practice. In our thoughts, how we handle our emotions, and our actions.

Research shows that the three biggest drivers of unhappiness are self-criticism, shame, and perfectionism.

We can create new neural pathways by repeating to ourselves loving and kind phrases. And the amazing thing is that we don’t even need to believe those phrases at first! Clare shared a wonderful thought that she practices with her coaching clients – “I deserve love”.

In order to overcome perfectionism, Dr. Liz has learned to say “Done is better than perfect” which Clare and Rachel definitely understand as they start out this podcast journey! And doing things imperfectly gives silent permission to others to just go for it and try, even if it’s not completely right yet.
