The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish

When Katharine Graham took over the Washington Post in 1963, she was a shy socialite who'd never run anything. By retirement, she'd taken down a president, ended the most violent strike in a generation, and built one of the best-performing companies in American history. Graham had no training, no experience, not even confidence. Just a newspaper bleeding money and a government that expected her to fall in line. When her editors brought her stolen classified documents, her lawyers begged her not to publish. They said it would destroy the company. She published them anyway. Nixon came after her, attacking her with the full force of the executive. Then Watergate. For nearly a year she was ridiculed and isolated while pursuing the story that would eventually bring down the president. Graham proved that you can grow into a job that initially seems impossible and no amount of training can substitute for having the right values and the courage to act on them. "There is a value doing work where you are able to support one person or are able to shift the landscape in the tiniest way and move a millimetre in the right direction. You have to believe wholeheartedly in what you are doing or you will lose your mind." Stephanie Case is a human rights lawyer and women's rights advocate with expertise in conflict settings and humanitarian emergencies. Starting her career as a corporate lawyer in NYC, the Global Financial Crises offered her an opportunity to take a year off. Steph has won or placed in a number of international running events, ranging from 250 km multi-day desert races to 200-mile non-stop mountain races. "To pretend that we didn't know people were burning out, becoming dysfunctional and most likely that was collectively happening across the Command - was at the best naive and at the worst it was intentional neglect." Mark is a registered Psychologist and over the past 20 years has worked in some of the strangest, harshest and least 'clinical' environments on the globe. This includes working as a former SAS regimental psychologist who deployed to Afghanistan six times and now founder of 'Psyched Up' - an industry psychology leader supporting individuals, organisations and communities in extreme environments. This conversation is an inside look into the minds of combat soldiers. Mark discusses how war can fundamentally change a human. Moreso how repeated combat can impact one's moral fabric and lead to a challenging transition when a veteran returns home from deployment. Not exclusively we discuss: •the value of listening to our returning warriors •the consequence of a lack of purpose and clear strategy •The stigma of mental health in the military •Moral injury & the impact of heavy deployment •Rights of passages across the military and reality TV world. Other areas of Mark's work include: •Debriefing wintering expeditioners for the Australian Antarctic program. •Designing and implemented local recruitment and induction programs in Papua New Guinea for oil companied. •Establishing culture change programs. •Assessing and recruited indigenous youth into mining jobs in North Western Australia. •Managed cast and crew of reality TV shows (where we first met!) For episode 30, I have interviewed a man I consider to be the best TRANSFORMER I know. Someone who has gone from the being a Troop Commander with the SAS, a graduate of the Wharton School of Business, Consultant at McKinsey & Company, starting his own tough luxury fashion label 'Kill Kapture', compelling and in demand Keynote Presenter and Author. He also happens to be my husband and we recorded this podcast after spending over 100 days in stage 4 lock down in Victoria and on the final day of a 2 week quarantine in Perth. So that is a lot of intense time in each other's company. I am not going to lie, we are both worn - physically and mentally from this year. We also have discovered so much about each other and our conversations have deepened through this period of uncertainty. Mark grew up in the red dirt of West Australian mining towns in the Pilbara. After deciding he wanted to join the SAS in high school, he embarked on a career in the Australian military that would eventually lead him to the battlefields of Afghanistan. As a Troop Commander in charge of 30 elite soldiers, Mark's role was to lead combat missions against senior enemy commanders, deep behind enemy lines. Through this unique and harsh environment, Mark developed his skills in leadership, teamwork and high performance. Undoubtedly he encountered high stress situations where personal and team performance means the difference between life and death. Transitioning out of the military he went back to the bottom of the totem pole as a student at the Wharton School of Business. Both a fish out of water and well out of his depth, his humility and capacity for growth grew rapidly in this environment. This conversation discusses: •His early wanderings as a quiet dreamer and laser focused on joining the military. •Early deployments to East Timor & the Solomon Islands. •The tragedy of losing his Mum at 23 years old. •Realising that time might not be plentiful or on your side, so you need to put aside your fear & ego to pursue what you want. •Training for selection & transforming himself •What SAS selection was really like: 'mission & team' •Shared values creates trust •The pitfalls of mission creep without a clear strategy •Afghanistan - 4 back to back deployments •Coping with trauma. •Realising he had PTSD and his ongoing road to recovery •The humiliation and humility of being the rookie again. Warning: in the final 10 minutes there is a sensitive discussion around a historical sex abuse incident. "You can increase your chances from remote to good by the accumulation of tiny incremental efforts over the years and focusing on what you can control." "The minute you get to the top of your game the clock is ticking for your obsolescence." You can discover more about Mark via his website (markwales.com.au) and instagram (@mark.a.wales).…

""Are you on auto pilot or are you choosing the path you are on?" This week on the podcast I am interviewing one of my nearest and dearest Sarah Davidson (formerly Sarah Holloway). A lady who I certainly consider to be in my inner tribe, quite literally the smartest person I know, fellow lover of verbose responses, 'lawyer turned funtrepreneur' (podcast host + author + entrepreneur) and the Queen of Quotes. This conversation is a reflection of our 12 year relationship, that includes both our willingness to ask the challenging conversations and our spark of joy when we are with each other. We met as eager beaver law students 12 years ago and our paths lined up as corporate lawyers in top tier law firms... before I abandoned the coup to run & speak.... One year later Sarah & her now husband Nic Davidson started Matcha Maiden - an organic matcha green tea company. The brand sky rocketed through the use of social media and Sarah's amazing ability and connection. Within 6 months it gained the attention of US retailed Urban Outfitters - which was the trigger for Sarah to leave her job in law to jumped head and feet first into the business. She is the co-founder of Matcha Mylkbar - a vegan inspired cafe The host of globally renowned podcast Seize the Yay And most recently an author to Seize the Yay. This conversation discusses (amongst many things): •How Sarah revamped her metric of 'success' •How she's reignited the inner child. •Her strengths and weaknesses, including anything confrontational!! •Creating a brand as a reflection of the most authentic representation of her •The learnings from writing her book, including the uncovering of why she's struggled to self manage and say NO to opportunities •Learning how to create milestones and celebrate the small successes •Her mantras of 'Dreaming Big but Planning Small', 'Done is better than perfect' •How to change your default settings Sarah is a huge lover of life, all things yay, flexible thinking, spontaneity and she is a GEM. Coree comes onto the podcast and chats all things Eco Challenge, The World's Toughest Race Fiji. Specifically what it was like to be part of Team Onyx, whose mission in the race went beyond the race experience itself. The team was participating with a purpose to represent the African American, as well as the LGBT community. The team comprised of record-holding ultramarathoner, Coree Aussem-Woltering, skilled ultra-endurance mountain biker Samantha Scipio, former Navy SEAL and Crossfit gym owner Chriss Smith Jr and former Div.1 NCAA football player and filmmaker Mikayla Lyles. Leading this team of trailblazers was seasoned adventure racer and former Marine Clifton Lyles. We discuss how the team formed, how they prepared for the challenge, what was their team strategy - considering they only met one before the race, and how was their experience. It truly is a masterclass in leadership and teams. Fast forward to 2020, Coree, has had his entire race season cancelled and decided to channel his fitness and passion into a fastest known time attempt on the Ice Age Trail. It is a historic footpath which runs through the state of Wisconsin, US. It took him 21 days, 13 hours, 35 minutes to run the 1,147 miles -- smashing the previous record by some five hours. It wasn't smooth sailing and Coree talks about the challenges and the fundamentals of focusing on 10 seconds at a time as a way to endure the hardship. At the same time he has raised over $50,000 to support small businesses in his community & those negatively affected by Covid-19 Coree is as much known for his Speedos and positive attitude as he is for his stand-out running ability. His coach once told Trail Runner Magazine he's never heard Coree make an excuse, and if he could bottle up Coree's work ethic and perseverance and sell it, he'd be a billionaire. Coree began his running career with the 400m and 800m distances, which he ran from middle school through college. He was en route to becoming a professional triathlete, when he discovered ultrarunning. Coree and his husband, a professional skydiver, live in Ottowa, Illinois (#CornfieldCowboys). James Lawrence, or better know as the Iron Cowboy is a world record holder for multiple feats in the sport of triathlon and is a sought-after inspirational speaker. In 2015, he set a new record by doing 50 Ironman triathlons in 50 consecutive days, in all 50 states. It was featured in a documentary called Redefine Impossible and this conversation bares all - about the challenges, the highs and lows. Last September, James and I both competed in Eco Challenge, the Worlds Toughest Race in Fiji. We both loved the experience!!! The series has just aired on Amazon Prime as a 10 part series, hosted by Bear Grylls. Despite all of James' badass past experience he was a novice adventure racer - so it was awesome to hear his perspective on the experience. To explore the notion of grittiness as a commonality for those who finished the race. What he learned about himself and other from his experience. Also the difference between the 50-50-50 versus Eco Challenge. We also discussed: •how he is pivoting during covid -19. •how you manage the thoughts in your head, the inner bully & critic. •A full breakdown on 50-50-50, including a focus on SuperMom Sunny. •common mistakes that athletes make - rushing endurance and speed. •science of performance in endurance & why you shouldn't skip the steps in between. •how to create adventures.... where to focus...where to start. •demystifying sponsorship - go local; be willing to fund your own adventures. •what does it mean to do the work. •how to find out my passion. •appreciating the moment and how to be in it. •the challenge of being on stage as an introvert. •What's next!! Hope you loved this conversation - you can check out James at website: https://www.ironcowboy.com/ (virtual events, coaching, programs) socials: @ironcowboyjames…

Dean Leslie is a South African filmmaker who is the founder of Wandering Fever, a company born out of a love for the wild and the ability to tell stories through film. Dean is responsible for most of Salomon TV's summer films and has been for the last seven years. He has played a pivotal role in how trail and ultra running is documented around the world. Dean's work has taken him to every continent, chasing down the world's foremost endurance athletes and documenting the ways in which we interact with some of the world's most stunning landscapes. Over the past decade he has spent most of his time on the road, a topic we discuss extensively. With Dean's belief that 'passion & balance are mutually incompatible'. We discuss the other spheres of his life which were neglected during his filmmaking career, and how he now has a consciousness in what it takes to pursue a passion. What I admire about Dean's work is that it explores the human struggle in endurance (both the professional and personal ones) with compassion not drama. His films show a curiosity and engagement with locals and the nature, without blindly exoticizing foreign places and peoples. This conversation explores the trajectory of Deans career (from animation to photography to film) and his belief that if you say YES to something you need to be 100% in, regardless of the financial reward. We also discuss: •the filmmakers voice in a story •His relationship with childhood friend Ryan Sandes •The relationship and trust he fosters with his subjects •Early challenge in making running look 'cool', yet its similarity to surfing with expansive landscapes and the solitude figure •Meeting fascinating people from Scott Jurek, Tony Krupicka, Caballo Blanco •The early grind of reporting and documenting races •The importance of looking for niche pockets - where he moved away from documenting races/competition to focus on the human story •His relationship and autonomy with Salomon TV •The difference between a documentary and an advert.... the truth! •The stress and depression that emerged through the Great Himalayan Project, and how he got out of it •The cathartic process of editing. •Life as a Dad This is a ripper, you can find Dean http://wanderingfever.com/ socials @thewanderingfever Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/wanderingfever…

The roles have been reversed and podcast favourite Lucy Bartholomew is interviewing ME for the 20th episode. Despite some reluctance on my end, Lucy convinced me that it is nice for you (the listener) to know more about the person interviewing all of these epic guests! Despite being interviewed on many other podcasts over the years, this surprisingly felt exposing - which is a healthy reminder for me in my role as host! Neither Lucy or I held back in what we shared. So here it is, and our regular conversations will continue in the next episode!!! We discuss: •the journey from awkward kid who avoided sport into someone who creates expedition and adventure races around the world. •our mutual admiration for Rich Roll •getting caught in the conveyer belt of perceived success •the power of storytelling across platforms •the process of allowing ideas to grow - from the initial idea, who you should share them with & the analytical phase. •how to be of value in collaborative teams •how the relief run came to life and raised over $1million in 12 days •imposter syndrome - when/where I've felt it & how I know navigate through it •taking ownership over how we communicate about ourselves •who I would want to sit at a dinner table with A brief snapshot into me: After a decade of study, I became a lawyer working for the largest international law firm in the world - Baker & McKenzie. I traded in my heels & mini tailored suit (which we discuss in the episode) for running shoes and I have spent the following decade using running, adventure and storytelling as a vehicle for social impact. Specifically, in the space of access to education; women's empowerment and supporting First Nations communities and organisations. I was the first woman to complete the 4 Deserts Grand Slam; traversed 3500kms across India on foot and completed the World's Toughest Race. I am a proud Goodwill Ambassador for World Vision Australia, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and a corporate presenter. Last December I married Mark Wales, who I met on the set of Survivor. Together we have a wild two-year-old called Harry. I have raised $1.5 million dollars for charities such as World Vision, Save the Children and the Australian Red Cross, with the talent and time of some epic people.
