Meet Duncan Welgemoed, a South African-born, French-trained chef who has taken Adelaide by storm with his vibrant and fearless cooking style at Africola. Growing up in Johannesburg during the violent apartheid era, Duncan’s childhood was shaped by hardship and resilience, experiences that fuel his culinary creativity today. After moving to the UK as a teenager, he cut his teeth in Michelin-starred kitchens like Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons and Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck. But it was in Australia that Duncan found his true culinary voice.
Africola, his flagship restaurant, is an expression of his African heritage – fiery, bold, and unapologetic. Specializing in African-inspired dishes, Duncan balances sour, hot, salty, and sweet flavors to create a powerful sensory experience. His hands-on approach and keen eye for detail ensure that every dish reflects his distinctive flair.
