And during the roundup, these snakes are kept in a pit and then, one by one, beheaded and skinned in front of in front of audiences." - Elizabeth MeLampy Elizabeth MeLampy is a lawyer dedicated to animal rights and protection, and her passion for this work shines through in her latest book, Forget the Camel, the Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human . To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. There are more than 2-thousand youth enrolled in New York State PROMISE, which is a research project. Half of the students and their families are enrolled in an intervention group and receive a coordinated set of services and supports aimed at promoting a successful transition to adulthood. The other half are in a control group. While students in the control group don't receive the same enhanced supports, their participation is critical to gathering accurate data to help bring about future systems change for students with disabilities who receive Supplemental Security Income or SSI.

Over the past five years about 2000 students have been enrolled in New York State PROMISE, which is a research study designed to help determine the most effective ways to help youth successfully transition to adulthood. Half of the youth have been in a control group and the other half are in an intervention group that received a targeted set of core services. On September 30 of this year, New York State PROMISE staff will no longer follow-up with families in the control group, although national evaluators will. These families will also continue to have access to all of the services and supports that New York State has to offer outside of PROMISE. The PROMISE team wants to thank the control group for its participation.…

It has been more than a year since 17 year-old Zanaya was hired at Do the Twist pretzel shop at Green Acres Mall in Queens. New York State PROMISE played an intricate part in Zanaya's success, including helping her scout out the job, preparing her for the interview and working on her people-skills. PROMISE families in Niagara Falls are making sure they are accessing all of the services they're eligible for, thanks to the hard of the Western New York PROMISE team.Niagara Falls case manager and parent coordinator Mia Crumpton has successfully referred 100% of her families to benefits counselors and either neighborhood legal services or Western New York Independent Living, Incorporated. Numerous families have greatly benefitted from the advice that they have received from benefits review meetings with those agencies.…
