On November 19, 2008, Global CDH invited Charles J.H. Stolar, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief and Director of Pediatric Surgery at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and the Rudolph N. Schullinger in New York City, to discuss pre-term diagnosis and surgical procedures of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Dr. Stolar is one out of 400 pediatric specialists focused on fetus and newborn surgery within the United States. His impressive background and extensive knowledge on medicine has elevated him as one of the most important leadership figures in the hospital. His passion and desire is reflected through his motivation to save life’s within the childrens’ section of the hospital--also known as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
It is common that in the adult surgeons parameter that survival rates are focused on a five-year term. However, Dr. Stolar’s specialty has extended this outlook towards a 100-year cure and he is in the business of saving whole lives. His efforts as a faculty member of the hospital has impacted the congenital diaphragmatic hernia survival rate dramatically.
Through his expertise on this unique birth defect, CDH has gone from “almost 100% mortality rate to almost all living.” His endorsement for our Global CDH initiative reflects our essential need to be well established as a nonprofit organization. As the survival rate increases new issues are being exposed and parents will require assistance with what lies ahead for the surviving child
