Studio: Brains Base | Director: Shigeyuki Miya (Blood Lad, Buzzer Beater) |
Source Material: Manga | Website: Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou |
Notable Seiyuu: Kana Hanazawa, Sanae Kobayashi, Rina Satou |
Things to Note: Generic male student moves into a dorm and has a pervert for a roommate? Not much going for this considering it’s from the same team as Blood Lad. |

A portion of humanity managed to escape using enormous “seed ships” like the Sidonia, which have allowed them to maintain the population while drifting through space. Nagate Tanikaze is a young man who has been raised deep in the bowels of the ship. When he goes into training to pilot the huge robotic weapons known as Gardes, Nagate is entrusted with piloting the legendary unit known as Tsugumori. Nagate and his fellow pilots put their lives on the line against the Gauna, in the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity! |
Studio: Starchild Records, Polygon Pictures | Director: Koubun Shizuno (Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls) |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://starchild.fm/anime/knightsofsidonia/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Aki Toyosaki, Ryota Ohsaka, Satomi Arai, Eri Kitamura |
Things to Note: Director is relatively new, but has an experienced set of seiyuu. Show is done in full CG. Also being streamed by Netflix, so hopefully that will help it permeate the Western markets. I read through was was scanlated to this point, and it looks pretty good. A good mix of giant robots, space sci-fi, and romantic drama without being too harem-esque. Definitely work giving a try. |

Majin Bone
Description: Anime adaptation of Majin Bone, a digital card game project. |
Studio: Toei Animation | Director: Konosuke Uda |
Source Material: Card Game | Website: http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/majinbone/ |

Even So, The World is Beautiful
Description: Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, Nike, the fourth princess of the Rain Dukedom and one who holds the power to call forth the rain, travels to the Sun Kingdom to marry Sun King Livius for her country, despite her own reluctance. She soon discovers that the King, who conquered the world in only three years after his ascendance to the throne, is still a child! Furthermore, for trivial reasons, he has demanded that Nike call forth the rain…?! |
Studio: Studio Pierrot | Director: Hajime Kemgaki (Air Gear, Hanasakeru Seishounen) |
Source Material: Shōjo manga | Website: http://www.ntv.co.jp/soreseka/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Nobunaga Shimazaki, Ai Kayano |
Things to Note: I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of shōjo manga, so I’m not the best judge of things. The preview has that misty look that goes with any corny romance story. And, I’m not really into the whole “Stockholm Syndrome that turns into love” plot. Take it for what it is, but the only romance story I’ve liked in a long time was White Albumn 2, and Golden Time got terrible half way through. |

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
Description: A continuation of the previous series. In a Japanese jail sits 17-year-old Jotaro Kujo: punk, fighter, delinquent…and possessed by a force beyond his control! Around the world, evil spirits are awakening: “Stands,” monstrous invisible creatures which give their bearers incredible powers. To save his mother’s life, Jotaro must tame his dark forces and travel around the world to Cairo, Egypt, where a hundred-year-old vampire thirsts for the blood of his family. But the road is long, and an army of evil Stand Users wait to kill JoJo and his friends. |
Studio: David Production | Director: Naokatsu Tsuda |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://wwws.warnerbros.co.jp/jojo-animation/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Daisuke Hirakawa, Daisuke Ono |
Things to Note: One of the most enjoyable series in 2012/2013, we get to see the continuation of the Joestar line once more. Crusaders contains the most popularly known characters and episodes of the series; introducing JoJo’s distinctive Stand phenomenon, and the emblematic protagonist Jotaro Kujo. It begins in the last chapter of Volume 12 (Chapter 114) of the series, continuing to Volume 28 (Chapter 265). |

Captain Earth
Description: One night right before summer vacation, Daichi Manatsu, a second-year in high school, sees a weird round rainbow floating in the sky above Seed Island (Shuushi/Tane Island) and ventures there alone. He has seen this rainbow before. With the memories of his father’s mysterious death and an encounter of a mysterious boy and girl, Daiji arrives on the island while the alarm of a building labeled “Earth Engine” is going off. Someone asks him “Are you a captain?” just as robotic intruders from Uranus called “Kiltgang” arrive. The battle around the shining stars is about to begin. |
Studio: Bones | Director: Takuya Igarashi |
Source Material: Original Composition | Website: http://captain-earth.net/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Hiroshi Kamiya, Miyu Irino, Ai Kayano, Rina Hidaka |
Things to Note: Same team that did Star Driver, which caught me off guard and was pretty good. But it is Bones, and you never know if you’re going to get something fun like Space Dandy, heartfelt like Tokyo Magnitude, or ultimately pretty terrible like Eureka Seven AO. It looks pretty, and the action scenes seem legit. The director has done a mix of things, from magical girl and romance, to Mushishi and Soul Eater. I don’t know what to expect, but there’s hope. |

Dai – Shogun – Great Revolution
Description: In the late Edo period, Japan had experienced an unprecedented crisis by Kurofune (Black Ships), the ships from foreign countries. But a giant robot called Onigami, which has existed since ancient time, dispelled the Kurofune ships and the exclusion of foreigners was accomplished. The story begins in Japan where Meiji restoration in 1868 didn’t happen. |
Studio: J.C.Staff, A.C.G.T. | Director: Takashi Watanabe (Freezing, Shakugan no Shana S) |
Source Material: Original Story | Website: http://daishogun-anime.jp/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Tetsuya Kakihara, Ayako Kawasumi |
Things to Note: Well, from the preview alone, it basically looks like a big boobs and selective physics fighting show. The director did do freezing, which implies there will probably be a lot of selectively placed light beams. |

Selector Infected Wixoss
Description: WIXOSS is a card game that’s popular with teenagers. Supposedly there exist “Rulig Cards,” female character cards with wills of their own. Special girls can hear the voices of the Ruligs, and those who possess them are called Selectors. These Selectors have card battles in a dimension that other humans cannot access. It’s said that whoever triumphs in these battles will have their wish granted. Ruko Kominato is the latest girl to find a Rulig card. She names hers Tama, and without any further explanation is thrown into her life as a Selector. |
Studio: J.C. Staff | Director: Takuya Satō (Steins;Gate, Say “I Love You”) |
Source Material: Original story by LRIG | Website: http://selector-wixoss.com/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Chinatsu Akasaki, Ayane Sakura |
Things to Note: Takuya Satō of Steins;Gate, joined by Mari Okada, who is charge of the original series scripts. You can’t say it doesn’t get more intriguing than that. But, it is a show about a card game. While they’re trying to spin it for an older crowd, I just don’t see it happening. The PV tries to be edgy with creative cutting and music, but I can’t see that holding up. |

Mushishi: The Next Chapter

Studio: Artland / Aniplex | Director: Hiroshi Nagahama |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://www.mushishi-anime.com/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Yuto Nakano |
Things to Note: The project is reported to be split into 2 cours: the first 12 episodes airing from April to June; taking a break this summer, with the last 12 episodes airing from October through December. It is planned to cover the remaining chapters of the manga. |

Irregular at Magic High School
Description: Magic is a product of neither legends nor fairy tales, but instead has become a technology of reality since a time unknown to people. Supernatural power became a technology systematized through magic, while magic became a technical skill. A “Supernatural Power User” became a “Magic Technician.” Magic Technicians (in short, Magicians) are nurtured through Magic High Schools and Universities. |
Studio: Madhouse, Aniplex | Director: Manabu Ono |
Source Material: Light Novel and Manga | Website: http://mahouka.jp/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Saori Hayami, Yūichi Nakamura |
Things to Note: It’s a tough call with this one. While it does fit the definition of a typical shonen combat series, it does have some interesting moments. It has a bit too much brother-sister romance for my liking. And there is a bit of a harem element. I don’t know if the remaining good stuff will be enough to make the show interesting, but who knows. If the show gets a decent budget, then at least the fight scenes will be good enough. |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvQgeMl7NlE |
Daimidaler the Sound Robot
Description: There is a high school boy named Madanbashi Kouichi who has Hi-ERo particles, the power source to operate the robotic weapon Daimidaler. With the help of Sonan Kyouko from the mysterious Prince Beauty Parlor organization, he stands up against the Penguin Empire that troubles humanity. |
Studio: Genco | Director: Tetsuya Yanagisawa |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://penguin-empire.com/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Nobunaga Shimazaki, |
Things to Note: Another giant mecha show. Yes, I realize it’s supposed to be a comedy. Animation is a bit iffy. Female costumes make me wonder about the plot. Lots of perverted moments. As Scamp puts it: “Oh Japan~” |

Brynhildr in the Darkness
Description: When he was a child, Murakami was infatuated with a girl he called Kuroneko. She insisted on knowing about aliens and having met them, but no one believed her, even young Murakami was skeptical. One day, she decides to show him the aliens, but an accident occurs and Kuroneko dies while Murakami is left seriously wounded in the hospital. Years go by and Murakami obsesses on finding proof of the existence of aliens because of a promise he had made with Kuroneko. Then, one day, a new transfer student comes to his class, who not only looks a lot like Kuroneko, but is named Kurohaneko. And even though she insists on never having met Murakami before, the girl has superhuman strength and seems to even be able to predict the future. |
Studio: Arms, VAP | Director: Kenichi Imaizumi |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://www.vap.co.jp/gokukoku/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Azusa Tadokoro, Risa Taneda, Ryota Ohsaka |
Things to Note: Aliens, magical girl, and a childhood love lost, and time paradoxes. Preview implies a mystery surrounding our generic male lead. It’s hard to overlook that Arms is doing this, with their history of big boob fighting anime. We’re almost guaranteed crotch and boob angles, with some quality light sources. I also can’t ignore the “harem” tag this show is getting as well. The manga starts out pretty blookdyThe first three episodes will be really telling on this. |

One Week Friends
Description: High schooler Yūki Hase notices that his classmate Kaori Fujimiya is always alone, and seemingly has no friends. After approaching her Kaori reveals that she loses every memory of her friends each Monday. Despite learning this, Yūki endeavors to become her new friend every week. |
Studio: Brains Base | Director: Tarou Iwasaki |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://oneweekfriends.com/ |
Notable Seiyuu: None, lots of fresh voices for our leads |
Things to Note: Not a lot to go one with this director. He been involved with Gurren Lagann and Eureka Seven, and a bit of Star Driver. Hard to say how this will go. I’m guessing the same crowd that liked Nagi no Asukara will enjoy this. Because, it’s all about the feels. |

Black Bullet

Due to the Gastrea virus’ intervention, the Cursed Children could only be female. Civil Securities are formed to specialize fighting against Gastrea, operating with the pair of an Initiator, who are cursed children, and a Promoter, serving to lead the cursed children. Ten years after the war, Rentarō Satomi, a high school student who is also a Promoter in his childhood friend Kisara Tendō’s Tendō Civil Security, along with his Initator Enju Aihara, receives a secret mission to prevent the Tokyo Area’s destruction. |
Studio: Kinema Citrus, Orange | Director: Masayuki Kojima |
Source Material: | Website: http://www.black-bullet.net/ |
Notable Seiyuu: |
Things to Note: Studios didn’t stand out at first, but after a little bit of searching, Kinema Citrus has been involved with Tokyo Magnitude 8, while Orange was on Majestic Prince. Director did some storyboards for Mysterious Girlfriend X as well. That gives some hope, right? Preview doesn’t give much away, and I should probably give the novel a look. This should could go either way. |

The Comic Artist and His Assistants
Description: A life description about the mangaka Aito Yuuki and his assistant Ashisu Sahoto. Aito doesn’t understand the feelings of the characters in his stories so he asks Ashisu to help him. Ashisu would do anything for the work—she will even let him touch her breast so he will know how it feels like?! The Habit?! The Pervert?! Can we understand them? That’s the comedy of a mangaka life. |
Studio: Lantis, Zexcs | Director: Takeshi Furuta |
Source Material:Manga | Website: |
Notable Seiyuu: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Saori Hayami |
Things to Note: a 4-koma adaptation, about the ecchi hijinks of a mangaka and his assistant. I’m not laughing. Director seems inexperienced, some of the seiyuu are new to the business. |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTeCrE4oMN0 |
M3 Sono Kuroki Hagane

Studio: Satelight, flying DOG | Director: Junichi Sato (Pretear manga) |
Source Material: Original Story | Website: http://www.m3-project.com/ |
Notable Seiyuu: |
Things to Note: Pretear Junichi Sato teams up with Mari Okada. This show is another original story. Looks pretty, has some robots, teen drama, and other stuff. It’s Okada, what do you expect at this point? |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11A1M5CmjdY |
Nanana’s Buried Treasure
Description: The story centers around the treasure of Nanana, a ghost who was once a beautiful but NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) girl. A boy named Juugo was disowned by his father and forced to transfer to a high school on the “Special Student Zone,” an artificial island. With only 40,000 yen a month to live on, Juugo chooses a low-rent apartment that happens to be haunted by Nanana. Juugo and members of the school’s adventure club join a “treasure hunt royale” on the island for the Nanana Collection, a treasure that possesses a mysterious power. |
Studio: A-1 Pictures | Director: Kanta Kamei |
Source Material: Light Novel | Website: http://www.nanana.tv/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Kana Hanazawa, Yuuki Ono |
Things to Note: One of the new shows in the noitaminA block this season. Adapted from a 6 volume light novel series. the light novel took the top prize at the 13th Enterbrain Entertainment Awards in September, 2011. Now I take that with a grain of salt, since other light novels receiving the award (Kokoro Connect) have been on the fence in terms of quality. And the director is has limited experience as well. He had a hit with Bunny Drop, and dropped the ball on Ore no Kanojo. Lots of “what if?” with this one. |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrlNZLrGkqk |
Kerero
Description: Sargent Kerero and his platoon have been sent to the planet Pekopon (Earth) to gather intel for his planet’s invasion force. However, after a crash landing, he is split from his comrades and forced to take shelter in the home of the Hinata family. The two youngest members of the family find him, take away his advanced weaponry, and now stand as the only line of defense between safety and their planet’s destruction-via-frog-aliens. |
Studio: Sunrise | Director: Haruki Kasugamori |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://keroro.com/flashanime/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Houko Kawashima, Chiwa Saito, Jouji Nakata |
Things to Note: A second adaptation of the Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog) manga series, this time in 5 minute, flash animated format. The director hasn’t much to his name outside of the DD Houkoto no Ken flash miniseries, proving his affinity for the format. All of the original seiyuu are reprising their roles, save for the voice of Fuyuki Hinata, Tomoko Kawakami, whom had passed in 2011 due to ovarian cancer. Houko Kuwashima, the second seiyuu from the original’s episode 203 onward, will reprise her role as Fuyuki. |

Studio: Production I.G. and Xebec | Director: Tetsuro Amino, Nobuyoshi Habara |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://breakblade.jp/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Souichiro Hoshi, Chiwa Saito, Yuuichi Nakamura |
Things to Note: A TV adaptation of the film series with some newly animated scenes added. Even so, the film series was fantastic, and well worth a rewatch or 3. |

Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql6n7r4On34 |
Soul Eater NOT!
Description: The Death Weapon Meister Academy—DWMA for short, is a special institution for humans who are born with the power to turn into weapons and the wielders of these weapons, called meisters. While the students of the “EAT” class train themselves to become warriors of justice, the “NOT” class is for those who just want to control their powers with the intent to not become a threat to others and to themselves. Tsugumi Harudori is a halberd demon weapon who takes part in the NOT class and befriends two meisters, Meme Tatane and Anya Hepburn and is indecisive about which one of them to choose as her partner. The series follows the daily lives of Tsugumi and her friends as they learn the ropes of the DWMA and have occasional encounters with the characters of the main series. |
Studio: Bones | Director: Masakazu Hashimoto |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://souleaternot.tv/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Aoi Yuki, Haruka Chisuga, Saori Hayami |
Things to Note: The director has fairly decent chops, having directed Tari Tari and Conqueror of Shamballa, while serving as an Episode Director or Storyboard for a couple dozen other shows. This could be his break-out work. |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2E_zw2I7wo |
Ping Pong The Animation
Description: Makoto “Smile” Tsukimoto is a quiet high-schooler who’s been friends with the loud and energetic Yukata “Peco” Hoshino since childhood. They’re both in the local table tennis club and both have a natural talent for it, although Smile’s personality always enables him from winning against Peco. The club teacher, however, notices Smile’s talent and tries to make him gain some sportive tenacity. |
Studio: Tatsunoko | Director: Masaaki Yuuasa |
Source Material: Manga | Website: http://www.pingpong-anime.tv/ |
Notable Seiyuu: Kouki Uchiyama, Masako Nozawa |
Things to Note: Masaaki Yuuasa is an amazing director, the man behind Kaiba, Kemonozume, Cat Soup, The Tatami Galaxy, and most recently Kick-Heart. His art is always very unique, and by the PV it seems as if he is being given full artistic licence with the source material. This, in my eyes, is a good thing. |

Notable Afterthoughts
Blade and Soul |
Description: Alka is an assassin for the Clan of the Sword. She’s on a journey to find the woman Jin Valel, who killed her master Hon. Jin is a demon-like woman who controls the Energy of Chaos and kills without feeling – not unlike how Alka has learned to kill in her work as an assassin. On her journey, Alka encounters three strange women, each great warriors in their own right, and grapples with her slain master’s wish that she leave the life of an assassin behind. |
Things to Note: An anime adaptation of the Korean MMORPG, Blade and Soul. |
Preview Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI1_73pprUI |
Dragonar Academy |
Description: Ash is a student at Ansalivan Dragon Academy, attended by children who have formed contracts with dragons. He possesses the “star mark,” the sign of a contract, but since his partner hasn’t been born yet, he seems insignificant. The awakening of the dragon he’s raising inside his body is triggered by an incident, and it emerges in the form of a young girl. |
Things to Note: Light novel adaptation, but involves a generic male character getting lucky by having a beautiful girl fall into his lap. Sound familiar? |
