His own life runs parallel to his creative process, and while he may be curious about the outcome, he’s not concerned by it. Rather, he’s ignited by the lessons, growth, and opportunities that come from honoring your process and pursuing your passions regardless of your circumstances. As young as 8 years old, Matthew recalls always having a notebook by his side to write down lyrics anytime they channeled through. He grew up in the era of vinyl records and cassette tapes, jamming to hair bands like Poison, Whitesnake, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi. He was enamored by the power of rock and listened for sheer enjoyment. Influenced by the genre's raw energy at a young age, we timelapse to Matthew as an adult, where his life experiences led him to rediscover a faith he had always carried within him. While the emotional conviction of rock shaped his guitar playing and songwriting style, it was his life’s journey that naturally integrated Christian themes into his music. He shares an example of when he wrote his first Christian rock song in 2001 called “Rise Above," which marked a reckoning with his own sins, and an acknowledgment that things had to change. However, while he was growing in character, he recalls that it wasn’t until later in life that he embraced the true blessing of faith when faced with another hardship. He elaborates on a time he went through a debilitating divorce, and as he navigated the painful disentanglement from the complexities of family separation, he found himself at his lowest point. And in that moment of exhaustion and total breakdown, the lyrics: When your heart is bawling, You know that Heaven’s calling …out your name Represent a pivotal point in his story. In his newest single, “Heaven’s Calling,” Matthew shares that when you’re at your most vulnerable it’s exactly when God speaks the loudest. Heaven is calling your name to show you there is hope and love even in the darkness.“God is working on you and he will get you through it. You have to have faith through the storm,” he states encouragingly. Another theme in “Heaven’s Calling,” that Matthew unravels is the humanity that births from devastation. In the May 18th premier of the “Heaven’s Calling” music video, there are images of hurricane damage, flooding, and rescue missions from the disaster. Hitting close to home, literally and figuratively, Matthew shares that after the destruction of Hurricane Helene in 2024, he witnessed firsthand the valor of those rescuing, the heart of those helping, and the resilience of those who survive a natural disaster. “Love is powerful; the best of people through devastation is remarkable,” he says. “And for those, Heaven’s calling [too].” In conjunction with the hurricane footage and rescue scenes, other parts of the music video feature Matthew performing on rooftops around downtown Charleston with different historic backdrops like St. Michael’s Church, Cannon Park, and the Charleston City Market. After building a storyboard and scouring the city for permits and approvals to shoot different church features and historic sites, Matthew and his team creatively, and thoughtfully sewed all the pieces together. Part of obtaining those permits involved submitting the song’s lyrics, and it was serendipitous, almost as if the city was equally onboard about spreading his message. With the success of it all, he was able to literally sing from the rooftops that “Heaven’s calling out… your name.” While reflecting on the development of the project, which he shares was his favorite aspect of it all, he emphasized the gratification of creating something from nothing. “To do that is such a blessing. It's a process of creation, and you have to be flexible and fluid and enjoy the ride. It’s not about the money or the outcome - it’s about the journey” he says. He also humbly noted that he couldn’t do it alone. He knew that bringing his vision to fruition required collaboration and the culmination of many parts from key producers and session musicians, to cinematographers and municipalities. Pulling back the curtain even more, Matthew began writing the song at the beginning of 2025, and with his melody, lyrics, and chord structure in place, he set out to find high- quality professionals to level up his creation. He gives a shout-out to David Kershenbaum, renowned producer for Tracy Chapman and Duran Duran, who livened Matthew’s vocals and musicality. Excited by the result, Matthew shares that “Heaven’s Calling,” will be the first single in an upcoming EP. What’s more, Matthew shares that a goal of this is that after learning from his experiences, he wants to share and impart lessons and resources to other musicians embarking on creative endeavors through his production and publishing company, Imagine Peak Studios. By making music that brings her a feeling of happiness, it never feels like a task to her. This theme is the connecting through line across the whole project with each song being an expression of this perspective which Melody lives by. “I’m still a damsel but I'm not in distress. I’m collecting my resources, I’m collecting a bag and I’m using my femininity to do it. I don’t feel like I have to fit into any of the roles like a wife or mother that society tries to label women with. I’m in a good space right now and I feel like there are multiple other women in this space too. They’re damsels but they’re not in distress. They’re living their dreams and living their lives their way.” she said. Melody keeps her fun, freedom based approach to music present in all aspects. “Exposed” was actually created while she was in the studio working on other music and with the idea coming from her producer Ozzy, the song just came together naturally in a spur of the moment way. For Melody, this type of collaboration is a regular occurrence and combining ideas is one of her favorite aspects of creating music. That purpose really comes through in the lyrics.” Leah Dibut’s voice, known for its velvety tone and soulful delivery, brings a dynamic range of emotions to “Thank You.” Reflecting on the creative process, she said, “One of my favorite elements of the song is how it feels. The titular track “Who Are You” is a powerhouse debut of their evolved sound and welcomes listeners to a new era of The Reckless. Since its debut, the band has undergone a complete sound evolution. The Reckless began during the pandemic as a one-man show by frontman Fritz Fayman. Joined by talented musicians who shared his vision, Fayman soon welcomed bassist Michael Kennedy, who would become a mainstay member. During this period, the band released one EP, The Get in a Fight EP, while trying to strike harmony with fleeting band members. Soon after, they encountered Riku Myllykoski, who joined the group on drums. Within months, John Kelly joined on guitar to complete the group. “Our sound has become more advanced with our current crew,” shares Fritz Fayman. “Everyone is doing more to the song—it’s not just me writing everything. Everyone is doing their parts, which allows for a blending of our styles. There is a level of humility amongst all our band members. We’re each figuring out what we’re good at and combining influences and sounds to reach our potential and continued potential.” Now, The Reckless weaves the distinct interests and musical backgrounds of the four members to create the robust, authentic, and captivating sound found in their latest EP, Who Are You. The band is committed to releasing new music every 3-4 months to connect with their growing fanbase. “We started making singles for content and creating new music as we worked to nail down our sound as a group,” shares Fayman. “We were practicing for two hours twice a week to make sure we were the best band we could be at live shows.” Their effort has paid off, as demonstrated by captivated audiences during their powerhouse performances. Who Are You combines four unique songs into one memorable EP. The titular single, “Who Are You” opens the stage, followed by the rock anthem “Do it for Free,” the pop- punk banger “Home,” the reimagined throwback song “GO ON,” and the thoughtful finale “Remember Me.” Each song contributes a new layer of complexity to the group’s sound, which comes together with Fritz’s emotive singing from track to track. The headline track, “Who Are You” began as a riff Fritz put together. “I brought it to the band and asked what they thought. The song turned out to be an example of the whole band working together. Riff, base line, drum bits… we each contributed our part.” “The EP is a great example of how much we’ve grown,” adds Fayman. “There is such a difference between our first EP and the newer EP that demonstrates our ability to evolve.” “Who Are You” was born from a casual exploratory session, during which Fritz Fayman developed a riff in drop d tuning—inspired by some of the more metal bands Fritz had recently been listening to—that was heavy yet simple. Playing around, he created a rough outline of the song and brought the band in to contribute their thoughts. “It brought out the vibe of a walkout song for a baseball pitcher,” explains Fayman. “It’s about to go down right now. That excitement from the feeling of watching your favorite player walking out.” The drumbeat was created using rim shots (outer edges of the drum), followed by a heavy bass sound. Then came the addition of a guitar riff. “As we played more, the song came together. Intro. Verse. Lyrics. We took inspiration from a post we made where we got our first kind of hate comment. We laughed because we’d made it with that first hate comment.” As Fayman explains, it’s not about the people writing hateful comments, rather about getting past negativity and writing a great song to counter what they were saying. “It’s an angry, upbeat, powerful song,” he adds. “It’s a great example of everything The Reckless is capable of and does with its wide variety of dynamic shifts, hard-hitting moments, pauses, and impactful lyrics. I’m really proud of that song.” At the end of the day, The Reckless wants listeners to know that it’s worth giving your passion a shot—and really trying your best. They’re excited to keep entertaining live audiences and giving music lovers a chance to unwind and feel free to express themselves.
