Seeds of Sunshine - A mother-daughter podcast
Season Three, Episode 122 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about life's indelible moments through komorebi, as well as the latest real estate updates. On this Seeds of Sunshine: Looking back at our mother/daughter podcast that Sophia and I started three years ago. We plan to continue with the same great and inspiring content, with Sophia continuing as the editor and introducing our guests from UC Santa Barbara, where she will be starting college next week. I came across a great concept, Komorebi, a Japanese word which literally means sunlight leaking through trees, or as I described it in my article published on Medium , I see it when I stand still during my runs, I feel like I'm steeping in nature to sip sunshine, living and loving the light in a world of shadows. Komorebi - the topic of this episode is this light that we all want to welcome into our lives and to seek during our daily lives, maybe during a walk, during a run, or just by being in your office or in your home. Author Hector Garcia defined komorebi as "the sunlight leaking through trees, a display of sunbeams filtering through tree branches." As far as our real estate market, there is beauty in being a buyer right now. You can see some komorebi out there, some light after experiencing really crazy prices that kept going up and up for us in the Sacramento region. Price negotiations are quite possible. The sellers are still understanding that they have to adjust their prices. So we see a lot of price reductions or price improvements out there in our real estate market. And basically, that's a really good thing for the buyers. And another great thing for my buyers is the fact that, finally, they have more choices. In recent years, there were very few listings on the market, so everybody was fighting for a few out there, and now that has become much better for the buyers and the sellers that I work with. Season Three, Episode 121 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about personal transformation and finding the light within us with international bestselling author David Richards. David Richards is a former Marine Corps officer with 15 years of service, a corporate leader in Customer Experience at Cisco, and a sought-after executive coach specializing in Executive Presence and Transformational Leadership. His work has guided senior leaders at some of the world’s largest financial and IT companies, including Fidelity, Microsoft, and Cisco, helping them elevate their leadership and communication impact at the highest levels. As a #1 international bestseller author, he helps people awaken their divine identity and step fully into their faith-driven purpose. With a unique blend of biblical wisdom, neuroscience, and practical leadership strategies, David is here to challenge the way we think about success, faith, and personal transformation. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: David talks about his f ascinating journey from a near-death experience as a child to serving as a Marine Corps officer and later thriving in the corporate world. After his near-death experience, David realized that his life had purpose, which inspired him to write his book Becoming One with Christ - The Lessons of King David. David believes that we possess intellectual mastery, which involves understanding something. There's also cognitive mastery. Because through the power of incantation, through the power of our voice, we can actually change our physiology and change our nervous system. And just because someone grows up in a different culture, with a different background, or with a different belief system, that doesn't mean they're wrong. There's no reason that we should judge them for that, because that's what they've grown up believing. There's a universal nature to what it means to be human. David encourages his clients to get clear on what they want from life. Our journeys of transformation begin within our hearts, with ourselves being ready to make those changes. Season Three, Episode 119 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about Danny Lehr ’s strategy to take control of your time and start winning the next hour. Danny Lehr —a sought-after speaker, entrepreneur, author, and former competitive athlete who’s obsessed with helping people accomplish their biggest dreams… one hour at a time. He’s the author of Win Your Next Hour, a high-impact guide for getting unstuck and taking bold action when life feels overwhelming. As the co-founder of the lifestyle brand Caffeine & Kilos, Danny has built a multimillion-dollar business, coached elite athletes and high performers, and shared stages with leaders across business and sport. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: What holds people back is that they don't know where to start, right? And so they don't end up doing anything because they're afraid they don't know how to start, or they're going to take the wrong steps. Danny thinks that we have so much to learn from our adventures, such as his bike ride around Lake Tahoe, which is 72 miles and 4,000 feet of climbing. Just keep going. Just get to the top of this hill; it'll level out. Danny’s favorite word is W I N, an acronym for success. The first step is to use our words. The second is investing money, time, and effort. And the N stands for note your progress. Danny points out that the entrepreneurs he works with are successful because they saw an opportunity and went for it. Maybe they were scared or nervous, but they took the opportunity. 1 The Art and Science of Sourdough Bread with Mother of Three and Environmental Scientist Leigh Patterson 25:46
Season Three, Episode 112 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about the art and science of sourdough bread making and how to balance motherhood with running, hiking, and environmental sciences from our guest, Leigh Patterson . Leigh Patterson is a mom to three children and a Senior Environmental Scientist. She enjoys staying active, spending time outside, running, hiking, camping, and exploring. She and her husband have a small chicken farm. They enjoy gardening, building things, and doing projects around the house. Leigh also bakes sourdough bread and is passionate about helping others do the same. Sourdough is both a science and an art, and Leigh believes anyone who wants to learn truly can! On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Leigh calls balancing out motherhood with her business and athletic endeavors a juggle. However, she prioritizes athletics and running, which helps her with everything else. Leigh started baking bread about eight years ago to have a healthier option for her family. As people asked questions about the sourdough breadmaking process, Leigh created a curriculum and a class. Then, she hosted her first class for a group of friends at her house. As a biologist, Leigh is interested in the science of making bread. Sourdough is a very flexible and dynamic process. Leigh quoted a baker who said, "It takes 10 loaves to get comfortable and 10 years to get good." We've all heard of prebiotics and probiotics. Sourdough is baked in the oven, so those microorganisms don't survive that baking process. It's too hot for them. However, the fermentation process actually alters the cellular structures and creates new compounds. This is true for any fermented food, and scientists have grouped those compounds into this general category they call postbiotics. Sourdough refers to the process, so we can have sourdough bread, waffles, etc. To connect with Leigh Patterson: Home | OaknEgg Oak ‘N Egg (@oaknegg) • Instagram photos and videos OaknEgg - YouTube OaknEgg's Amazon Page Support the show Full editing credit & art design to my daughter Sophia Micsa. Season Three, Episode 109 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about writing, creativity, and making changes in your life with our guest award-winning author and educator, Bonnie Garvin . Bonnie Garvin fell into writing quite literally. She was pushing 30, married, and in therapy, trying to figure out if she wanted to have a baby. Her therapist suggested going back to university and taking classes that sounded interesting. Bonnie signed up for a class that sounded like it had to do with journalism. It was an advanced playwriting class. The play that Bonnie wrote became a finalist for the most prestigious playwriting festival in the U.S. When Bonnie received that notice, for the first time, she thought she could become a writer! Bonnie gave up her job, convinced her husband to give up his law practice, and set off for New York so she could pursue a career as a writer. Over the last thirty years, Bonnie continually invented and reinvented herself, creating a more diverse and multifaceted career than she could've ever imagined back then. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Bonnie thinks everybody needs to write, but not everybody needs to become a writer. Bonnie recalls something she learned as a child that has helped her become the good storyteller she is today. Since her mother was controlling, Bonnie learned early on to lie and cover things up so she wouldn’t be discovered, which translated into her storytelling gifts. As a screenwriter, Bonnie learned she could also write personal essays, so she greatly believes in reinventing herself. During COVID, Bonnie created a storytelling lab. She had been teaching at USC for a long time and needed something different to encourage her students to write and reflect. Bonnie is a huge believer in paying attention to the world around us daily, which helps us tell infinite stories. Season Three, Episode 108 Join your hosts, Carmen and Sophia Micsa, to learn more about becoming the best student, how to take tests well, and developing more critical thinking with our guest, Jesse Hartman. Jesse Hartman became the co-owner of Hartman Tutoring in 2006 and has over 20 years of tutoring experience. As a student at Emory University, Jesse worked part-time as an SAT tutor/teacher. He aimed to reach learners not as a teacher but as a mentor and academic guide. Jesse has prepared students for nearly every standardized test and every available subject. He is currently the Director of Hartman Tutoring and continues to tutor in NYC and beyond. Jesse is also an accomplished poet and award-winning lyricist. “Keep on asking until you understand. Keep on asking until you feel like you have a grasp of the subject that you're trying to get a hold of. There's no sense of walking away being like, I still don't really get what's going on here.” – Jesse Hartman “The purpose of critical thinking skills is to have a sound view of how to come to a valid conclusion and recognize something as true versus not. It's harder than we think, especially in a world where many very large entities benefit from duping us, either as individuals or as collectives. Sometimes it's scary to have an opinion or a viewpoint or a vision of reality that differs from the masses.” – Jesse Hartman On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: As the owner and director of Hartman Tutoring, Jesse specializes in counseling, coaching enrichment, and test prep tutoring. Jesse believes students use his tutoring services to improve their executive functioning or critical thinking. Hartman Tutoring has been a family business. Jesse particularly enjoyed working with his mother and seeing great results in students’ learning and developing their critical thinking skills. Jesse’s opinion about standardized testing. He sees it as a grand subject that has a lot of ups and downs, but it's just something complicated for us in society. It's an imperfect mechanism that serves a purpose and contributes in many ways to the functionality of the educational system and to the societal world that we live in. Jesse is a big believer in preparing the child for the road, not the road for the child. Therefore, there are many ways that kids can become successful. It’s taught me about putting in the work and then just seeing results over time…Now in any endeavor I pursue, I go into it with that mindset of water on a stone- you just keep chipping away and doing good work, stay consistent, and look for ways to just move up one rung of a ladder at every time.” Kim Conley in an interview with Dominique Smith on Lactic Acid Podcast . On this Seeds of Sunshine: Kim Conley’s childhood lesson is to really believe in ourselves and go after the things we want to achieve. We talk about the two important Rs in Kim’s life: running and reading. One of Kim’s goals for next year is to run the Brooklyn half marathon, which she won this year and absolutely loved the energy. Kim thinks it is important to stay consistent in running life and business. Kim believes that lofty goals need to be broken down into manageable steps, and then we can go after them. Kim shares her big dreams and goals that she wrote in her high school journals. There is a connection between running and reading because you have to develop patience, perseverance, and consistency. Kim loves to read not only because it is a great recovery in between her running sessions, but also because it gives her a different perspective on things and life. Regarding Next Best Run , the coaching company that Kim Conley runs together with her husband Drew Wartenburg, she explained with sincerity: “Having a business and running it, yeah, a lot of times I feel like I'm just making everything up as I go along. On the road to success, Rob thinks that we all need to be like diamonds and pursue the right amount of pressure and heat by constantly challenging ourselves. Rob also has salient advice for women entrepreneurs, which includes strong social connections. Rob is certain that to achieve success, we need to be intentionally flying our own FLAG. Now, Constantin adopts a growth mindset. Constantin talks about the difference between being resilient on the outside vs. true inner resilience. Season 2, Episode 72 Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn more about Leigh Shulman’s ideas about creativity and writing. Author and writing mentor Leigh Shulman founded The Inspired Writer Community, a women writers network for writers at any stage in their writing lives. Her bestselling book The Writer's Roadmap: Paving the Way To Your Ideal Writing Life helps thousands find their way in the writing world. She writes for the Washington Post , Wired , and Insider among others. Shulman lives with her family in the mountains of Argentina. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Shulman talks about moving from New York to Argentina and how her lifestyle has changed to a simpler life not centered on money, as it used to be when she lived in the US. Working directly with writers, Shulman realized that people don't really know what they want, so she created a writer’s roadmap, which matches accomplishing more in life as well. When it comes to writing and pursuing one’s goals, Shulman’s salient advice is to be really, really selfish in carving up time to write and devote to one’s passion. Writing is not an indulgence, but our livelihood. The idea behind the Inspire Writers Community is to help people figure out what they want and then really make it happen. Season 2, Episode 68 Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa and learn about our guest Beth Wonson , who is a conversational guru and will teach you to become one as well! Beth Wonson developed the Navigating Challenging Dialogue® process out of a desire to help herself become a better manager, leader, parent, and friend. As she began working with the tools she developed, she got requests to help people, teams, and organizations become better at having tough, but essential, conversations. In 2010, Beth Wonson & Company was launched. Since then, Beth has been speaking, coaching, mentoring, and training individuals and teams. Now, Fortune 500s, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools use the tools and strategies of NCD to become communicators who empower others through meaningful, drama-free conversations. NCD is now a proven tool for improving culture, clarity, and retention in organizations. To reach even more people, Beth has now published two books for implementing NCD: 1. Turn This Conversation Around: The 4-Stage Process for Communication with Connection 2. Mastering Feedback: Everything You’ve Never Been Told About How to Give Feedback . On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Beth Wonson talks about the four-stage process when it comes to communication. The first step is the story . Step two is sifting just like a kid, who goes to the beach and uses those little plastic sifters. You put all the sand in and shake it and what's left, hopefully, are treasures, rocks, stones, and things that are important shells. Step three is how to manage our own emotions . So in stage three, we're kicking the tires and making sure that it's our conversation. Everything we're bringing to the conversation needs to be relevant. Step four is a process of managing ourselves so that we show up in the best way possible way. Wonson’s powerful communication tool is the phrase that she expands upon during our conversation “Grace is in the space,” which is about pausing, being present, and not rushing to respond. Curiosity and understanding are crucial in fostering good conversations. To purchase Beth Wonson’s books, go to her website , or wherever books are sold. 1 Advice on How Women Can Excel in Sports with Christine Yu, Award-Winning Journalist/Author of Up to Speed 39:31
Season 2, Episode 63 Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa and learn how the latest science can help women achieve their athletic potential. Christine Yu is an award-winning sports and health journalist. Her book UP TO SPEED: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes was published on May 16, 2023 by Riverhead Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Yu earned her B.A. in Art History from Columbia University and her Masters of Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University. Her essays have appeared in The Washington Post, Outside Magazine, Runner's World, Family Circle, SELF, Eating Well, VICE, and ESPNW , among others. Yu lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and two sons. She is a lifelong athlete who likes to run, practice yoga, hike, swim, and surf. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Christine Yu explains the main two reasons she chose to write this book: to address the bias against women and to understand as much as possible about female physiology, since her father was a neurosurgeon. She thought it was weird that in sports, women are understudied as opposed to men. Yu talks about the myth of losing one's period as being a good thing. Sports instill belief and confidence, which is why knowing how to stay healthy is important. Why intermittent fasting is not that great for female athletes as opposed to men. Proper fueling and nutrition are essential to keep our bodies in a state of balance. Underfueling can lead to a cascade of problems that affects the reproductive system first, as well as bone and gut health. When reaching menopause, women don't have to give up sports. Instead, they need to adapt to their new bodies. The goal of sports is to be a life-long athlete. Last, but not least, Yu's seeds of sunshine for all listeners is to make time for life's little joys. Season 2, Episode 58 Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn about hacking life after 50 with author Mark Barnes. Mark Barnes is a longtime educator, entrepreneur, and co-author of Hacking Life After 50: 10 Ways to Beat Father Time and Live a Long, Healthy, Joy-Filled Life. He is on a quest to live past 100 and bring anyone interested along for the ride. Mark's parents were great models for living a long, meaningful, joy-filled life. They believed in showing up, working hard, and helping people in need. Mark followed their example and became a teacher and a coach. During his nearly 30 years in education, and especially when Mark turned 50, he realized he had a lot more to do in and out of the classroom. Physical and mental well-being and living until and beyond 100 became obsessions. Together with his like-minded friend Jim Sturtevant, Mark decided to share their journeys and everything they know in Hacking Life After 50 with practical strategies to make this happen. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Mark wishes to debunk the view of the elderly that they're broken down, that they're diseased, and that they can't. Both Mark and Jim learned through education, research, and most importantly practice that people can, in fact, live long, hopefully to 100 or beyond with joy and in good health if that's what they want. Longevity is a hot topic nowadays. After having learned and practiced, Mark and Jim decided to write their book as various hacks to let everyone out there who has the same similar problems learn how to solve those problems and how to live a long healthy life. Some of the hacks: creating purpose, or even maybe recreating purpose . Their favorite phrase is "the momentum mindset," which is a set of attitudes devoted to growth. Sleep is arguably the most underrated factor in longevity. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: Emily talks about her enchanting childhood in Zimbabwe and how grateful she is to explore our beautiful world. Having grown up on a large farm, Emily was first inspired to run by seeing her mom go out on runs around their farm. Emily's days on the farm started early, so she went to bed at 8 p.m., which serves her well as a professional trail runner. Emily believes running is a freeing sport and she loves that she can run in the mountains and not do triathlons anymore, as biking long hours on the roads was not that enjoyable. Emily is also a coach, training others. She views her running as "her gateway to exploring the world." Emily explains how athletes must adjust their training volume and intensity based on running and life stressors. Balancing recovery and training is quintessential. Emily's advice to runners is to run 10 minutes less in order to make room for strength training to keep strong and stay injury free. Emily's golden rule is the 10-day recovery after a big race. She believes in NOT rushing her recovery. Emily loves to add variety to her training, mixing in speed with long runs. To her, this feels magical. Her multigenerational advice regarding encouraging kids to run is for them to try as many sports as possible to see which one they like most. Nutrition is something that Emily also takes quite seriously. She also loves desserts and thinks they have their place after a hard day. Her best advice regarding injuries is to focus on one's weakness and get stronger, which should involve mobility and core exercises a few times a week if not daily. Episode 49 SEASON TWO COMING IN JULY! Stay tuned! Join your hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn how to finish what you start with Tim Vandehey co-author of Swipe: The Science Behind Why We Don’t Finish What We Start together with Tracy Maylett. Tim Vandehey is a New York Times bestselling ghostwriter and journalist of more than 60 books . Dr. Tracy Maylett is an author and an expert on organizational psychology and employee engagement. They have collaborated to write "Swipe: The Science Behind Why We Don't Finish What We Start," the first book to examine why so many of us fall short of our goals again and again or quit jobs before giving them a chance. Whether it's trying to get in shape, lose weight, write that first novel, save for retirement, or any important goal, most of us try over and over and keep failing. WHY? "Swipe" is the first book to answer that question. Tim and Tracy will share why "Swiping"—instinctively retreating from a goal when the pursuit gets too hard or uncomfortable—hurts us in our growth and our relationships, and how we can stop. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode: · Swiping equates to quitting and how that impulse works. · Why swiping makes people become burdened with regret. · On average, people start and quit something five to six times. · Quitting occurs for two reasons: faulty expectation and faulty motivation. · Why having a coach/mentor helps us finish what we start and keeps us from swiping. · Struggle is not bad when it helps us grow and make us more resilient. · What is quiet quitting? Tim says it is disengaging. · Swiping vs. tapping out · Tapping out is escaping from a toxic situation and is not an impulse like swiping; it is intentional and positive. · Swipe = regret. Tap out = no regret. · Motivation vs. expectation before starting a new goal/project. It’s important to identify the red flags. Sarah Finniss is a 36-year-old certified yoga instructor, stretch coach, and personal trainer. She has a background in the arts and early childhood education. To add more to her accomplishments, Sarah is a newly launched children's book author and illustrator. Her new children's book Iris' Magical Yoga Adventure invites its readers to escape with sweet Iris and her mom on an adventure into their imaginations as they explore famous landmarks around the world through yoga poses. The book isn't just about teaching the basics of yoga and mindfulness but provides an opportunity for children to learn about famous landmarks around the world through movement; engaging visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. It includes fun activity pages for learners to be creative and reinforce what they learned. This book plays into the mind-body connection. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode, you will learn: Building self-esteem and just finding balance when they're anxious is something that a lot of kids are looking for right now. In her first book that Sarah wrote and illustrated, she hopes to inspire children to be creative in their learning. How to become more inspiring to others by pursuing things that are challenging. Sarah's message for children who try yoga for the first time is to just take their time with it, for certain stretches and poses work for some people and not for others. Sarah remarked that when aligning movement and breath, we can change our energy by moving in different ways and also change our mindset . There's a balance between the strength aspect of yoga and the letting go aspect , which means building and finding that strength within ourselves, while at the same time kind of releasing any thoughts or emotions that we don't have control over. To make meditation more enjoyable , Sarah recommends paying attention to small moments , such as when you're drinking your morning coffee or tea. Feeling the heat of the mug on your hands? Or if you're running, think about your feet hitting the pavement. If you're having a conversation with someone, putting the phone down, and just making the extra effort to be fully present and give your undivided attention. Vinnie also outlines three things that we all need to do to get discovered. Show up with valuable information to earn a seat at the table. Build yourself as the source, not the story. The importance of building your image on IMDB . And last, but not least, Vinnie values humor and humility in life.
