The Gut Check: Nutrition and Gut Health for Recreational Athletes

I am so honored that Kathy was willing to share her story. Many people are private about their health and wellness journey, so it is exciting that she is willing to open up about her path in hopes of helping others learn: there CAN be answers! Kathy started with a Symptom Score of 47 (predominantly migraines/headaches, anxiety, and fatigue) and in less than 60 days, we got her down to a beautiful 28! She came to me frustrated, anxious, in pain. She had no answers from not only her conventional medicine practitioners, but even her Functional Medicine doctor was leaving her feeling hopeless. He had her taking the Everlywell test every 4 months, which created food anxiety with no symptom relief. And they had her on so many supplements she was stretched on money. And they began to say "we can't figure it out, you must have an autoimmune disorder creating these issues - let's go deeper, do yet more labs, and do yet more supplement protocols" Instead, we got the RIGHT test for her, and results were nearly instant. Here she is, sharing her story of how the Empowered Program has been different from other food sensitivity and functional medicine programs; how the relief of food anxiety has played in her life, and how, overall, she just feels better, is happier, and is able to be more “present” for her family. What you put on your skin matters – we absorb so much of what we put on our skin, and there are links to cancers, lymph issues, hormone imbalances, and more. The importance of this has really been driven home in the past few months as I’ve been doing an advanced intensive training in hormone health. And hormone balance is so, so, so important! Not just for women, though there do tend to be more risk for imbalance, because the female hormone cycles are so complex and intricate, from age to age, as well as month to month. But hormone imbalances have been found in numerous conditions such as various cancers, PCOS, endometriosis, preeclampsia, osteoporosis, PMS, and harsher perimenopausal symptoms. Environmental toxins, water pollution, pesticides, and more. Problems with plastics, BPA, perfumes and fragrances, detergents, shampoos, soaps, dry cleaning chemicals, and even bleached female hygiene products… So today’s podcast interview is with Angel Baker, who has been on her own learning journey about chemicals and safe skin care and cleaning products! She is a massage therapist who was appalled at what was being used on people by massage therapists, and over the years has cleaned up the products around her, created some of her own products, and teaches regular health tips in her newsletter, Thursday Thoughts. If you ever use protein powders , collagen, or other performance supplements, you do NOT want to miss this episode. Did you know some protein powders contain more carbs than protein? Does your protein drink have protein from whey, casein, or soy? They don't have to specify. They can even use random amino acids to bulk it up, leaving you with a potentially incomplete protein. Did you know "grass fed" cows may only have one day of eating grass, if sources in the US? The economy is getting tighter, and the bottom line getting darker as companies try to cut corners to cut cost and/or boost profit. You may be at risk of more contaminations, or at the very least, not getting what you think you are getting. This is a nod back to an old recording Andee and I did, and it's now become a Gut Check Episode! And we're rewinding and going back to basics... What IS "healthy eating" and what IS "inflammation"? Let's explore! Andee and I go on a virtual tour of the grocery store to help start explaining what we mean by "healthy, whole foods" and pitfalls to watch for. We don't hit all the aisles, but join us as we start with: Whole foods vs "Edible Food-Like Substances" Plate portioning Produce and organics Don't our bodies detox themselves? Meat, poultry, deli meat, and subgroups Fat-free vs full-fat dairy and when to pick which Saturated Fat and Coconut Oil Fish and Mercury Starches (whole grains, starchy veggies) Gluten Touch on Spices and Oils And then we tie it in to how "inflammation" works for and against the body - why this matters, and why healthy eating matters! The tides are turning! I have been in the functional medicine and functional nutrition realm, focusing on gut health and root causes for over a decade – and it’s really exciting to see that this method is spreading to doctors finally! I was so excited to meet with Dr. Thomas Morse, who has been a practicing MD since the 80s, and worked Emergency Medicine since the 1990s – and he watched the evolution of medical care to go from patient-centric to feeling that it was being guided more by government and insurance companies rather than doing what was best for the patient. His daughter, Steffany Morse, who has a background as an occupational therapist, also joined the conversation, since they are now working together in their own health practice, INNOVATIVE WELLNESS. But both of them realized this missing gap in health care, and learned of new ways to help people. They desired to create a bridge between conventional (allopathic) medicine and functional medicine. They also learned about some commonly lacking chemical nutrients that can assist in nearly every aspect of health and discuss that here today! They blend the energetics side with more common aspects – nutrition, supplements, lifestyle, and clinical work. So listen in to hear about their methods and research, and set up a free virtual consultation with them! info@innovativewellnessllc.com IG: @Innovative_WellnessLLC FB: https://www.facebook.com/innovativewellnessllc2021 or just Innovative Wellness LLC Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/innovative-wellness-ohio Interview in City Scene Columbus: https://bit.ly/TopDocTips Support the show…

A lot of people are starting to understand that antibiotics can screw up your gut microbiome, but did you know there are other medications that are detrimental to your digestive system as well? Or that over half of the people on a PPI acid reducer are being taken without appropriate need? And if you are, you shouldn’t be on it for more than 8 weeks max? In an older episode, I shared about the risks behind treating supplements like candy. Medications are no different – and come with even more risks! But we have become a society that doesn’t balk at the massive side effect lists on even the most benign-seeming prescription drug. We have normalized the idea of “prescribing cascades” and the vicious cycle it creates; and this is a topic that is critical to look at, because 70% of adults are on a prescription medication. Licensed Pharmacist Victoria Shea Swick has an open and candid discussion with us today about the good, bad, and ugly in the medication world. Medications have their place, but should be used mindfully. You should be empowered to understand what you are putting in your body, and what limitations doctors sometimes have on their ability to take time to fully vet multiple medications if you are seeing multiple specialists. We discuss: Drugs that can negatively impact gut health, flora, and nutrient status Long-term problems with chronic PPI use The differences in brand name vs generic products Gluten and corn as fillers in tablet vs capsule How much attention people need to pay to those extensive “possible side effects” lists with medications Taking medications to offset side effects from other medications, which are for other medications. polypharmacy and the prescription cascade The new push for “de-prescribing” Medications that can inhibit weight goals How pharmacists can help you understand your medications and options The common medication athletes use that can cause GI damage Pharmacists are an under-utilized resource, and I encourage you to reach out to yours, or to Shea, for guidance, especially if you are taking multiple medications or worried about potential side effects of polypharmacy issues! Torn tendons? Surgery, no more! At least, that's what science and case studies are starting to look at -- how to get the body to naturally heal and regrow torn tendons! And what may be some of the implication from that, regarding repairing your own cartilage to help with osteoarthritis? It today's episode, I will review some basics on how collagen works, and the difficulties of getting nutrients in to your tendons without exercise. Then we'll dive into a case study and various research from Dr Keith Baar of UC Davis, professor and researcher with the Functional Molecular Biology Lab. He has many fascinating interviews on various podcasts (links below) and i'll hit some of the key points he's made from all of them in this episode, as well as review a case study from 2019 where they completely healed patellar tendinopathy (damaged tendon over the kneecap, "jumpers knee") in a professional NBA player with just 20 minutes of rehab per week! Surgery is controversial for knee pain, with many study reviews showing it has almost no benefit to skipping the surgery, and sometimes even sets the knee up for more issues down the road because you've now caused a controlled trauma to the knee. So it's exciting to see research showing the advancements not only in how to heal tendons (and maybe cartilage eventually??) but also how to properly train and feed the tissues to help prevent injury. 1 Mindset Shifts for Busy Moms and Women Business Owners: Flourish in your Health to Flourish in your Life 43:46
Busy parent or overworked C-suit staff? It's so easy for people to put their own health last, thinking they need to take care of all the other things first - work, family, household. But the truth is, when you take a little time to take care of yourself, you actually have MORE time, energy, vibrancy, and productivity to put towards those other parts of your life! Sheri Nash, a busy mom and business owner. She was a client of mine a while ago, but her background is so common, I am excited to have her share her journey and things she's been able to learn and do along the way. Starting from "I don't even have time for breakfast because I need to take care of everyone else first" to now involving her kids in meals, playing even more tennis, and expanding her business ventures, Sheri has had a beautiful shift in her mindset to focus on her health in order to bring a better quality of energy to every other aspect of her life. In addition, focusing on personalized nutrition helped with her asthma, joint pain, tennis performance, and weight loss that she thought would never budge. Her story is so motivating! You CAN feel good, you CAN take care of yourself without "mom guilt," and you CAN thrive in your business without losing your health! Listen in to hear how she does it all!
