Have you ever drank a beer out of your shoe? This is essentially what the river community calls a Booty Beer and it's purpose is to prevent future swims, show your respect to your rescuers, and pay dues to the river gods. I personally have participated in this practice and I actually have pretty strong feelings associated with it. In today's episode, I share my opinions and debunk the claims that it is effective in preventing swims. I explain Skinner's theory of Operant Conditioning and provide examples of how we can shift our practices to actually ACHIEVE our outcomes of safety on the river, adequate risk assessment, and building a stronger community with care, support for each other, and intentionality.
