“Even a momentary lack of love and safety as children can follow us for the rest of our lives,” says Rainbow Markell, an early childhood education expert. Since her start in the field in the 1970s, she has been part of some of the most forward-thinking programs that put the idea of “trauma-informed care” on the map. How do you help children identify and regulate their emotions? How can you signal trust and build connections in times of conflict? And why is predictability such an important factor in it all?

In this episode, she and neurobiology expert Rajkumari Neogy explore how understanding these dynamics can hold the key to a big question: what does a trauma-informed workplace look like? They cover the stages of brain development, why breathing serves as the “brakes” to our nervous system, and the “round eyebrow” approach that lowers someone’s defenses and helps them feel safe in an instant.
