In a world where hate crimed can sometimes feel never-ending, I feel like there’s almost a daily article regarding the topic of race which is why today at The Motherhood Kit, we are discussing the important topic of how to raise non-racist kids. On today’s episode, join Yamel to explore ways you can actively promote inclusivity, empathy and understanding in your children’s lives, to nurture a future generation that celebrates diversity and stands against racism.

In this episode, Yamel is joined by her good friend, Kait Hardiman. Kait is a wife and mom of two girls, she is a social media curator and founder of Front Porch Social. She aims to raise strong women who also confidently fight against racism, and you can find out more about her and her business here.

Some of the advice Yamel and Kate offer up in this episode includes:

Talk to your kids

It’s so important to start having discussions regarding race and diversity early on in your home. It’s all too easy to shy away from these issues, but there are ways and means you can make these conversations age appropriate. Seek out books and materials, to help educate yourselves and your children so that they are aware of these issues as they grow up. Yamel’s recommendations of books to add to your library regarding racism, diversity and inclusion can be found below:

Expose your kids to diverse cultures, people as experiences

Actively open your kids eyes to different cultures, people and experiences, so that they grow up embracing, celebrating and respecting diversity. This can be anything from seeking out cultural events and festivals to actively widening your friendship groups so they include people who don’t all look like you.

Address any biases or stereotypes you may hold

As parents, it's important that we reflect on our own beliefs and attitudes, challenge these, and make changes where necessary. These conversations and reflections can sometimes be difficult and uncomfortable, but it’s important to commit to this reflection and learning, to enable you to model inclusive behaviour and language to your children and to be able to use teachable moments to correct any prejudiced behaviour or language.
