**SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 620**
The musical journey of this episode begins with two soul classics by Oliver Sain and Harold Burrage, before moving straight on to the first album highlight, an album of songs by the band The Decisions, some of which have never been released before. The band formed in the 1960s at S.H. Archer High School in Atlanta, Georgia. They had some minor success with single releases on their own label York and on Sussex at the end of the 60s. The British label Soul Direction unearthed some unreleased recordings by the Decisions and released them for the first time on two 45 singles between 2021 and 2022. Now the label has released the album “Color Me Blue”. It contains three more never before released recordings by the Decisions, as well as the songs from the two singles released in 2021 and 2022 and some songs from the singles released on York and Sussex Records. An album of great music from the heyday of the classic soul sound that also presents the work of this remarkable band almost in its entirety.
The Spanish label Soul 4 Real has also specialized in releasing previously unreleased songs on vinyl for the first time, mostly on 45 singles. In the meantime, they have also released some albums and the latest is the compilation “Asking For The Truth (But Praying For A Lie)”, which focuses on songs from the archives of the Malaco, Muscle Shoals Sound and Alarm Records labels and studios. There are also some previously unreleased songs here, all of which are excellent. This compilation is pure Southern Soul pleasure!
Then it’s on to the latest soul: Emilia Sisco’s debut album on the Finnish label Timmion Records, which she recorded with Cold Diamond & Mink, the label’s house band. The renowned band has already worked successfully with numerous artists. Emilia Sisco takes the listener on a gentle journey through the world of vintage soul. Beautiful arrangements, paired with the ability to combine classic soul influences with contemporary flair, make the ten songs sound fresh and unique. The album of the week!
After so much sweet soul, it’s time for a round of Hammond organ funk with drive. The debut album “In Green We Dream” by the trio Parlor Greens is just the thing for this. The three musicians are no strangers: Guitarist Jimmy James was active with the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio for a long time and is successful with his band True Loves. Organist Adam Scone became famous with the Sugarman Three and also has his own band, the Scone Cash Players. Drummer Tim Carman is well known from GA-20. No wonder the three of them clicked straight away. That sounds very good!
Then it’s on to Latin funk and a compilation celebrating the work of Jimmy Salcedo Y Su Onda Tres. Jimmy Salcedo is best known for his work with the duo Elias Y Elisabeth and their hit “Alegria”. But the recordings with his own band are also worth listening to: tropical funk with Caribbean echoes and a touch of light psychedelia. The compilation “El Mundo De Jimmy Salcedo …) was released by Vampi Soul in 2022 and is highly recommended.
The groundbreaking album “Som, Sangue e Raca” by Dom Salvador E Abolicao, which was released in 1971, has recently been reissued by Mad About Records. Dom Salvador develops an explosive mixture of samba, soul, jazz and funk with his band Abolicao. Definitely a highly recommended album!
I have been eagerly awaiting the new compilation Straight From The Decks Vol.4, which Guts has put together with his usual knowledge and stylistic confidence. His focus is on Afro-Caribbean sounds and he keeps discovering amazing gems from the past, which he combines with current songs. This time, too, an exquisite listening experience, which is of course also danceable, as it is representative of Gut’s DJ sets.
Then it continues with a round of Afro-Caribbean sounds, including new singles by Florence Adooni, VuVuVU, Santrofi and Kokoroko, who are at the start with the new EP “Get The Message”. Enjoy listening to this episode!
