**SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 616**
A light pinch of soul in your ears never hurts …
We start with the wonderful 7″ EP series “From Detroit With Love” and the two recently released episodes 5 and 6, which once again present us with previously unreleased soul gems on vinyl. As always, the best quality and these two episodes also completely delight 60s soul fans like me.
Then we continue with the compilation “This Is Mod”, which was compiled by Dean Rudland for BGP Records and features the soul side of mod culture. Souljazz Records also has a new compilation in the program, the second in the Miami Sound series with soul, funk, disco and boogie from the years 1968 to 1974. The soul scene in Miami was shaped by Henry Stone’s TK Records and its numerous sub-labels such as Alston, Cat, Glades and Dash. From this rich repertoire, Stuart Baker has put together a nice selection for Soul Jazz Records, which I again find very successful.
The first album with new music comes from Kelly Finnigan. The singer and keyboardist of the Monophonics has released his third solo album “A Lover Was Born”, which offers an exquisite soul sound. Kelly Finnigan has created an album that is both in the tradition of legendary Midwest soul labels and transfers this into a timeless soul sound that is clearly anchored in the present day. A fabulous, really great album and therefore the record of the week!
The Golden Rules label has been active in Leibzig for a number of years and has launched “The Originals”, a compilation series featuring current soul and funk productions from Germany, Europe and beyond. The focus here is on little-known but very interesting bands and artists. The fourth installment has recently been released and, as always, there are exciting things to discover.
Trumpeter Dave Guy may be familiar to fans of the Dap-Kings. But he has also played in numerous other bands. Now he has released his first solo album “Ruby”. Very nice, predominantly instrumental and relaxed grooving sounds!
From Darmstadt comes the band Theodor, which I only recently discovered. Their self-titled debut album was released at the end of February 2023 and has already been repressed several times. The band has developed a very unique and modern soul sound that gains in charm with every listen. So it’s high time to present this wonderful album. The band’s new album has already been announced for the end of November. I’m really looking forward to it.
Joel Sarakula’s music could be categorized as soulful pop or yacht rock. His new album “Soft Focus” shows that Joel Sarakula has a knack for wonderfully relaxed grooving songs that mix timeless soul, funk, soft rock and pop.
A little over a year ago, Ziggy Zeitgeist, Lewis Moody and Federico Gallotti met in Naples to produce an album as Ex Generation that pays homage to the musical spirit of this city and also builds a bridge to the European crossover club music scene. They have succeeded in doing this brilliantly, as you can hear on the album “The Napoli Exchange” released in June of this year. Great!
Finally, there’s something new from the Baker Brothers, a UK funk band that has been active for over 20 years. With their new album “The Next Last Party”, they present themselves with a fresh sound that puts you in a good mood.
Enjoy listening to this episode!
