Well, Eli is the man to tell you. This kind of musical prowess and ability to deliver is an incredibly unique skillset. Eli got his start as a jazz musician and worked his way up through the ranks learning lessons along the way.
When Eli first started on SNL, he asked Andy Samberg, "Any advice?" to which Andy replied..."Just do what we want". And that says it all. You must be able to adapt to every scenario in order to survive in the SNL world.
