Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD
Manage episode 353778908 series 3439158
On today's episode, I talk about my experience growing up with undiagnosed ADHD. It's important to note that everyone with ADHD is different, but I share some hopefully relatable experiences from my childhood. I have always felt a little bit different from a young age. When I was really young I had a strong visual ability and was very creative. I couldn't understand why the other children were drawing the sky as one blue line at the top of the page when the 'sky' was the air all around us and I refused to follow the crowd. On the flip side I had terrible feelings of shame and rejection and almost physical pain if I thought that I had done something wrong.
I also couldn't read a book until I was well into my 20s. I only really started reading novels as a way to cope with boredom while traveling on the train (pre smartphone era). One of my other special talents is interrupting people but as a way of connecting and empathising, not for reasons of rudeness or narcissism.
