South Africa has announced that it will be leaving the International Criminal Court. Only three days prior the government of Burundi announced its decision to leave. Gambia has also made its announcement and thrown in the towel. What do these actions mean for the ICC and other African states? Is the ICC doomed to fail? In this 10-minute podcast we speak with Media Law expert, Will Youmans who is an assistant Professor at The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs. He explains the faulty history of the ICC and how that has led to its complexities with African states. We also talk with Gringo Wotshela, a producer and video journalist with the BBC News in Washington, D.C. who lived in South Africa for forty years.
