Text: Prov 15:10-12 ESV

10 There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die.

11 Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord; how much more the hearts of the children of man!

12 A scoffer does not like to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.

- Prov 15:10-12 ESV

A SEVERE DISCIPLINE

A wayward person can expect only a severe discipline. Stepping away from the established path means entering into uncertain, dangerous, and often deadly areas. Whoever strays from the path can expect adverse consequences. There is a way that seems right for a man but the end is death.

God loves His children. Thus, He disciplines them when they wander from the narrow path. The scripture teaches that "the Lord disciplines the one loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."[ Heb 12:6] His intent is not to crush our spirit but to keep us from harm. (Prov 15:4), His plan is to make his erring child better, not bitter; to draw him closer, not push him away, and to lift him up, not put him down. It should be noted that a person’s response is well to discipline if he confesses his sins and receives cleansing, as a result. John writes, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." [1 John 1:9] However, if the wayward person rejects correction, death may result. First John 5:16–17 exhorts believers to pray for a brother who sins, but explains there is sin that leads to death, for which believers should not pray

Solomon argues that God's infinite knowledge includes His understanding of death, eternity, and the consequences of sin. God sees Sheol and Abbadon. Sheol is the word for the unseen world, which refers to death or the grave in the Old Testament. Simply put, the Lord sees everything and everyone in the realm of the dead. God also sees Abaddon and everything in it. In the New Testament, Abaddon is the king of demons in the abyss, the" bottomless pit." [ Rev 9:1,11] Undoubtedly God sees the hearts of every man. Sadly, the scoffer remains hard -hearted. He shuns reproof. He won’t go to the wise and listen.
