France considers this a gift to the world. By 1853, an estimated three million daguerreotypes per year were being produced in the United States alone 1841 -- Delacroix Christ on the Sea of Galilee 1841 -- American John Goffe Rand, a portrait painter and inventor, invents the tin paint tube. The tin tube allowed unused oil paint to be stored and used later without drying out.
