Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. With 69-84% of women out there struggling with their relationship bodies, it's clear that this is a pervasive problem and something we need to be addressing. So where do we begin? 1 Reshaping Identity: Breaking out of gender roles, releasing internalized patterns and beliefs 28:45
The conversation last week sparked a lot of interest. A resounding "that is my life" from the ladies in the crowd. So while I had planned to take the pod conversation in another direction, I found myself instead taking a little pause to give it all a little more thought. The question I’ve been sitting with and digging into: WHY? Why are things seemingly changing and yet barely changing at all? Why are the men who want to support change still lagging behind in their actual change and contributions and how are we, as women potentially contributing to our own problem? Today I’m going to give you the perspective that come through the work I do. How this ties into EMDR, healing, breaking patterns and change. Women, whether they are single, married, mothers or not are doing more of unpaid work in our world then men. This is true from age 18 on, peaking at 35 to 45 years. 75% of unpaid work is done by women. Globally, that 11 billion hours daily. Statistics show that women are doing at least ⅔ of the work to care for home and family on average, regardless of their their employment status, regardless of how much they make. So what can we do? Today we’re taking a different angle on health, wellbeing and longevity. She has reshaped the way I’m looking at health, becuase not only are her findings valuable and relevant, they are showing us that human connection is undeniably a cornerstone of health. It is more impactful than genetics, healthcare and our health behaviors (like how we eat, how we take care of oursevles) in predicting how long we will live. 1 Somatic Yoga: How Interoception and Embodiment Are The Key to Healing Body Image and Improving Satisfaction In Our Lives 29:34
Today we are talking about somatic healing, interoception, that internal felt sense, can become a compass for not only healing, but for living more aware. We'll also talk about how emodiment, that thing that so many with body image challenges fear, is actually the antidote to body dissatifaction and could be the answer to feeling more satisfied in your life. How do we feel better in our skin? That's what this one's all about. Today we are talking about Emotional Spending. Money is a whole thing for us as humans and how we spend can be a pretty charged subject. Studies suggest that about 70% of us have struggled with emotional spending, but I’d wager that that number should be higher. Almost 6% of us have a shopping addiction or compulsive buying disorder. Whether or not this is diagnosis level, even occasional bouts of it can wreak havoc on us. Today we are talking about why we buy. Emotional spending, impulse buying and more. Where the patterns develop and what we can begin to do to understand and change them. If life and relationships have been hard, I hear you. My hope is that what we are talking about today will help... So we are going to talk the WHY behind resentments, what happens when we hold them, and how to start to move through and beyond them. How’s that sound? I’ll share with you my own present day practice that I’m using to dig in and clear out all the things that could otherwise build up and wreak some havoc. Link to Boundaries Episode HERE . Today we are joined by Katie Hammil, Katie is a registered dietitian, her dietary philosophy is steeped in science and years of education and learning through her own experiences and those of her clients. She truly believes that there is no one universal style of eating that we should all follow. She wants to help people become more confident in how to feed themselves and their families. Katie’s here to help us break down food, how we can adopt a simplified approach to how we eat to give our body more of what it needs rather than taking a restrictive approach that makes us feel like we need to eliminate. She’ll talk with us about not cutting foods out, rather starting where something is missing. Katie has followed all of the trends and has watched the research unfold to show what is and isn’t best for all of our bodies. And I’ll give a little spoiler alert here: In the long run, eating in the basic way she is going to outline is our best method for health and longevity. We’ll talk about to let go of the judgments of what we don’t know about this stuff and how to stop judging foods, to instead slowly build an understanding of what works for our body… Our body that is different than our bestfriends, different than our husbands, our daughters and what that means for us in meeting our own needs. You can find Katie on Instagram @katiehammillnutrition and her website katiehammillnutrition.com You can still get 40% off of the Nervous System Reset , it's a great way to gather (or move through on your own, self-paced) to build some new practices to balance out stress, to ground your nervous system and to truly begin to understand how you can strength and change the way you and your body respond to stress. I am excited to share. When you sign up you'll get your Guide to begin plus access to an hour long workshop to get you started TODAY! Message me your Questions HERE : ashley@ashleymchan.com…
Today, we are talking about how we eat… About the nutrition education most of us have never gotten. The confusing messages we’ve received and where to go from here. Did you know that most people aren't able to accurately assess the quality of their diet? That most people think they are doing great when that might not be the case? So let's see if we can close the gap. Later this week we’ll have Katie Hammill on to talk to us about nutrition. What we need to know, how to find our way through the maze of information out there to get to what’s really important and at the end of the day, to feel good about food. In this episode Ashley will walk you through questions to assess where you are when it comes to nutrition. Her journey is one that many will relate to, when "best practices" go to far and suddenly you're left feeling like it's never enough. Learn how she moved away from tracking, counting and over-doing to find her way back to herself, to intutive eating, and back to the forms of movement that actually support her. We also touch on kids, how we can approach food and eating with them to prevent disordered eating patterns, food anxiety and fear. More on this in episodes to come... Today, we are going to take life scan. A self-check to see where you are at in managing your energy, what your got to give each day and what feels like it is burning you out… Because we all feel this a little, don't we? Those things in our lives that take more than they give. Moments when we feel like we are running on fumes, our tanks empty. We’re going to assess where your time and energy are going on the obvious and less obvious levels. Where you WANT it to go and WHERE you would like to be spending less of it. We’ll look at what’s in your control, lovingly acknowledging that which is not so we can focus where we see possibility. We’re talking about an exercise in zooming out and looking back to see where some of these things really started… The patterns in relationships, in the way we work, in the way we live that put us out of balance, that spread us thin, and what we can do to start to reset and change that. This week we are joined by Mary Katherine LeMaster, affectionately known as MK. As a 13 year old she received the news that she would inevitably go blind. The idea of being different challenged her, but the changes that occurred woke up something in MK that helped her find her way thru the dark. MK leads mindfulness and accessibility workshops to teach forward thinking businesses and organizations how to make their spaces and places inclusive for the visually impaired and blind community. She says,” The blend of mindfulness and accessibility goes hand in hand in this learning environment. Our world can’t be inclusive if we are overworked, too busy, or in a constant state of stress. The slower we move, breathe and think the easier it is for us to create a mindful and heartful world where every community has a seat at the table. I am helping build a future world I want to live in.” And I think that says so much about her and her work. Listen to learn more about this phenomenal women (she’s funny too). This week, we’ve got a guest. I brought along Dr. Gilly Kahn to talk to us about ADHD in adults, what it looks like, why it’s missed and the challenges that we can face as a result. For the highly intelligent, successful people that I work with, considering this diagnosis has been challenging. There is such a pervasive stigma around this diagnosis and I’m hopeful that today’s episode opens your mind and expands your view, that it has you reconsider. Learn about aspects you may have missed or misunderstood as well as way we can cope. Do you want to Change Your Relationship with Food ? The program begins this month, to save your seat, click here ! This week we're talking diets, weight loss and the inevitable weight gain that most experience. From clean eating to intermittent fasting some of the most revered approaches to diet can lead to preoccupation with food and patterns of disordered eating. Research is showing that dieting, that is restricting the way we eat in some way shape or form, is likely to result in a return to our original weight within a year, and now we are seeing that dieting can lead to gaining back more than was originally lost. In today's show we'll take a peak into the science of it all to understand why diets fail (and why you aren't a failure if they don't work for you).
