"So I think this whole idea of cumulative culture is a way to make humans exceptional. But it's clear to me that humans are exceptional, and seeing it through baboon glasses, I can understand in a different way why they're exceptional. But many of the things that we think are uniquely human are actually present in other animals." - Dr. Shirley Strum Dr. Shirley Strum is a groundbreaking anthropologist who has spent over five decades living alongside wild baboons in Kenya. Her work has transformed our understanding of these intelligent, socially complex animals — their relationships, their adaptability, and the intricate societies they create. In her new book, Echoes of Our Origins , Shirley challenges long-held beliefs about evolution, the human-animal divide, and what it truly means to coexist. This conversation is about science — but it’s also about humility, hope, and the messy, beautiful complexity of life on Earth. ×August is always one of my favorite months for sports. No major sports are in the playoffs. College sports aren’t back on the field. But the young ones are doing what they can to head to Pennsylvania for the Little League World Series. I try to watch as many Little League World Series games as possible during August. I love the passion and the honesty from these preteens. And while we’re often reminded that there’s no crying at baseball. We all know that that’s not true when you’re talking about young players. They know they’re on TV. They do their best to hold back. But sometimes the pain is just too much… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895b2d58').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895b2d58.modal.secondline-modal-68933895b2d58").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
We usually associate teenagers with the need to be fashionable, but as many parents learn going through the back-to-school season, that desire starts much earlier in life. Kids need to fit in. And sadly, a lot of that can revolve around the clothing you wear. For families with money, it’s a lot easier situation to deal with. For those without it, it can have lifelong implications. Style, back in my day, wasn’t all brand-focused. It was about fitting in. We all shopped at stores like Sears and Penny’s. But as mall culture grew in the 80s, so did the need to fit in. Designer jeans and shoes were just the start… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895b6162').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895b6162.modal.secondline-modal-68933895b6162").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
No one likes to find themselves in uncomfortable situations. That’s especially true the younger we are. As we age, we realize we sometimes have no choice. But according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, we should do everything we can to encounter more uncomfortable situations. His advice to Gen Z is that by doing that, they’ll become more successful in life. Now, I don’t think he guarantees they’ll become billionaires like him, but he believes that the more we place ourselves in those situations, the more comfortable we become, and the more adept we become with them. And that, in his eyes, leads to success… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895b906b').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895b906b.modal.secondline-modal-68933895b906b").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
It may sound like I’m nitpicking here, but bear with me. Recently, I’ve seen some ads for a new product, or at least I think it’s new, called RYZE mushroom coffee. Actor Neil Patrick Harris has starred in a few of these commercials, and they just confuse me. How can something be coffee if it doesn’t just use coffee beans? What’s the process that makes it into this coffee? I’m honestly confused. They discuss the taste and how you feel when you drink it, but did coffee need to be replaced? Perhaps it’s due to the cost. Or maybe it’s the new tariffs driving this. I’ve looked for answers, and that leads to more questions… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895bc6e1').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895bc6e1.modal.secondline-modal-68933895bc6e1").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
Many parents are wrapping up their back-to-school shopping, as the kids head back to the classroom over the next couple of weeks. For many kids, wearing the right shoes or clothing is essential. But it seems that one of this year’s key status symbols for kids when they head back to school is their backpacks. I always focused on the function of the backpack rather than the brand. But I’ve never been focused on the latest trends. Back in my school days, the lunchbox you carried was a status symbol. Every year, new ones came out, sporting the latest TV stars or cartoon characters. Boy, have times changed… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895bf740').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895bf740.modal.secondline-modal-68933895bf740").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
I’m a very blessed person. I’m not saying that I’ve accomplished a lot, but I have done so much. Following my father around the country throughout his broadcast career, then into my 20+ year career, followed by my 10+ years in the music business, I’ve experienced a lot of things. And sometimes I’ve experienced so much I’ve forgotten about things, or don’t remember exact details. My wife has been alongside me for roughly 30 years, and many of the things I did, she was a part of. She’s always had a better memory of details. I always lean on her to remember things. Well, last night the shoe was on the other foot, I remembered something she didn’t… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895c2d29').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895c2d29.modal.secondline-modal-68933895c2d29").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
Whenever I’m under the weather, my wife reminds me that there’d be no harm if I were to miss a day of the podcast. It’s not like it’s a job. I don’t get paid to do this. And it’s not like I’d be disappointing millions of people. I’ve had another encounter with a cold or the flu this week. This summer, it’s hit me hard. And I don’t know why. But yesterday, I almost took a day off from The Mason Minute for the first time in 14 years. That should give you an idea of how rough I feel. As you can see, I didn’t take the day off. When it comes to the workplace, there are two kinds of people: managers and people who report to them. Now technically, I’m oversimplifying things. And there’s a significant shift going on in the workplace right now that you might not even notice. It happens gradually, but over the summer, Millennials have overtaken Generation X as the largest number of managers in the American workforce. And while the baby boomers held that title for a long time, by the end of the year, they will be overtaken by Gen Z. With this shift in the age of managers comes a vast change in management style. And it looks to be a significant change… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895c8e1d').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895c8e1d.modal.secondline-modal-68933895c8e1d").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
If you’ve followed the podcast, even for just a short time, you know I can head down internet rabbit holes at the blink of an eye. I was scrolling through Facebook the other day and saw a survey that listed the 15 least attractive hobbies to women. I began investigating the origin of the survey. When doing that, I found another study: the 15 most attractive hobbies to women. I never knew women had so many thoughts on hobbies. When you look at the list, they make sense, both good and bad. But in the end, I couldn’t find the source of either survey, and to me, that was even more fascinating… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895cc531').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895cc531.modal.secondline-modal-68933895cc531").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been out of school roughly 2/3 of my life. While I recall some aspects of both high school and college, many of the details are a blur. They occurred so long ago. Recently, I’ve seen numerous TV commercials for a program that can help you earn your high school diploma. And this isn’t aimed at young people who dropped out in recent years. This program is targeted at everyday adults. And that got me wondering: Do many people in America not have their high school diploma? I understand why people opt not to attend college, but I was surprised by the findings I discovered through my research… Click Here To Subscribe Apple Podcasts Spotify Amazon Music Google Podcasts TuneIn iHeartRadio Pandora Deezer Blubrry Bullhorn CastBox Castro fyyd.de Gaana iVoox Listen Notes myTuner Radio Overcast OwlTail Player.fm PocketCasts Podbay Podbean Podcast Addict Podcast Index Podcast Republic Podchaser Podfan Podtail Radio Public Radio.com Reason.fm RSSRadio Vurbl We.fo Yandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-68933895cf651').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-68933895cf651.modal.secondline-modal-68933895cf651").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });…
I may be oversimplifying things here, but essentially, you can categorize the world into two types of people: runners and non-runners. I say this in jest, but I do believe there's some truth to the subject. All you have to do is take one look at me, and you can tell I'm not a runner. I've never liked running, not even when I was a young skinny thing. However, I know many people who love it. It's part of their lives, and when they don't get to do it, they feel something's missing. My wife's uncle is one of those people. But he hasn't been able to run due to a recent heart procedure. And he can't wait to get back to it... The other night, my nephew Ty and his high school football team enjoyed their annual preseason steak dinner. It's a yearly tradition to reward the players for working hard during the summer. For teenagers, what's better than steak, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, and dirt pudding? To teens, it doesn't matter what kind of steak they're eating. Connoisseurs say, when it comes to steak, the ribeye and T-bone are the most flavorful. I prefer a filet. It's the most tender, and naturally the most expensive. Ty's team enjoyed ribeyes. I think at their age, teenagers aren't going to argue about the kind of steak they're served... Through the years, many retail stores have offered perks for shoppers. Long ago, it was green stamps. Over the past couple of decades, many retailers have established loyalty programs that enable customers to earn points and receive special discounts. Often, these discounts were in addition to their normal sale prices. Some stores even offer price matching. With the advent of online shopping, many stores were forced to compete with low-cost online outlets like Amazon. For a long time, Target was one of those stores that matched prices. However, this week, they just announced that their price-matching plan is going away with very little notice... I'm sure I've talked about this before, but I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I'll drink it in social situations, but I don't start my day with a cup or two. I've always been more of a tea fan. Iced tea, hot tea - it doesn't matter; I love them all. But I cut back my tea drinking to drink more water. Recently, I went looking for an iced tea maker. I had one back in the day, but I don't know where it is. It could be in storage, or perhaps long gone. However, in every store I visited over the last week or two, I found no iced tea machines. It's rows of coffee makers: Keurigs, Nespresso, and even some Mr. Coffee models, but no iced tea makers are anywhere to be found... When I was a teenager, I used to earn extra money mowing lawns. And we didn’t have a gas-powered mower. I had one of those old push mowers. But I didn’t mind. A few extra bucks in my pocket gave me a little freedom. I don’t get the sense that teens these days ever think about mowing lawns. It’s now a business. I encounter more professional trucks rolling through neighborhoods, even on my daily commute to work. They all have big trailers, a couple of lawnmowers, and more string trimmers than they have at Home Depot. Is this happening only in Nashville, or is it widespread across America? No doubt, times have changed... Through the years, I’ve known many people who were uncomfortable driving through tunnels. I spent some of my formative years living in Virginia Beach. And when you live in Southeastern Virginia, you have to learn quickly how to handle driving through them. I can’t remember the first time I encountered one. It was likely when I was 5 or 6 years old, and we were driving through the Rockies. They’re talking about building one here in Nashville to take you from downtown to the airport and back. Elon Musk‘s Boring Company hopes to create one that’s anywhere from 5 to 10 miles long. I’ll believe it when it happens... Now, I'm not sure if this is a law in every city or state, but in most places, you're required to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. In many areas, that's no big deal; there isn't a lot of foot traffic. But when you live in a big tourist town like Nashville, you've got to watch out for people not paying attention. Where I work, near downtown, is filled with tourists. And nearly every day, I encounter someone walking across the street, not even looking up from their smartphone. I have no problem stopping for people as they cross the street. At the very least, they could look up from their phones. But I get the feeling they might disagree... There’s a lot of discussion about what’s wrong with America these days. But it’s not just America, it’s the world. I’ve noticed this coming on for a long time. I often feel it’s a lack of self-awareness. People only care about themselves today. They don’t think about the others around them. Being a big guy, I’ve always had a lot of understanding about the space I take up, about how it’s easy for me to get in the way of others. I’ve always tried to be courteous. I’ve always tried to be aware of what’s going on around me and how it affects everyone. I hope I do a good job, but lately I don’t think it matters. Because all anyone cares about is their personal space... Last week, I talked about listening to some Classic country music on SiriusXM. This week, I've also found some playlists on Spotify to add to the mix. I've discovered many songs that I hadn't heard in a long time. Some of them I loved, while others I didn't. One of those songs is a 1982 hit from country music singer David Frizzell. It was a number one hit called 'I'm Gonna Hire A Wino'. It's a fine song, but one that was way overplayed. It's a novelty record, yet it remains a very traditional country song. And it's one of those songs I don't need to hear again. But this week, I've heard it a ton... Most of us dream of one day being rich. As a youngster, I thought making six figures a year made you rich. Then, when you start making more money, you realize that's still not a lot of money. Then you dream of being a millionaire. But compared to some of the richest people in America, that's nothing. We all know that Elon Musk is the wealthiest person in America, but it's fascinating to note that 47 of the 50 states have at least one billionaire residing within their borders. And the sixth richest man in the US, Bill Gates, isn't even the wealthiest resident of Washington. I can't fathom being a billionaire, but I can dream... Do you ever read reviews for movies, TV shows, books, or music? In the past, we used to pay attention to what the reviewers had to say. Nobody went to the movies without hearing what Siskel and Ebert thought. We had to know whether a film received a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Anyone who loved rock music always had to check out the reviews in Rolling Stone. People even wanted to know what their local critic said in the newspaper about the latest TV shows, movies, and theater productions. However, I can’t recall the last time I read a review to determine whether I would consume some type of media. I know I’m not the only one... This summer has been a hot one. August is usually our warmest month, with temperatures in the 90s nearly every day. We're already seeing that, and it's only mid-July. And what's interesting is that, along with the heat we're experiencing, we're getting pop-up showers almost every day. They're like the heat showers that my parents get down on the Gulf Coast of Florida on summer afternoons. It doesn't rain very long, and it also comes with thunder and a few bursts of lightning. That's followed by a 4 to 5-minute downpour, and then it's over. The rain makes things even steamier, and that makes late afternoons no fun... Any good Midwesterner knows that this is just the beginning of the corn on the cob season here in the US. While you can get corn in June or July, it’s really not best until August and September. That’s when the sweet corn is at its peak and its lowest price. But that hasn’t stopped two restaurant chains from featuring summer dishes with little corn cobettes. Is this just a coincidence, or do we have an overabundance of corn this year? Both Cracker Barrel and Red Lobster have new dishes featuring corn cobettes. Is corn cheap this year? Or are people clamoring for corn on the cob? I find it strange... Product recalls have become a fact of life. Not a day goes by when another product gets recalled. I vaguely remember hearing about them in the early 1970s. However, upon reviewing their history, the first major recall was by Cadillac in 1958. To this day, recalls in the automobile sector happen frequently. Just the other day, Ford announced a recall of 850,000 vehicles for defective fuel pumps. And that was just in one day. And sometimes, you’re directed not to use your vehicle. How convenient is that? While product recalls are a hassle, they do keep us safe. And that’s the critical part... Back in my younger days, I remember TV shows like ABC's Wide World of Sports. There, they showed you all sorts of obscure sports and things like the Harlem Globetrotters basketball. Bowling was also a popular sport on television years ago. But many argued whether bowling was a sport. Baseball, football, basketball, you can take one look at the people playing and know that they're athletes. The other night, I found myself watching the World Darts Championship. And I wondered, is that considered a sport? Are these guys athletes? I don't know, but it kept me engrossed for over three hours... I was sitting around the house last night with nothing to do, and often, when that happens, my mind begins to wander. I was watching television and saw a commercial for the new Superman movie. And I thought to myself, why do we have so many remakes and reboots these days? So much of the media we consume is just an updated version of something we’ve seen before. I realize it’s easier to force-feed us something that the studios know we’ve already liked. But are we that afraid of taking chances? I do wonder. In my younger days, I was obsessed with sports. While I followed most sports, basketball, and baseball consumed my life. But somewhere in my early teens, sports started to matter a bit less. At that point, music became my passion. I didn't have any ability to play an instrument or sing, but with a radio studio always around, I was able to immerse myself in all types of music. It was only logical that music would be a significant focus throughout my radio career. And sometimes, I shock myself with the number of songs I know. Air travelers got a pleasant surprise yesterday. The Office of Homeland Security announced that we would no longer be required to take our shoes off when boarding an airplane. While this was a slight hassle, over the last 20 years, we had grown accustomed to it. Now, thanks to the introduction of the Real ID, the need to remove our shoes magically disappeared. We all know that air travel changed after 9/11, and since then, there have been constant tweaks to the travel rules. To some, this is no big deal. What's that old saying: two's company and three's a crowd? I suppose that's the way you could view American politics and our two-party system. The Democrats and Republicans have done all they can to minimize any other parties coming to predominance. As you know, it wasn't always Democrats and Republicans. Initially, there were the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Plus, later, we had the Whig party. However, throughout generations, we have evolved into the two parties we have today. But if Elon Musk has his way, we're going to become a multiparty system with his new America party, And that could shake up politics as we know it... Recently, we discussed how to maintain a happy relationship with your spouse. Today, we're exploring relationships and how they're portrayed on social media. One thing I've noticed is how some people constantly remind us how great their relationship is and how much they love one another. And while that may be true, new research suggests that most happy couples are essentially deceiving themselves. If a person needs to constantly remind everyone about how great things are, they're likely dealing with relationship insecurity. The more insecure people are, the more they need to remind everyone and themselves that all is well... Two other busier-than-normal times in the hospital are December 31st and January 1st. Of course, fireworks are used on those nights, too. And while I only plan to upload one video and shut down for the night, the YouTube algorithm tries to draw in with a new video that it knows I'll like. It doesn't take long for me to lose track of time...
