Smart Travel: Upgrade Your Getaways

Get fresh NerdWallet data on what your points and miles are really worth in 2025 — and why the answer might change how you book travel. Should you take a $650 flight voucher or 32,500 miles? How much are your points and miles actually worth? Hosts Sally French and Meghan Coyle break down the latest NerdWallet valuations to help you make smarter redemption choices. But first, they cover the week’s biggest travel headlines, including Southwest Airlines’ new partnership with EVA Air, Frontier’s companion certificate promotion and status match, and JetBlue opening up award bookings with Condor Airlines. Then, travel Nerd Craig Joseph joins Meghan to discuss NerdWallet’s latest airline, hotel, and credit card point valuations, with tips and tricks on comparing loyalty programs, maximizing transfer partners, and deciding when cash is more valuable than points. They also discuss the impact of devaluations, how close-in bookings can save you points, and why premium cabins can sometimes offer outsized redemption value. Plus: Craig’s hot take on airport lounges. Card benefits, terms and fees can change. How big an opportunity is home security for technology integrators? A home burglary happens in the UK every 106 seconds. The Office for National Statistics puts the average cost of a residential burglary in the UK at £3,030, and more than one-third of that is the emotional cost to victims. Experts also agree that we are likely heading for an increase in property crime, driven by economic desperation and the stress associated with long-term unemployment. In this episode, we talk to two integrators who work extensively with home security, Steve Moore from SMC and Michael Glarvey from Luuxx Audio Visual. We also learn about what's involved in growing your home security business, how to do it well and where the pitfalls might be. Home integration can be an incredibly rewarding industry but also a pretty stressful one. Many integrators work on their own or in small businesses where it’s difficult to find a work-life balance, especially with work on-site often demanding long hours away from home and meeting high client expectations. Uncertainties arising from the pandemic have made things worse. At least half a million more people in the UK may experience mental ill health as a result of COVID-19, says a forecast from The Centre for Mental Health, and that’s likely to rise even higher after the second lockdown. Meanwhile, another survey found that 73% of all building and construction workers feel that their employers did not understand or recognise the early signs of poor mental health, or offer any support. So, what can be done to manage our health and well-being for the better? The Integrated Home Podcast is supported by Ring X Line, Distributed by Meridian, AWE Europe and Sony. We're joined by Simon Gregory of integration firm, Cinema Rooms, and Rik Henderson, all-round gaming fanatic and Senior Editor at technology website, Pocket-Lint, to talk about how gaming might change the home technology business in a post-COVID-19 world. The UK is the 6th largest video game market in terms of consumer revenues, after China, USA, Japan and Germany. Approximately 37.3m people in the UK play games. Consumer spend on games was valued at a record £5.7bn in 2018 with consoles sales up 6.5% to £702m, despite no new consoles being released. But are these gamers a market for home technology professionals? In fact, should integrators be selling gaming rooms as a distinct concept to their customers, rather than as a bolt-on to their home cinema business? And, what gaming technology will change how integrators can deliver a great, immersive experience in the future? This episode was recorded before the current lockdown came into effect.
