Real, Brave & Unstoppable

Send us a text In this episode, I’m talking about redefining productivity so you can stop feeling guilty for resting. Sometimes rest is the most productive thing you can do — and I’m breaking down how to shift your mindset to truly believe that. If you’re exhausted from always feeling like you should be doing more, this is a must-listen. Shift from "doing" to "being": Instead of measuring productivity by how much you accomplish, focus on how you feel and who you are becoming in the process — sometimes slowing down is the most productive thing you can do. Rest is productive, too: Rest, reflection, and stillness are essential for real growth and clarity. You don’t need to "earn" your rest — it’s part of staying well and showing up fully in life. Detach worth from output: Your value isn’t tied to how much you get done. Redefining productivity means giving yourself permission to prioritize what matters — even if that looks like doing less. Are you enjoying the show? I always appreciate a good rating and a review! It helps others find the show, which is what we want! Send us a text In this episode, I'm talking about the endless cycle we all know too well - every year we start off with tons of motivation to make the changes we've been wanting to make. Whether it's losing weight, getting in shape, eating healthier, being more positive or something else, we end up losing our motivation partway throughout the year (92% of of people quit by mid-February according to one study), beat ourselves up over it and find ourselves back in the same place at the end of the year only to do it all over again. Wouldn't it be nice not to DO that cycle anymore? Listen in to learn about my 3-pillar approach to wellness and creating a life you're excited to wake up to and feel GREAT about as well as 3 simple tips you can put into action to start making change that LASTS today. === RESOURCES === --- This Year is Different: 12 Weeks to Building Strength, Confidence, & Energy that LASTS My new group offering will help you set goals that are IMPORTANT to you and teach you strategies to move toward those goals in a way that is sustainable. Real, Brave & Unstoppable

Send us a text In this episode, I'm diving into holding your head high and taking the high road when you know someone is saying mean things about you. It's painful and hurtful, and yet, it's really all about them, not you. Our brains want to make it about us because we want to belong and fit in, and we have control over what we do to attempt to "fix" the situation but we do NOT have control over the other person or people. Brains don't like not being able to control things. So we're left feeling crappy when people say mean things about us. Tune in to this episode to learn how to deal with this in a way that you can be proud of. Support the show Want more? For more information about the podcast, visit www.realbraveunstoppable.com . Send us a text This week on the podcast, I'm talking to you about the mirror. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and liked what you saw? As we get older, it can get harder. It's pretty common to see our reflection and start criticizing ourselves for all the stuff that we don't like. What if you were able to look in the mirror and see a familiar friend whom you loved and cherished? What if you were able to compliment yourself instead of criticize? In this episode, I'm sharing 5 things you can do each morning to make the mirror your friend, not your foe. === RESOURCES=== Want to know how I can help YOU do this, plus reach all of your health and wellness-related goals? Send us a text In this episode, I'm talking about our thoughts. While thoughts can be really helpful, we also have a LOT of them that are entirely unhelpful. The issue is that we believe the thoughts as facts, and that gets us into some places that feel pretty tough. One of the game-changing concepts in my growth journey is that thoughts are not facts. When I learned that just because I was thinking a thought (i.e. I'm not enough, I'm a failure, I suck at this, etc) didn't mean that it was true, I was able to start developing a lot more flexibility in my brain. I was able to look at things differently and begin questioning the thoughts, stories, and limiting beliefs that were keeping me stuck. In this episode, you'll learn: what thoughts really are and why they can be so unhelpful sometimes strategies for distancing from your thoughts how to challenge a "sticky" thought and work on creating new ones the ins and outs of dismantling limiting belief systems and building up new ones that are more helpful to you in living the life you want to live === RESOURCES === --- Free Discovery Call --- Doing thought work can be really hard on our own because we all have blind spots! Send us a text In this episode, I'm talking about telling the truth - YOUR truth. As a kid, we're taught not to lie--that we should ALWAYS tell the truth. And interestingly enough, throughout our childhoods and into adulthood, we're constantly acquiring information that causes us to alter who we are in an effort to belong, fit in, and be "acceptable" to others. But isn't this also "lying"? The answer is yes. But it's lying to ourselves. Send us a text This week, I decided to re-air one of my favorite episodes (and the MOST DOWNLOADED episode on the podcast EVER... hands down!) Episode #10: Lessons Learned from Pema Chödrön contains some valuable nuggets of wisdom! Pema is a Buddhist nun and author whose work was instrumental in teaching me that I was creating my own suffering by attaching to all the things that I thought I "should" have or the way I "should" be. Her teachings also taught me how to surrender to and accept what IS. This has been the single most important thing I've learned since my life "blew up" nearly 8 years ago. Lately, I'm finding myself having a harder time with that and I've been revisiting some of the resources that helped me learn this very important skill. I've felt the pull to go back and revisit some of her writing and remembered this episode. I thought it would be good to re-share it with you too. Have a listen to "Lessons Learned from Pema Chödrön" - whether it's your first time listening or it's time for a re-listen, it's totally worth your time! === RESOURCES === --- My favorite books by Pema Chödrön --- 📚 When Things Fall Apart 📚 The Places That Scare You 📚 Comfortable with Uncertainty 📚 Welcoming the Unwelcome 📚 Start Where You Are --- Ready to RISE? --- If you're in a place in your life where you could use help letting go of the way you think things SHOULD be, or the way you want things to be, you'll want to check out my new private coaching program, RISE . Real, Brave & Unstoppable

Send us a text Welcome back to the podcast! After my December break, I'm back talking about how to bring some soul into your new year. Did you know that 92% of people that set new year's resolutions or goals never follow through? One of the reasons why is that they set goals that have nothing to do with who they REALLY are. They set goals based on who they think they SHOULD be, or who they need to be in order to gain the approval of others or feel better about themselves. This week, I'm diving into a better way to set goals. Goals with SOUL. If you can tell the truth about what you REALLY want, and tune into your soul to discover WHY you want it, you're going to set goals with meaning - goals that feel GOOD to go after. In this episode, I'm telling you about my method and sharing a FREE 5-day challenge to help you set your own GOALS with SOUL. ✅ You can register HERE https://pages.kortneyrivard.com/2022-challenge In the challenge, you'll assess your current goals and tell the truth about what you REALLY want, deep down tune into your soul and discover WHY you want what you want make a plan for how to keep going when things get hard set some action steps to help you follow through on your goals the SOULFUL way! Send us a text Today, I'm talking about slowing down and why it's important to realize that you're not here to get your whole life's work done in one season. You gotta take time to enjoy life while you're working on your "life's work"! As I was hiking over the weekend, looking at all of the brown, crunchy leaves on the ground, it occurred to me that nature just knows when it's time to take time to let things rest. In the fall, nature knows that it needs time to recharge and rejuvenate so it can give birth to newness in the spring. So why is it that we get honed into what we want in life and get frustrated that we can't get it all done now? Life doesn't work that way. We're on this planet to do a life's work, but we're meant to do it over the course of a lifetime . Not a single season. Listen to this episode for more thoughts on this and a couple of ways you can take time to slow down and enjoy the ride. === RESOURCES === Black Friday Hike @ Sugarloaf Mountain - Dickerson, MD - Click HERE. Send us a text On this episode of Real, Brave, & Unstoppable, I'm talking about body image. Specifically how to love what you've got. One key thing to note is that sometimes it's hard to love our bodies. I get it! If you don't feel great about your body, it can help to shoot for getting to a place of feeling NEUTRAL about it. Meaning, you're not attached to it being any one way or another. The statistics of how many women don't like their bodies is staggering - over 90%! The amazing thing is that the ideal body that so many women use as their "measuring stick" is what we see on the cover of magazines. Did you know that only 5% of the entire population even has the same measurements/weight as those cover models? In this episode, I cover some tips that you can use to shift your mindset to get to a place where you feel neutral about your body. I talk about treating yourself with kindness, as well as digging into the approach of Byron Katie's "The Work". It's a great episode and I hope you get something you can use to help you get to a place of feeling neutral (and eventually loving) about your body. === Resources === I help women learn to love all of who they are. Send us a text On today's episode, I'm talking about rebuilding after a difficult time in your life. I've had many things "rock the boat" in my life, where I've had to kind of regroup and rebuild something. But the one event that takes the cake is the discovery that my (now) ex-husband is gay and the subsequent divorce I went through. I had to rebuild so many things - a career (I had been a stay-at-home mom for the most part for 12 years), my identity, my mindset, and more. I felt like I was starting my life over from scratch in many ways. I've had many people that follow me reach out wondering how they can rebuild their lives and get to a place where they feel like "themselves" again. It's so different for everyone, and the thing to remember is that you won't ever be "yourself" again. You'll be an entirely different person, and likely more YOU than you've ever been in your life. What I have to say in this episode of course applies to major setbacks in life, but you can also apply my thoughts to small "speedbumps" in life. Have a listen! === Resources === Schedule a Breakthrough Call with me today! Send us a text On today's episode, I'm talking about why exercise is not punishment. There's an idea in the fitness world that working out equals weight loss. Of course, this isn't everyone, but it's easy to see how people get into a cycle of trying to "whip their body into shape" by being hard on themselves with exercise. That ice cream you had last night? You can burn it off! Have a dinner out tonight? A good, hard run oughta take the pressure off of all the wine you anticipate indulging in. It's a terrible cycle - trying to skew the calories in - calories out equation in your favor. But what if you were to look at exercise as a way to love and nurture your body? What if you were to choose exercise, or movement, that made you feel joy? Movement that made you feel alive, energized, and happy? It can feel scary to let go of the bootcamp-style mentality for fear that your body might "run away and go to hell on you". If you don't crack the whip, you're going to get fat. Your muscles are going to turn to mush. It's all going to be terrible and go downhill. No! I challenge you to listen to your body and soul. What does it want? What does it need? How can you love yourself with exercise/movement? Listen to this episode to hear my take as well as some ways I think you can change your perspective on exercise. Support the show Want more? Send us a text Today I am chatting with Erica Lee Garcia, engineering consultant and non-profit owner about the paradigm that women have to choose between being a mom and their career. Why can't we have both? Turns out we can. We just can't do ALL the things by ourselves. Listen to this great conversation about balancing everything so you can have the life you desire. We also talk a lot about engineering since we each have that background. Erica runs a non-profit called Engineers of Tomorrow. The goal is to teach kids that the point of engineering is simply to make things better. There are tons of options in engineering for kids who want to vision and create things to improve the planet. We talk about how engineering and careers in the sciences have all kinds of applications for all kids - not just kids that are great at math and science. Such a great conversation with the overarching message that there is something out there for everyone. It's up to us to define what we want and what's important to us and to achieve those goals in a way that is true to us. (and not being afraid to enlist help!) Listen to this episode to learn what gets in the way of simplicity, more on complexity bias, and what we can do to start inviting more ease and flow into our lives. === RESOURCES === Making things less complicated can be, well, complicated . We all have blocks, and when our brain is already wired to want to make things more difficult than they need to be, seeing those blocks can be tricky. I invite you to a free Clarity Session with me where we can chat all about what feels sticky and hard for you right now. I'll give you my thoughts on why that is and what you can do to bring more ease and simplicity into your life. I can also share how my 6-month coaching program can help you simplify your life so you can kick some ass and create a life you LOVE. Reach out to me HERE and I'll hook you up! Send us a text Welcome back to season 3! I've been on hiatus for the last month or so, spending extra time on my upcoming retreat. By the way, if you're feeling like the summer left you overwhelmed and exhausted and you didn't have nearly enough fun,, you should definitely check that out. kortneyrivard.com/retreat In this week's episode, I am diving into our processes and patterns - the way we do things. Some of our processes serve us well, and others, well... not so much. But it's so important to understand your processes and patterns and to be patient and compassionate toward yourself with them. They have been around for a long time and they came to be for a reason!! Once you understand your processes, you can course-correct and make little tweaks (question your limiting beliefs and Stories, etc) to better support you, but you can also soften and accept that a lot of your processes are just part of how you're wired. You can look at how you can work with them instead of against them. === RESOURCES === Please check out the information for RISE: The Live Retreat Experience HERE Support the show Want more? In this episode you'll learn: why when you're feeling pain after a life transition, grasping on to wanting things to be "all better" is only going to slow down your progress how you can be with both feelings of wishing things were the way they used to be AND seeing the gifts in your situation Why getting to a place of neutral thinking is a great goal as well as ways you can achieve it === Are you intrigued by neutral thinking? === ***Are you feeling stuck and want help moving forward? *** I created the FREE workshop, How to Create the Life You Want to help! She tells you that you're not smart enough to be successful and that you will never be smart enough until you're perfect. She makes you think there's no point in trying because you'll fail anyway. She's the one who pushes you to make self-sabotaging choices like eating, drinking, or spending too much. She is NOT the one giving you high fives, helping you celebrate your small wins. She's the one telling you not to enjoy your success because you could have done it better. She's not the one cheering you on from the sidelines, telling you that you can do whatever you put your mind to. She is not unstoppable. She does not make you unstoppable. And she is certainly not REAL. She is not YOU. She's just a fearful voice. Today, I'm teaching you all about inner mean girl, how and why she shows up, and how to quiet her down. ================= === RESOURCES === ================= --- 1:1 Coaching - I have a few spots open starting in April! --- Click HERE to email me and schedule a free consultation call to learn more. --- Download Free Journal Prompts! --- Sometimes you just need some ideas to help you get started journaling. Send us a text Episode 41: How to Feel Your Feelings Sometimes, the last thing we want to do is feel our feelings. They can be downright uncomfortable. They can hurt. Today, I'm talking about why feeling your feelings and letting them move through you is SO important. Every feeling has a message. Sometimes that message is to just sit with the feeling until it dissipates. Sometimes, the message is guiding you toward taking action. Listen to the episode to learn all about feelings and emotions and how to start the work of learning how to process them rather than shove them down. === RESOURCES === I have TWO spots open for 1:1 coaching! Send us a text Episode 40 Today, I'm talking about the quote "How we do one thing is how we do everything". What this means is that the beliefs we have in one area of our life tend to be similar in all areas of our life, causing us to repeat similar patterns across all of those areas. So, it's important to check the stories and beliefs you have, as well as the belief in YOURSELF and your ability to make changes in your life. It's also important to know that in order to make changes, you need to BELIEVE that you can achieve those results BEFORE you have any evidence that you can. As well, you'll need to work toward becoming the person who has already achieved his/her result. You'll need to think, act and believe like the person who has already had that transformation. This all comes back to paying attention to your beliefs and patterns and knowing that they are likely showing up in multiple areas. This is why coaching is so helpful. We all have blind spots that we just can't see ourselves. As a coach, it's my job to point those out to my clients. It's also my job to hold the belief that they can achieve the result they're after until they can believe it themselves. It's transformational and life-changing work. === Resources === Schedule a consult! Learn how coaching can help you get the results you haven't been able to get on your own. Send us a text In this episode, I talk about the danger of getting comfortable with the word "normal". Our idea of normal is what we're comfortable with and is based on beliefs we've inherited from childhood and accumulated from society and the media as we've grown up. When we identify as "normal", we're excluding a huge group of other unique, amazing individuals from our world, and we're also excluded from other worlds when we're not considered normal. Start to notice how "normal" pops up in your world. How do you think it impacts your ability to relate to other people who are out of your usual circles? How do you feel excluded for not feeling "normal". Listen to this episode to learn more. Send us a text On this episode, I'm talking about the unattainable standards that perfectionists set for themselves and how this is approaching self-improvement from a place of "not enough" or scarcity rather than self-love. It's possible to love something and still want to change it - you don't have to keep a drill sergeant in your brain to "whip yourself into shape". Perfectionists tend to think if they lose their super-high standards, they'll make mistakes, fail, be judged, "let themselves go", get fat or get out of shape. Not so! Those are just thoughts your brain thinks and you can change those unhelpful thought patterns. Listen to this episode to learn how. ===Resources=== ***--Upcoming FREE ART JOURNALING WORKSHOP--*** Join me and special guest, artist Mary Ann Rivard, and learn the basics of art journaling and how you can use this method of journaling to relax and overcome your perfectionist tendencies. Send us a text Episode 36 In this episode of Real, Brave & Unstoppable, I talk about how changing your thoughts can create better outcomes or results in your life. When you experience something, it's a circumstance - a fact. Our brain then assigns it a meaning. We think something about it. Our thought causes an emotion, which causes us to act a certain way. The way we act determines our outcome. If your thoughts are getting in your way, the good news is that you can change them. You can decide what you want to think, on purpose. This takes some practice, of course, but you can learn all about it in this episode. --- Resources --- Free 20-minute Mini Session Hop on a call with me and I'll help you with a thought that's not serving you. Send us a text Episode 34: We're faced with many "forks in our paths" in our lifetimes. Sometimes we choose a path that feels like the "right" choice, and sometimes we choose one that's more difficult. In this episode, I talk about a recent hiking experience where I reached a fork in the trail. But I didn't stop to take in all of the information so I'd know which way was the right way. I didn't have cell signal, so I couldn't tell where I was on the trail so I took a wrong turn. My instinct told me to go one way, but my instinct was wrong. This is a lesson that can be applied to life. First, it's good to stop and think before making decisions. Second, it's helpful to have a compass or something to guide you - your values. And finally, if you do end up taking a wrong turn, it's not the end of the world. You'll grow and learn from the lessons the "wrong way" provides. ====== Resources ====== --- Goals Challenge (sign up to get free workbook with values exercise and more) --- If you're listening at a date later than 1/15/2021, email me at kortney@kortneyrivard.com if you'd like me to send you the goal-setting workbook, which includes the values excercise I refer to in the episode. --- Schedule a free mini session ( We'll tackle a specific problem you'd like some support with) Support the show Want more? Send us a text Episode 32: Goals and Creating YOUR 2021 Experience It's almost here! The new year. 2021. A fresh start, a clean slate! In today's episode, I talk about setting goals in the new year. Not your ordinary goal-setting process. Often, people set goals that are kind of random and sound great, but they aren't really aligned with what's important to them. So, they lose interest and don't follow through. In my approach, we dig into some questions that are heart-centered - questions like: What do you want more of this year? What do you want less of? What's important to you and why? How do you want to FEEL in 2021? What if 2021 isn't better on the outside? How can you create a good experience for yourself so that every day has some good in it? I also announced my upcoming challenge, UNLEASH 2021: Goals, Dreams & Intentions. It's free! Send us a text Episode #31: Believing in Magic My daughter just turned 11. In the past year, she learned the tooth fairy isn't real, and I'm pretty sure she knows the truth about Santa. She's asking a lot of questions! The other night, I was trying to ask questions that would help me figure out FOR SURE if she still believed or not. She won't say, but I'm still pretty sure she doesn't. But, I started wondering how the heck I was going to explain perpetuating this myth over her 11 years of life. I remembered a letter a mom posted online several years ago sharing what she had told her children about Santa. It was beautiful. It talked about how they (mom and dad) were the ones that put presents under the tree, but no, they were not Santa. No one person is Santa. The letter talked about how Santa is so much more than a big guy in a red suit with flying reindeer. He is a symbol of the true spirit of Christmas - of love, kindness and giving. Santa teaches kids to believe in something they can't see, which is something that we all need throughout our lifetimes. Believing in Santa teaches us how to believe in the magic of Christmas. We are all Santa, and we keep that spirit alive and spread it this time of year. This episode talks about how to find the magic of the season again. After all, as adults, we lose our ability to believe in, or even feel, magic. And even more than believing in magic during the holidays, how can you find magic in our every day life? This episode talks about 4 ways you can cultivate magic in your own life. Send us a text This week on Real, Brave & Unstoppable, I talk about a different way to look at your progress. It's a marathon, not a sprint! Each day you are becoming a different person - closer and closer to the future self who has achieved your goal. It's easy to forget that a little progress each day adds up to BIG results. Don't forget that progress does not get made in a linear fashion. In other words, a straight line from point A to point B is not how this works! Think about a curvy path. Progress happens like that. You might have to loop back toward where you came from for a bit before you can head back in the right direction. And that's not a bad thing! It's really important to remember that as cliche as it sounds, this is really about the journey , not the destination. You'll reach your goal, and there will always be more goals and more growth. So enjoy your path - enjoy and have gratitude for the learning and the growing. You'll reach your goal soon enough! Send us a text This episode is all about gratitude. Why it works, and how to practice it. I always tell the story about how my mom gave me a gratitude journal a long time ago when I was going through a hard time. The journal had a space to write down five things I was grateful for each day. At the time, I rolled my eyes and thought there was no way that simply writing down a few things I was thankful for would help me feel better. I did it, albeit half-assed, now and again when I was feeling down, wishing things were better. I didn't really notice a difference because I didn't stick with it. When I was going through my divorce, I turned to gratitude out of desperation. I started to focus my attention on the good I could find in my life, and sometimes it was hard to find even one thing. I always had my kids, so I always had one thing, but sometimes the other two things were hard for me to find. But I kept at it. And one day, I thought about it and realized that my default mindset was really one of gratitude. It WORKED! Today, I credit my happiness in part to gratitude. Send us a text Pema Chodron is a Buddhist nun and one of my very favorite authors. She teaches about meditation and the lessons of Buddhism in a very down-to-earth way that shows how these teachings can apply to our modern, everyday lives. She writes a lot about getting comfortable with uncertainty and the concept of impermanence. Nothing is permanent - not the bad OR the good. That's why we need to learn to live in the moment. This moment is all we know for certain. Send us a text There are a lot of folks out there that aren't familiar with what life coaches REALLY do. For a while, coaching has been viewed as some kind of fluffy, woo-woo profession that isn't a necessity. Well, that is SO not the case, and I'm here to talk to you about what life coaches really do and how coaching can change your life. I hired my own coach to help me figure out what I wanted to do with my life after my divorce. I was overwhelmed and knew I had to figure it out, but I had no idea where to start. My coach helped me dig in and get to know myself so I could tease apart what it was I wanted in life and with her help, I also found the confidence in myself to go after it. Coaches help people reach goals, yes. But we also do things like: help you identify limiting beliefs and stories - ones that hold you back tolerate vulnerability and embrace authenticity so you can live a life full of meaningful connection guide you on your journey to a better body image or self-image... otherwise known as self-love deal with overwhelm unpack emotions and obstacles that are holding you back from reaching your goals help you develop more confidence identify your fear patterns - how fear shows up for you and how you react - so you can take steps to overcome your fears and get in the habit of "going for it" help you get honest with yourself about what isn't working for you in your life right now figuring out what you need to live a life you're excited about Go after your dreams, even when it's scary These are just a few things I help my own clients with, and there are many more! Send us a text Are you a control freak? Control shows up in so many areas of life. Relationships, finances, parenting, work, and even your living space. Control is rooted in fear - fear of failing, fear of losing something, fear of being betrayed, being alone, fear of looking stupid, etc, etc. Fear of uncertainty is also a big one for many people. This time of the year can be a time that people really start to feel like they need to control things. And the need for control is a cycle. Micromanaging or controlling gives you some temporary relief, but since you can't ACTUALLY control the outcome of something, you'll need to go right back to controlling to feel that relief again. Send us a text How many self-help books have you read? How many courses and workshops have you taken? If you're like me, and a very, very, large portion of the population, your answer is likely a lot. Have you ever noticed that no matter how much you read though, nothing really changes? You might glean some really great nuggets from a book, but that book that advertises you can change your life in "3 simple steps" doesn't really pan out for you. Why IS that? Listen to this week's episode about self-help, and while it can be really good, it's worthless if you don't actually take action. Send us a text Lots of people love to run, but even if you don't, you'll get a lot out of this episode! Listen as I share some things I've learned from one of my favorite activities - running. I've learned that just like a long run, life has ups and downs. Neither the ups nor the downs last forever, and the downs make us stronger. I've learned that the proper shoes are essential to supporting me and absorbing the impact of my feet hitting the ground, just like having the proper support in life is important for getting through the journey in one piece. I've learned that sometimes it's easier to run with a group as opposed to solo. Find your tribe and lean on them. I've learned that sometimes half the battle is just putting your shoes on. And taking the first steps. I've learned that you can always take one more step and that often times it's your mind that tries to stop you. I've learned that pacing yourself is important and I've learned to lean on coaches and mentors so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. There are some other things I've learned as well. Tune into the episode to get the whole list. Resources Is your mindset holding you back from a life you're excited about? Take this quiz to find out! New program for new clients! Unf*@! Real, Brave & Unstoppable

Send us a text As a mom, I know I've thrown myself into my job to the point where I have no time for myself at times. I know it's a common thing! In today's episode, I talk with Kayleen Johnson, who grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in a very conservative farming community. Growing up, she was taught that her sole purpose in life was to be a wife and a mother. Kayleen reached a point in her life where she struggled with this idea of having no worth outside of her roles. She felt out of alignment because it wasn't her truth to hide her gifts and all she has to offer from the world. In 2016 Kayleen went through a life-threatening illness and it was a catalyst for her to start questioning - the limiting beliefs she had been taught, the identity she was told she should have, even her faith. She found the strength to get through that ordeal and find that she did have worth not only outside of being a mom and a wife but in addition to. Kayleen was always taught that feminism was bad, but after she recovered from her illness, she began reading books written by women and discovered that she had a good bit of feminism in her! She started to explore outside of the world she had been living for so long. Kayleen is the host of a podcast called Scars we Share . She asks her guests three questions: 1) what is an external scar they have, 2) what is an internal scar they have that they're willing to talk about and 3) how they overcame that experience. She is also the author of The Empress Journal: A Journal Positively for Women , a 13-week journal for practicing gratitude, affirmations, and setting and reaching goals. You can download a free pdf that contains the first 4 weeks of the journal here: EMPRESS JOURNAL PDF DOWNLOAD About Kayleen: Kayleen has a passion for people. She loves quickly and whole-heartedly. She has a BA in Theatre Arts Studies from Brigham Young University. People and their stories have always been important to her, which is part of the reason she started the podcast Scars We Share. Her husband and three young children bring her immense joy. As does being outside, windy days, good food, and good conversation. Send us a text Life isn't meant to be rainbows and unicorns all the time. We can't know happiness without sadness, right? Sometimes, life ticks along and everything feels like its firing on all cylinders, things are clicking and feeling good! And then sometimes... well... it just doesn't. What do we do when we lose our mojo? What do we do when we feel like things are just not clicking and we feel like our mindset is in the toilet? A few things. We tell ourselves that nothing is permanent. The amazing times don't last and neither do the crappy ones. So we lean in and feel the discomfort. We feel the feelings and know that they won't last. We get up and do the things we aren't really excited about doing, like get off the couch when we feel like sleeping. Like having a difficult conversation or being seen when we're afraid. We also work on our mindset through thought work. We journal about our feelings. We take care of ourselves by getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, moving and doing nice things for ourselves like take baths, read books, listen to calming music. We treat ourselves like we'd treat someone that we love - nurturing ourselves as we climb out of this valley and onto the next peak. Life ebbs and flows; waxes and wanes. That is the nature of life. Send us a text Capital-S Stories. Everyone has them. Capital-S Stories are internal narratives and assumptions that we make about things, ourselves, or how the world operates. But they may not be true - they're really just the lens you see through. Capital-S Stories can be helpful, but it's the ones that are limiting that I'm focusing on today. The ones that keep you from being unstoppable. Some examples of Capital-S Stories: I'm not an athlete. I could never do a marathon Good moms do things a certain way - the self-sacrificing way I'm not good enough or smart enough It's not ok to make mistakes It's my job to make sure everyone is happy I have to work harder - it's not good enough yet There's no point in trying, things never seem to work out for me anyway Committing to one thing means I'll be tied down The good news is that you can change your Stories! Listen to this episode to learn how. Resources Noticing your Capital-S Stories, but having a hard time questioning and reframing them? Remember, those Stories could likely be holding you back from the life you dream of - a life that you are excited to wake up to. Send us a text When it comes to going after goals and dreams, sometimes we get a little bit ahead of ourselves and get frustrated when we aren't as far along as we'd like to be. We have a couple of choices: First, we can beat ourselves up for being inadequate, or not as far along as we think we "should" be. OR We can meet ourselves where we're at, accept our current place on the path and take the next right steps to continue making progress on the journey to reaching our goal or dream. The second option is so much better, isn't it? Listen to this episode for some ideas on how you can meet yourself where you're at with compassion. Send us a text Do you have back to school stress? No doubt about it, school is DIFFERENT this year! A lot of us are pretty stressed. How are we going to juggle the schedule if we work? Will the kids learn enough? How am I going to keep my child engaged in front of a computer screen for 6 hours a day? If I"m sending them back in person, will they get sick? Will the school disinfect properly? How will they make the kids keep their masks on? There is a lot of uncertainty around how this is going to go. Uncertainty brings doubt and doubt brings fear. Send us a text In this week's episode, I talk about my Grandpa, who passed away last December. He was my hero and a role model of the way I appreciate life as I grow old. My Grandpa was able to find amazement and wonder in everything in life. He was the most positive person I have ever known. It was his positivity and his appreciation for life that allowed him to live such a long, full life. My Grandpa used to say something that makes me smile every time I hear it. When he was amazed at something (which was often), he would say "Wow! Just WOW!". In this episode, I talk about how looking at your world from the perspective of WOW can help you really start to feel better about your life - similar to a gratitude practice.
