A secret field that summons lightning. A massive spiral that disappears into a salt lake. A celestial observatory carved into a volcano. Meet the wild—and sometimes explosive—world of land art, where artists craft masterpieces with dynamite and bulldozers. In our Season 2 premiere, guest Dylan Thuras, cofounder of Atlas Obscura, takes us off road and into the minds of the artists who literally reshaped parts of the Southwest. These works aren’t meant to be easy to reach—or to explain—but they just might change how you see the world. Land art you’ll visit in this episode: - Double Negative and City by Michael Heizer (Garden Valley, Nevada) - Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson (Great Salt Lake, Utah) - Sun Tunnels by Nancy Holt (Great Basin Desert, Utah) - Lightning Field by Walter De Maria (Catron County, New Mexico) - Roden Crater by James Turrell (Painted Desert, Arizona) Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.…

Talking with Rachel Belmont is an absolute pleasure. Her journey through the sport of running has not been an easy one. There have been injuries, set backs, depression, and many shifts of goals along the way. Now, she is an avid runner, but at one time, she never thought she would be able to run again. Recently, she ran 100 miles on a the treadmill in order to raise money for a company that she loves supporting. This episode is filled with so much passion about the sport and all it has to offer. Thank you so much Rachel for spending some time with me to share your story! - Follow her on Instagram: @_skyrunr_ - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

I was humble when I was able to sit down with Cam Mayfield for a little bit and discuss her journey through endurance events. It’s been an amazing journey for her. Completing Western States (@wser) a twice and bettering her time by over an hour isn’t easy. But she managed to not only do this, but also run a fast race at the Olympic trials this year. - Pictures are from: Andrew McGuire, Myke Hermsmeyer, and Jesse Ellis with Let’s Wander Photography. - Cam’s Sponsors include: GU Energy Labs, Brooks Running, Squirrels Nut Butter, and Ultimate Direction. - Follow Cam: IG: @cameliamayfield…

I sat down and chatted with Michael “Gagz” about his recent run around the city of Philadelphia. He has named this run the Philly Four Corners. To say he loves the city is an understatement. Going into the 2019 Marine Corps Marathon, Brittany Charboneau was primed and ready to break the almost 20-year course record set back in 1990. She felt like nothing could rattle her after she had her best training season yet thanks to incorporating weekly creative themes, art and trail running. A little rain can't ruin a parade, but a lot of rain can certainly have an effect on attempting a course record. This year's race was an epically wet one and one that sent some glitches in Brittany's game plan. While she did win the race as the first overall female, she didn't break the course record (this year). The key importance, however, is that she walked away with invaluable learnings as she heads into her next season preparing for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in February 2020. Brittany is looking forward to continuing her themes and art and adding a focus on visualization and belief. She is thankful to have friends at debour wetsuits for helping her with a wetsuit. After so long in the pool, she began to get cold. One nap and 53 hours later she was done with the swim and her T1 Time was nearly 12 hours!!! She said she PR’d it. Was a very interesting race for me. With the swim being cancelled I was pretty bummed because it gives me an overall advantage over a lot of the fast bikers and runners. My biggest focus going into this race was not to over bike. I made mistakes at IMWI and I didn't want to repeat. I biked controlled and consistent. This was Jana’s 7th and 6th consecutive race in Kona, and it finally all came together. She had an average swim, but one where she felt strong throughout, and when her feet hit the ground in transition she was ready to go. She executed the best bike she ever had, and was able to get stronger throughout the ride. The goal was to ride like Daniela Ryf always does, making my move coming down from Hawi, and the last 30 miles heading back into town and she was able to do that and was really feeling stronger than ever. Coming off the bike, her legs still felt fresh and ready to run even if the run training lead up wasn't ideal due to knee niggles. Starting out, the goals was to control running by heart rate, and power, and focused on getting to the top of Palani hill feeling in control. She did have some low moments going in and coming out of the energy lab, but was able to turn it around, and finish strong! Making pass for 1st place at mile 22 is something she will never forget. It was that pass that gave her new energy she didn't know she had! She has dreamt of winning this race since 2012, so this was a dream come true for Jana and it's hard to explain just how amazing it was. - Weather that day: 70-86 Water Temperature: 80ish Age Group: F35-39 Height: 5'8" Weight: 126 Calories per hour: 90g of carbs per hour on the bike Nutrition Company used: Levelen, Clif, Honey Stinger, SiS, Salt Stick Depth of Wheels: Irwin Cycling 60/88 combo PSI for this course: 80 Bike Elevation Gain: 5814 Run Elevation Gain: 1009 Swim: 1:16:02 T1: 3:17 Bike: 4:58:41 T2: 3:53 Run: 3:33:52 Total Race Time: 9:55:45 Gender Rank: 11th Amateur, 40th with pro's Division Rank: 1 Overall Rank: 491st - Follow Jana, IG: @czechchick15 Website: www.e3ts.com - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

Big’s Backyard Ultra is a grueling race that asks runners to perform constant lap after constant lap without faltering. After four years of tackling the race, Andy has learned the tips and strategies and watched where other failed and succeeded. He put that together for a mostly perfectly executed race for the first 24 hours until he suffered a debilitating Achilles injury that ground his race to a halt within a few pained hours. Tamara could not have had a better race to end the season and celebrate 8 years cancer free. Tamara and her coach put together a great race plan that she executed very well. The heat was brutal and race execution was the key along with mental preparation. In the end race planning and mental prep earned her an 18 minute PR. - Weather that day: 97 Water Temperature: 76.7 Age Group: F45-50 Height: 5'6" Weight: 142 Calories per hour: 200 Nutrition Company used: Multiple (stinger mostly and a good old PBJ) Depth of Wheels: PSI for this course: 110 Bike Elevation Gain: 1654367 Run Elevation Gain: 26 Swim: 43:09:00 T1: 3:56 Bike: 3:14:53 T2: 3:22 Run: 2:30:48 Total Race Time: 6:36:06 Gender Rank: 367 Division Rank: 71 Overall Rank: 1353 - Follow Tamara, Instagram: @ttoth07 - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

To say I’m excited to see this happen is an understatement. I was there in Louisville last year where Sam placed Second overall. I was able to be there in Chattanooga this year to see him take the tape and get his slot for Kona. He threw down some amazing times and played it smart. We talk about his race day tactics, strategies, and how he felt overall. It was a hot day in Chattanooga and this place feels like home. Not only did he win the 70.3 there but now the full. We talk about all the details of both in this episode. Best of luck this winter Sam, and all the love brother. Deirdre raced at Powerman Zofingen as part of Team Ireland (her home country, though she is based in California). This was a bucket list race for her as swimming is the weakest of her triathlon disciplines and she loves longer races - the hillier and harder the better. Afterwards her assessment was that Powerman is the most difficult multisport event she has done, mostly due to the combination of the two difficult runs and the climbing on the bike. Stacked on that was the challenge of the bad weather this year. Tougher than Kona? Quite possibly. Despite some poor transitions which cost her second place AG, she was delighted with the execution of her race and her result on the day. - Weather that day: 50 Water Temperature: 0 Age Group: F40-44 Height: 5'3" Weight: 125 Calories per hour: 300 Nutrition Company used: Skratch and Honey Stinger Depth of Wheels: Hed (Disk back), 60mm front PSI for this course: 85 Bike Elevation Gain: 6,000ft Run Elevation Gain: 1200ft T1: 3:13 Bike: 4:59 T2: 4:14 Run: 2:32:01 Total Race Time: 8:27 Division Rank: 3 Overall Rank: 13 - Follow Deidre, Instagram: @deehasit - Sponsors: Team Zoot 2019 - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

Bobby Campos had an amazing not only 2nd half Ironman but 2nd triathlon. Though his schedule was unorthodox and at times required training with almost no sleep, he embraced the suck and kept pushing through each and ever workout. Bobby may not have enjoyed every workout but it would pay off. On race day the conditions where far from perfect. Bobby started the day with some bubble guts that kept him racing to the porter potty’s. Then an hour delayed start, down pouring rain on the bike with crashes and flat all over the course and finally a break in the weather just in time for a hot run. Bobby didn’t allow any of this to penetrate his mind and just stuck to what his coaches Ray and Danielle Gogarty (The RaD Fam) told him to do. All of this would lead to him crossing the finish line where his saint of a girlfriend would show him the time that almost put tears in his eyes. - Weather that day: 85 Water Temperature: 73.9 Age Group: M25-29 Height: 5’7” Weight: 175 Calories per hour: 448 Nutrition Company used: Infinite Depth of Wheels: Basic stock rims PSI for this course: 100 Bike Elevation Gain: 725 Run Elevation Gain: 354 Swim: 37:12:00 T1: 6:47 Bike: 2:42:55 T2: 6:21 Run: 1:51:14 Total Race Time: 5:24:27 Gender Rank: 306 out of 1461 Division Rank: 30 out of 165 Overall Rank: 348 out of 2037 - Follow Bobby on Instagram: @Path2iron - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

311 - IRONMAN© 70.3 World Championships – Kyra Wiens Professional - Returning to Ironman 70.3 World Championships for the second year in a row was a huge honor and a wonderful affirmation of the work I've put in since going pro. What's really stood out to me this year is how connected we are in the triathlon community; it may look in my race pictures like I'm alone out there, but the reality is I have training partners, family, sponsors, coaches, and so many other people that enable me to do what I do. I'm grateful for every finish chute, this one in particular because qualifying is a huge honor and because I was so sick going in that I wasn't sure even on day of if I would race. The bike course is certainly challenging, but I'm happy to see Ironman supporting a venue that feels more organic and authentic than some of the courses where athletes are on a closed off highway. I can also attest that the water in Nice is really as blue and beautiful as the pictures show. Appreciative to race with so many friends and to make new ones. - Weather that day: 70 Water Temperature: 75.2 Age Group: PRO Height: 5'10" Weight: 140 Calories per hour: 250 Nutrition Company used: F2C Nutrition Depth of Wheels: Zipp Firecrest PSI for this course: 95 Bike Elevation Gain: 4485 ft Run Elevation Gain: 82 Swim:30:18 T1: 3:02 Bike: 3:09:10 T2: 1:48 Run: 1:32:30 Total Race Time: 5:16:46 - Gender Rank: 42 Division Rank: 42 - Follow Kyra, Facebook: Kyra Wiens Instagram: @KyraWiens - Sponsors: F2C Nutrition Tri Sirena Blue Seventy Dynamo Multisport - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

Bonnie is pretty amazing and she does some amazing things from time to time. Recently she completed IRONMAN© Boulder, the sunset year for that race, and now she did IRONMAN© Lake Placid. We talk about what it was like for her to be on camera there as she was part of something special that was kind of hidden from the public until the live footage of the race aired. The logistics for this race are certainly worth paying attention to if you’re not from the area as this is harder to get to and can be difficult to manage. I was honored to host and record an episode with Zach recently. This is such a powerful episode. I reached out to Zach after finding out he completed the full distance triathlon in Lake Placid. Zach’s life changed on November 9, 2010 when he was in Afghanistan and IED explosion left him with no legs and missing fingers. This is quite remarkable that he lived through this IED explosion. I, myself, have been blown up by IEDs also in Afghanistan, but I was mounted in a vehicle, not on foot like Zach. Zach is a true hero. We talk about his story and the race at Placid. The most important thing I took away from this conversation is the great amount of gratitude he has for life, others, and his ability to be alive. He had a team help him prepare for the race and completed the race as well. Thank you so much Zach for your time, and I can’t wait to see you out on the race course next year in Lubbock, Texas! - Weather that day: 55-79 Water: WSL - Division: HC Height: n/a Weight: 149 Calories per hour: 180 PSI for this course: n/a Bike Elevation Gain: 7,246ft Run Elevation Gain: 1,448ft Swim: 1:36:20 T1: 9:07 Bike: 7:36:35 T2: 11:01 Run: 3:06:08 Total Race Time: 12:39:08 - Gender Rank: 437 Division Rank: 1 Overall Rank: 517 - Follow Zach, Instagram: @nubz0311 - Sponsors: Semper Fi Fund Independence Fund - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast…

This is a long episode. But this is about an ultra-marathon that is among one of the most notorious in the world. Vermont’s 100 is an established race that has been around for years. Boasting an incredible 17,000 feet of gain over the course of the 100 miles journey it takes runners on it is also among the toughest. While this is already a tough race, Faith and her friends raced the race on one of the hottest weekends of the year. This race took place on the same weekend as the NYC Triathlon that was cancelled due to the heat. I’ve only seen a few folks have the grit, determination, and admiration for racing and training that these two athletes have. This episode is long, but man is it worth it. I don’t like going over an hour, much less two. But this is so worth it. You’ll get to hear two athletes who not only love the sport, but each other. I can’t help but to compliment them on how much they love each other. It is contagious. We talk about their race in Ireland and how that day was far from perfect, but also skin cancer. This is real and raw. Melanoma is real and endurance athletes are out in the sun more than most folks. Wear sunscreen. Kayla if an amazing athlete and has been to Kona twice. We talk about what it’s like to have an extreme eating disorder and then channeling positive energy into a solid work ethic. This course is such fun and in years past it’s been even colder water. Some highlights from this interview is how she doesn’t let pregnancy change her but how she adapts and changes with the pregnancy. She’s not a delicate flower and no one that is pregnant should be thought to be one either. This was her fourth triathlon this season she competed in being pregnant. Others were: Texas 70.3 (8weeks), St. George 70.3 (12 weeks), Chattanooga 70.3 (14 weeks), and this one at 19 weeks. We talk about some of the good things she did along with some mistakes she made on race morning. Most folks I talk with about their races travel with their bikes, but not all of them. Leslie rented a bike locally and we discuss the details surrounding the rental situation and how that works. Some of the most obvious things we talk about is the shirt this year and how someone didn’t proofread things entirely as well as the famous boat ride to the starting point in the middle of the bay by Alcatraz. One of the biggest things we talk about is what made her give up the Vegan lifestyle and start eating meat again! This is a must for anyone looking for information on what it’s like to be vegan then go back to meat as well as her reasoning and how her body felt before, during, and after. 278 - IRONMAN© Santa Rosa – Matt Fitzgerald - Matt needs no introduction as he has written countless books on endurance running, triathlons, mindset, and even finding your best Race Weight. I am grateful for the change to talk with Matt about his race at Santa Rosa this year. The way he deals with adversity during the race and the “Don’t Panic” attitude is something I personally made note. We talk about his new book, Life is a Marathon: A Memoir of Love and Endurance. Something most folks don’t know about Matt is that he is always learning from himself and he loves testing himself for others to see. I’ve been following Matt’s blog for a while now and I believe we could all learn something just by following him. Near the end we talk about the kamikaze marathon and what it means to do this in a race. His definition of perfection in a race is something that even after 260 plus interviews I haven’t heard yet. I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Have you ever had issues during a race? If you haven’t this episode is for you. Preston and I talk about his race at the 70.3 in St. George, Utah where he had some derailer issues on the bike. If you know this course, you know it’s a course where you need the ability to change gears to go up Snow Canyon. Going into the race, he had some nerve issues that didn’t allow him to race like he had wanted to. Packet pick up here is amazing and this race is like a well-oiled machine in terms of the experience for the athletes. He also gives us some tips on how to run up hills from a technique perspective. Thank you so much for coming on the show Preston, good luck in Ireland in a few weeks! - Weather that day: 61 - 90 Water: 62 - Age Group: M30-34 Height: 5’10 Weight: 163lbs Calories per hour: 320-350 PSI for this course: 88R/85F Depth of Wheels: Disc/404 Bike Elevation Gain: 3,236ft Run Elevation Gain: 1,267ft Swim: 43:08 T1: 3:34 Bike: 2:49:39 T2: 3:37 Run: 2:00:37 Total Race Time: 5:40:35 - Gender Rank: 584 Division Rank: 89 Overall Rank: 727 - Follow Preston, Facebook: Preston Hernandez Instagram: @phernandez_tri - Follow Coach Terry: Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcast Facebook: www.facebook.com/CoachTerryWilson Website: www.CoachTerryWilson.com…

Buckle up and hang on for this interview. At the time I talked with Meredith she was still a Streaker (running at least one mile per day) and she did this through her training and traveling. I’ve had her sister on a few times, Jocelyn, but hearing from Meredith is much more relatable as mere age groupers listen as well. We talk about how she only uses Heart Rate on the run, as well as some of the details of what it’s like to be on beta blockers during training for a 70.3. One of the biggest things people should be aware of is the time change from Vegas to St. George, some people forget. I really enjoyed this conversation and hearing her perspective and excitement makes me almost want to do this race next year. Almost. In this episode I talk with Brandi about not only her race experience in Cancun, but also the journey to achieve her professional license. Some of the fun stuff we talk about along the way is how being a Mom, her training, and meal prep as well. She also was able to meet one of my favorite athletes I’ve had on the show as well while she was down Cancun, VT! Her season recently took a positive swing in a new direction which means that she will not be going racing this weekend at the Challenge Championship in Slovakia. I sit down with Chris Schroeder about his race at the inaugural Challenge Cancun. This was a solid race from Chris and we discuss how it feels to have fun with friends, catch up, and really race the race with the lead pack. This venue is fun, fast, but it’s also very hot. Even though this was the first year of the race, this was a solid effort of the city to put on a great race for a small 70.3 distance event. No more than 350 athletes toed the start line this year. It is my hope it grows. I’ve been following Yean for a few years now. Yean is a talented athlete, but before he’s an athlete, he’s a father. He loves his kids and more than that he loves setting the example for them. Yes, Yean is a fast runner, and we talk about how he trained for such a fast run of the Boston Marathon. While it’s a fast race, a personal record, and a very respectable time, Yean is one of the most humble and gracious people. This is evident by the video he posted right after the race with tears in his eyes thanking everyone that has followed him. In this episode I conclude the 2019 Texas 70.3 series. I talk with another athlete who was unable to finish the race. Tiffany is such a humble and gracious person overall. We talk about how she trained and raced, but also how the weather turned and how this impacted her emotionally as well. She was on the bike when the storm hit, and this alone is enough to scare most people. This storm was large enough to actually cancel the race and not allow nearly 85% of the field to finish. Family is very important to Tiffany and her husband and the way that she looks forward it is very evident that she has the mental strength to face nearly anything put in front of her. I have plenty of episodes to put out soon, so stay tuned! Sam is doing well, and in this episode we talk about how a crash two weeks out from his race allows him to refocus and recharge going into St. George. He also has some amazing workouts that he did going into St. George and we discuss how his training discipline is high and how the DNF at Oceanside ignited a fire that left him hungry and ready to push hard for the remainder of the season.
