That Marketing Dude was founded by me, Luke Benjamin Thomas, a world traveler, digital nomad and motor mouth. I help digital nomads and location independent entrepreneurs, and those aspiring to become either, to build businesses that allow them to focus more on travel.
I started this podcast because I was sick of listening to the same type of shows... So I created something different. I bring on guests as "co-hosts", not to interrogate them. I publish 3 shows a month talking about a specific topic related to business or travel and 1 episode a month purely on travel stories.
With inspiration from people like; Pat Flynn and Smart Passive Income, Chris Ducker at Youpreneur, John Lee Dumas for EOFire, Josh and Jill Stanton from Screw The Nine to Five, Tim Ferriss and his 4 Hour Work Week book AND of course sprinkle in some awesome travel stories like you see at Extra Pack of Peanuts and Zero To Travel... I think I've created a rather unique show!

What's up Dudes and Dudettes! Episode 4 is here and it's with my new friend Amy Schwartz and we're diving into some of her crazy adventures as an avid traveller! Amy is the loyal but mischievous friend who convinced you to go nightswimming, sing in math class, eat too many mangoes, tell the whole truth, start the dance floor, stand up for justice, show some love and take the plane rather than the job. Her secret-not-secret passion is finding herself at home everywhere: from a 43 ft sailboat en route from Cape-Town to Florida, to the local matriarch’s front lawn on Easter Island, a first-edition VW bus in Argentine Patagonia, a raft on the Karnali river in Nepal, a bike in the Peruvian Amazon, a makeshift mat in an ‘untouchables’ village in Madhya Pradesh, her hammock-tent on a Mozambiqe beach, and next to more surf-breaks than she cares to admit to. Before launching Unleash - a remote-working experience for surfers with wanderlust, Amy was a specialist in creating healthy and active places that you’d like to linger in, developing government policy for community-led sustainable energy and guiding outdoor adventure tours. She’s gotten accolades as an Agent of Change by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce and as a top 50 Under-40 entrepreneurial leader by 21inc. Amy sent me a huge list of potential stories we could have talked about and it was a huge task to condense it all down to just 30-40 minutes! I think Amy will need to make a re-appearance! Let me know in the comments down below if we inspired you to travel to any place in particular! Enjoy! *fist bump* IN THIS EPISODE WE COVER: - Hitchhiking through Patagonia, Argentina... And the weird guy who picked Amy and her friend up. - The place to visiting in Brazil if you want to experience the carnaval... 1 Building Relationships With People On The Road For Both Business and Pleasure with Michelle Weinstein 39:37
In today's episode, Michelle Weinstein and I talk about Building Relationships With People On The Road For Both Business and Pleasure. Michelle has some high profile clients (like NFL teams) she's managed to land thanks to her ability to build relationships with people. So we'll be diving into how you can do the same for your business and for your general travels for the first time. Michelle has knocked down the doors and impressed CEO’s at many billion dollar companies. Her relentless pursuit towards buyers at Costco Wholesale earned her coveted shelf space that also led to national deals with The Vitamin Shoppe. Other current clients include the Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays. Within in her inner circle are multi-seven figure entrepreneurs, famous comedians, professional athletes and coaches from the NFL, NBA, MLB & NHL. As a result of these amazing relationships and opportunities Michelle has honed a unique skill set that will help you develop the most important and valuable relationships. She will teach you how to open doors and meet people that you have always dreamed of meeting, but you never knew how to get to. That’s her genius. She has accomplished incredible feats of influence, building a business both online and brick & mortar. She has sold everything from mortgages, to wardrobes at Nordstrom, to $30k online education programs, to 7-figure homes, to Paleo meatballs. She pitched her way on Shark Tank and raised over $1M for her last Company. She uses the same formula to make all these things happen and her goal is to take her 20 years of experience and help you overcome any obstacles to close more deals, work half the time, make double the money and work with the clients that you love to serve. Very impressive dudette!! We tackle the topic of building relationships for both business and for general friendships whilst we're on the road, especially seeing as there's a fair amount of overlap between the two. Michelle comes in from the business angle and I come in from the traveller's angle. Make sure you check out the episode in it's entirety and fire away any questions you may have down below! Enjoy dudes and dudettes! *fist bump* IN THIS EPISODE WE COVER: - How Michelle built her relationships - How Luke make friends on the road - How both of these can tie into each other - Tips for those of you doing this for the first time Show Note: https://TMDshow.com/S1E3 FB Community: http://DudeBrood.com…

1 TMD 033 : Getting Your Finances In Line and "Chasing Tiger Sharks In The Bahamas" with Kelly Christian 47:09
In today's episode, I have Kelly Christian on the show to talk about how to get your finances in line because let's be honest... How many of us keep proper track of our finances when we're travelling? Not many of us right? This is why I brought Kelly on the show! I asked Kelly for a quick bio and here's what she said: "I am a registered professional bookkeeper, trained in bookkeeping 20 years ago during my time at UVIC and Camosun College in Victoria, BC (it seems like just yesterday….). I am one of those financial “geeks” who actually like to find out the new tax rules each year and hunt through financial websites so I can learn new things every day. I know what you’re thinking, she must be nuts. I sometimes think that myself and my sons sure love to tell me what a nerd I am…" I've gotten to know Kelly a little bit through a little community I'm a part of, Screw The Nine To Five, and she's an awesome chick. She's a Canadian tax account but the things we talk about today are just some little tips and tricks on how you can get your finances under control so when the tax man does come a knocking... You'll be prepared! Enjoy this episode Dudes and Dudettes! *fist bump* Show notes: https://TMDshow.com/33 FB Community: http://DudeBrood.com…

In today's episode, I have Heath Armstrong on the show to talk about how he built an e-commerce business that allows him to travel around the world. He uses "online arbitrage" and a team of location independent people to run his business, to build a 6-figure a year business that he spends little time running himself. Heath has interviewed 100+ Creative Entrepreneurs (including NY Times best-selling authors, Hollywood directors, artists, musicians, digital nomads, travel junkies, and one dominatrix) all around the world to discover their secrets for freedom, happiness, and success with his podcast, The Artsy Now Show. He's an avid traveller some someone I get on really well with when we jump on Skype. This was an extremely interesting conversation for me... Heath and I jumped on a call before we hit record to plan out what we'd cover on the show, but we ended up going in a completely different direction. As you can tell from the beginning of our conversation we originally planned on talking about building a remote team, but really got stuck into talk about Amazon and this concept "online arbitrage." Heath really drops all the info here with how he got started and what he'd do differently if he went through it all again. He took some MASSIVE risks which he highly advices that you don't do. 1 TMD 029 : Why Video Is Awesome For Building An Audience and "Trying To Survive Stranded On An Island" with Erica Blair 53:39
In today's episode, I have Erica Blair on the show to talk about how video is a fantastic way to build your audience online. Erica has been on That Marketing Dude before with her post: When It Comes to Building an Audience, Video is King where she crushed it. I had to bring her back on to talk about this in more detail. Erica Blair is marketing strategist and personal branding coach who helps people transform their businesses through the power of social media and digital storytelling. She works with purpose-driven entrepreneurs to increase their influence and income, by both embracing their own personal narrative and strategically broadening their online visibility. Erica has been living the digital nomad lifestyle for a while and is perfect to bring on the show. We talk about all the different types of video you can create online and why you might want to create each time. I hope you enjoy the episode dudes and dudettes! IN THIS EPISODE WE COVER: - Video is great for building the Know, Like and Trust factor… Great for building rapport and getting your personality out there. There’s a lot of the same content out there but people are going to gravitate towards you because of your outlook on it and your personality… Both of which easily come across on video. - FB video, YouTube, Instagram Stories and Snapchat. - Barrier to entry? - Feeling comfortable making a video, in front of the camera. - Equipment needed. - Fear of looking stupid. - Introverts and extroverts - What’s the line of what I should be out there? 1 TMD 028 : Why DIVI Is Awesome For Building Your Website and "Mr Tang From Laos" with Cathy Topping 55:13
In today's episode, I have a fellow Brit, Cathy Topping from Your Web Toolkit, on the show to talking about DIY websites, but more specifically the DIVI theme from Elegant Themes. This is the theme I use to build this website and the theme Cathy uses for all of her clients. Cathy is a website and graphic designer, now helping entrepreneurs and small business owners to build and market their own websites. She will help you build a website quickly and easily, even if you’re terrified of technology. And my god she does it so well. I talk with people all the time who find it really difficult to get a website off the ground. If it's your first time, then it's not the easiest thing in the world to do... There is a pretty steep learning curve. I ended up messing around with WordPress for about a month and figured a lot of the basic stuff myself. Then add on trying to make your website look good AS WELL!! It can be a tough mission. Thankfully DIVI makes it a little easier with their beautiful drag and drop builder. Cathy and I talk about why you should also consider using DIVI for your website, whether you're a seasoned website builder or even if it's your first (I do suggest a 2nd theme option as well if DIVI seems a little daunting). So open up your ear holes my friends... Cathy and I bring the heat! Enjoy the episode Dudes and Dudettes! Show Notes: https://TMDshow.com/28 FB Community: http://DudeBrood.com…

1 TMD 027 : What Make’s Europe A Great Place To Travel and "A Passionate Winery Tour In Italian" with Lynne Nieman 52:43
In today's episode, I have Lynne Nieman from Wander Your Way on the show to talk about what makes Europe a great place to travel around if you've never been before! Lynne has done plenty of travelling around Europe... I've done zero... So we compliment each other nicely in this conversation! Lynne is a photographer and self-acclaimed travel junkie. Lynne started her company, Wander Your Way, to help people who wanted to travel around Europe do it on their turns, not the way some packaged holiday/vacation tells them to. Her love affair with Europe started in 2005 when she travelled around Southern Spain solo and now helps others develop their love affair too. Lynne has a lot of experience with Europe and I've heard 100's of people who LOVED backpacking around Europe, so I had to bring Lynne on the show because I'm sure plenty of you Dudes and Dudettes are intrigued as well. I've never been, well only to two small Spanish islands, so I can't talk about how great Europe really is. But Lynne can. So we discuss all of the important things you need to know about Europe... Costs, how easy is it to travel around, is it safe, how much should you see etc. Tune in right now to this episode if Europe is a continent you want to visit! Enjoy Dudes and Dudettes! 1 TMD 026 : The Mindset Shift Needed When Travelling With Your Business and "Sheep On The Roof and “Sheep Kids” in Morocco" w/ Caitlin Cardoza 53:13
In today's episode, I have Caitlin Cardoza on the show to talk about the mindset shift a lot of people need to make when heading on the road with their online business. Caitlin is a success mindset coach that combines comedy with personal development to help motivated, grab-life-by-the-ballers step into their optimal selves and live their most awesome lives. Her work has been featured on Huffington Post, Thought Catalog, ABC, CBS, NBC, and International Business Times. This episode was a lot of fun to record... Caitlin has an awesome personality that shines through her website, her facebook lives and on this podcast. So seeing Caitlin is a mindset coach I thought she was the perfect guest to bring onto the show to help discuss the importance of your mindset whilst on the road. Especially if this is your first time traveling with your online business, or you're about to hit the road, you really have switch things up. You're going to want to see all the cool stuff in the country or city that you're visiting, but you can't neglect your business. Which is the mistake I made on my first trip abroad! 1 TMD 025 : Writing To Engage And Inspire An Audience and "The 95-Year Old Albanian" with Joseph Kennedy 53:02
In today's episode, I have Joseph Kennedy on the show, an environmental copywriting consultant, to talk about how we can improve our own writing to really get our audience engaged and get them to take action. Joseph is helping his business grow, to make Content Pathway the ‘go-to’ for Environmental Copywriting. His role involves consulting, creating content strategies and producing copy that drives his partners up Google, expanding their audiences in the process. Content Pathway worked on some amazing projects in 2016, but Joseph knows that 2017 can be even better. I know I need to improve my copywriting, especially seeing as I don't LOVE writing in the first place. When I was down in Texas for Funnel Hacking Live in February, there was a presentation on copywriting that I really enjoyed that really showed me that copywriting isn't difficult AND that it's something everyone should learn. Joseph does a great job in this episode showing us some simple tips to improve our own copywriting. With everything that we dive into in this conversation you'll be able to take something away to improve your own writing! Enjoy this episode Dudes and Dudettes! On today's show, I have Jason Moore on the show for a fantastic travel stories episode where we end up trading several stories about making friends with locals... And feet. Jason Moore is the founder of Zero To Travel, and travel blog and podcast, and co-founder of Location Indie, a community for digital nomads. Jason has been travelling all over the world for several years spending the majority of his time in either Boulder, Colorado (his home town) or in Norway (his wife is Norwegian). Jason was gracious enough to come on today's episode to share some travel stories with us. I've been following Jason's podcast, Zero to Travel, for a little while and he was one of my inspirations for this podcast! Yes, the idea of incorporating travel stories into every episode and have episodes purely on travel stories was conjured up whilst I was listening to his show. We end up talking about MANY different things on this episode, but they mainly seemed to focus around why it's important to make friends with locals no matter where you're travelling too... And also feet. That was a little weird. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode Dudes and Dudettes! Show notes: https://TMDshow.com/24 FB Community: http://DudeBrood.com…

In today's episode, I have my good friend Faten Zardi on the show to talk about how she sets up her retreats. She's hosted her first retreat and already planning her second! Faten is an event planning consultant and founder of MERAKI Travels, specialized in "workations" and retreats for digital nomads and location independent professionals. She has the skill to create real connexions and bringing people together through her events. She doesn't like touristy destinations and that's what's make her events special. She's a passionate traveller, loves street art, eats dessert before the main course and enjoys life to the fullest! Faten has already put on one retreat and is in the process of putting together another. I thought it would be GREAT to bring her on to talk about this because this is something I would love to do myself as well! I know retreats are a big thing in the digital nomad space so if you're thinking of putting one on yourself, or even if you're just attending one, you'll get a good idea of the things you'll need to consider. Two of the big ones being: 1. Retreats need a theme 2. Plan AT LEAST 6 months ahead of time! I hope you enjoy this episode Dudes and Dudettes! *fist bump*…

I knew Dom from way back in the day when we were both working with affiliate websites and Dom's goal was to have 5 figure months. It's been great watching his journey. What's gotten Dom to the level of success he has right now is the team he's built in his business. So in this episode, we dive into how he's built that team. Enjoy the episode Dudes and Dudettes! 1 TMD 020 : How To Be Like Marmite In A Non-Native Tongue and “A Night Out In Spain When You Don’t Speak Spanish” with Kay Fabella 56:08
In today's episode, I have Kay Fabella on to talk about finding your voice and building an audience in a language you don't speak fluently. Kay moved to Spain without speaking the language all too well (which you can tell with her travel story at the end haha) but has built a strong business with the Spanish-speaking world. Kay Fabella is a storyteller and communications strategist. She helps business owners around the world develop a communication strategy to meaningfully connect with their audiences — and meet their business goals. Kay is also a world-recognized author, speaker, and trainer. A Los Angeles native, she’s built her dream business from Spain to help bring brands to life in English and Spanish. 1 TMD 019 : The First Two Weeks In Chiang Mai Thailand and "Alone On The Great Wall Of China" with Paul Lam 43:27
In this episode, I have Paul Lam from the Path Hunters podcast on the show to talk about his first two weeks in Chiang Mai Thailand... The largest digital nomad hotspot in the world. Paul is a fella I got to connect with inside a digital nomad community who turns out also lives in Toronto! However, he recently moved to Chiang Mai and when we recorded this episode he'd only been there for 2 weeks. I thought it would be PERFECT to have Paul come on the show and have travel stories episode where we can talk about his experiences in Chiang Mai so far. I also talk about my experiences packing everything up and heading to another country as well. I hope you enjoy this episode dudes and dudettes! 1 TMD 018 : How Safe Is Solo Travelling Really? And “A Soccer Game In Argentina” with Danielle Isbell 43:15
In today's episode, I have Danielle Isbell from Snaps, Scribbles and Suitcases on the show where we discuss how safe solo travelling really is. There's always this preconceived idea that travelling alone is dangerous, well we bust through that. Danielle is a digital marketer and photographer from Seattle, WA USA, and with her husband, they're are about to begin their digital nomad existence. Their goal is to be international for at least a year and to still have freedom of location when they return to the US. Solo travel can be very safe so long as you're sensible and use a little common sense. I know people who've spent 6 months travelling around Africa solo without issues... People who've stayed in the homes of complete strangers without trouble. Now I'm not saying there isn't danger out there in the world, but that it's just not as dangerous as you'd think Anyway dudes and dudettes, I hope you enjoy this episode! 1 TMD 017 : The Buzz Around Co-Working And Co-Living Spaces And "The 20th Century Fox Song Glitch" with Leah McHugh 46:55
In today's episode, I have my good friend Leah McHugh on the show where we discuss the differences and buzz around co-working spaces and co-living spaces. Leah McHugh has been traveling for the best part of the last 10 years and doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. She got sick of fighting with TSA, so developed liquid-free shampoos and conditioners called Get Dirty With Me. You can use the hair powders dry for hair refreshing or add water for hair washing... Which is awesome because this is annoying at airports and Leah came up with a solution! We mention this briefly at the beginning of the episode and then we jump into our topic. Leah has been travelling all over the world and has tried out both co-living and co-working spaces... Whereas at the time of recording I hadn't tried out either. I have since been to a few co-working spaces and loved them, but now have my eyes set on trying out a co-living space I've linked to down below in the resources section. In this episode, we discuss the difference between the two and why you would want to be using either one. Leah brings her experience to the table in this episode and really gets be excited to try a few of the places out she mentions on the show Enjoy the episode dudes and dudettes! 1 TMD 016 : Things To Consider When Travel Planning and “An Uncomfortable Bus Ride In Guatemala” with Jacob Marek 56:50
In today's episode, I have my good friend Jacob Marek from IntroverTravels on the show and we discuss traveling planning. At the time we recorded this episode Jacob hadn't left on his trip yet, but on the day this episode was published he's currently in Ecuador. Jacob Marek is the Founder & Chief Explorer at IntroverTravels. He designs life-changing, nature-inspired travel experiences. As an "Entreprenomad" as he likes to call himself, Jacob spends several months each year working, living, and traveling abroad to grow his business and find unique local experiences for his clients. His hobbies include nature, astronomy, and drinking great coffee and beer. Seeing as Jacob has been planning for a long trip, plus several trips in the future, I thought he was the perfect person to bring onto the show to talk about travel planning. There are certain things people overlook... And we make sure they're not overlooked anymore! Enjoy this episode dudes and dudettes! *fist bump* Show notes can be found over at https://TMDShow.com/16…

1 TMD 015 : The Importance Of Social Media On The Road and "The Incident In The U.S. Navy Mess Hall" with Rachel Pedersen 54:06
In today's episode, I have Rachel Pedersen on the show as my co-host to talk about how important social media is on the road as a digital nomad. We talk about Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Quora, YouTube and Snapchat... Along with why you should be using them. Rachel and I have known each other for a year or so now and as we mention on the show, we had the chance to meet in San Diego in October 2016. Rachel helps people to become rockstar social media managers with her killer program, Social Media University. She's been a social media manager for a long time and briefly talks about how she fell into it during her intro in our conversation. Rachel previously wrote a guest post talking about who should be using what social media platform depending on who your audience is. So I wanted to bring her back on, this time on the show, to talk to use about why each one is important and how you can make the most out of each platform. 1 TMD 013 : 9 Annoying Distractions For Digital Nomads and "The Riot in India" with Boom Shikha 54:18
In today's episode, I have Boom Shikha on the show and we cover 9 different distractions a lot of digital nomads seem to suffer from once they hit the road. These are things we've either both experienced ourselves or we've seen others suffer from. Boom Shikha is a serial entrepreneur, wanderluster, online-business owner, yogi, author, and avid meditator. She helps people become Digital Nomads through her website, The Millionaire Hippie. I've known Boom for a little while now but this was our first time jumping on a call and what an amazing conversation we had. It's crazy what distracts people when you're on the road. It takes a lot of concentration for me to not procrastinate and to hunker on down and do the work I know I should be doing. However, once I get into a flow I can get lots of shit done... It's just getting into that rhythm in the first place! Hopefully, in this episode, you'll take note of the major distractions most people encounter and be able to eliminate them before they become an issue! Ray Blakney worked as a computer programmer in Fortune 500 companies, Silicon Valley startups and the government for about 10 years before becoming a full-time entrepreneur in 2008. He became a location independent entrepreneur in 2012 (though he did not find out it was called that until 2016). He specializes in bootstrapping online education businesses and is current projects include LiveLingua.com, Onmatu.com, my400words.com, and twiducate.com. He also recently ventured into angel investing and is a majority owner of an artisanal chocolate factory in the Philippines. Ray is a very interesting dude... As you'll find out at the end of the episode with his travel story. But he also knows his shit. Ray has worked with some big companies to help them grow their traffic organically, mainly through SEO, and has been extremely successful in doing so (he talks about this in his intro). So with Ray's history, he's the perfect person to come on and talk about SEO because I'll be honest, I don't really know much. So I learned a lot from today's episode too!
