On this show, Teepee and Theo discuss the Lahaina, Maui wildfires of August 8, 2023. Among one of the deadliest fires in U.S. history and certainly in the history of Hawaii. Why was water not released in time to be used by firefighters? Why were emergency and tsunami alarms not sounded by the Hawaiian Emergency Management Agency? The incompetence of the Maui officials response to the emergency is mind-boggling, and the responses they have given for their negligence are even more mind-boggling. Reports have come out that roads were blocked, causing more Hawaiians to perish in the flames. One Maui resident, a lawyer, bugged out of her house with "Water Permit Applications" along with clothing as she was fleeing, knowing the paperwork would be incredibly important because Maui has a history of water being directed by officials to please the tourist industries, instead of being used for the people. Some Maui residents wonder if the emergency is being exploited by the wealthy and well-connected to grab water and land. Would it be so hard to imagine a case of disaster capitalism? The Talk Guys also discuss the Maui police chief, who is no stranger to tragedy. Sleepy Joe showed up after his vacation was over, and his speech to the people of Maui is very moving and from the heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected people in Hawaii.
