When you hear the term “The Gilded Age” which describes a period in US History that began after the Civil War and lasted until the end of the 19th century, you probably think of a period of industrialization, new technologies and economic growth. You might also think of names such as Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie and Morgan, all of whom achieved great wealth and influence during that time. But, have you ever thought about the different types of food of the Gilded Age, and how it was prepared and presented?

In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with Becky Diamond, food writer, research historian and author of the book, “The Gilded Age Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from America’s Golden Era”. Becky will tell us about the food of the Gilded Age including stories about railroads and dining, picnic baskets, the rise of restaurants and a food making demonstration at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

Becky will also talk about a few of the recipes in her book, which include one called Aunt Lizzie’s Pineapple Pie that was handed down to her through her own family from her great-great aunt.
