In episode 18, I do a collab with the amazing Natalie Welch!! Natalie is a registered dietitian, nutritionist, and health coach (she literally wears all the hats!) who specializes in working with moms during both the prenatal and postpartum periods. We dive deep into so many interesting topics! We discuss the concept of Matrescence (a new concept for me) which is the transition into motherhood. Natalie highlights the lack of education and support for women during this transition and emphasizes the importance of holistic preparation for motherhood as well. Natalie opens up about her own personal experience of becoming a mom and the challenges that she faced. We discuss the need for comprehensive care that includes mental health therapy, nutrition support, physical therapy/pelvic floor PT, etc. Natalie mentions the importance of nutrition and self-care during the preconception and postpartum periods. She explains the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. Natalie also shares a lot of information on 2 programs that she offers: Renewed Mama (which focuses on postpartum nutrition and recovery) and Postpartum Prep for Moms (which prepares expectant mothers for the postpartum period). She also discusses some fun and exciting services that she is going to be adding onto her business as well! If you are a mom, soon-to-be mom, or wannabe mom -- give this episode a listen!

Key Takeaways:

  • Matrescence refers to the transition into motherhood and encompasses the physical, emotional, and hormonal changes that occur during this time.
  • There is a lack of education and support for women during the matrescence period, and more awareness and resources are needed.
  • Preparation for motherhood should include a holistic approach that addresses nutrition, mental health, physical well-being, and relationships.
  • A registered dietitian has gone through rigorous education, training, and certification, while a nutritionist can have various backgrounds and may not be regulated or accredited.
  • Proper nutrition can support mental health, healing, and breast milk supply during the postpartum period.
  • She encourages moms to prioritize self-discovery and self-care during the postpartum period, embracing the transformation and growth that comes with motherhood.
