Liza Gundowry is Miss Mauritius 2022/23. As an official ambassador of Mauritius, she will represent her country at Miss World 2023 in India.
By day, Liza is a Senior Education Consultant and a Studies Facilitator, assisting students at the University of Oxford to better navigate their studies. She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Oxford, and a Bachelor’s degree from University College London and El Colegio de México. She has an academic background in international relations and conflict resolution. Liza is also a freelance presenter and has previously worked for the likes of MTV, Radio Plus, and the Mauritius Open Air Festival in London.
Since a young age, Liza has been passionate about music and theatre, attending a weekend performing arts school alongside her weekday school studies.
Liza’s Beauty With A Purpose project, Nou Later Nou Lafors (which can be translated to “Our roots, our power”), aims to combat poverty and food insecurity by empowering women to become self-sufficient and grow their own crops. Having grown up in Sainte Croix, an underprivileged area of Mauritius, Liza is no stranger to the socioeconomic challenges faced by residents in similar communities. Her project focuses on providing support to women from Sainte Croix, offering relief and sustainable solutions to families struggling to afford basic food necessities and maintain a balanced diet.
As a strong advocate for women's empowerment and with a background in researching the subject in Mauritius, Liza recognises the significance of using her platform as Miss Mauritius to make a tangible impact on the lives of women.
Additionally, in line with her commitment to education, Liza has also implemented a school awareness program as part of her project. This program visits schools across Mauritius, educating children about the importance of local food production and cultivating crops at home.
Finally, Nou Later Nou Lafors aims to contribute to a more environmentally friendly Mauritius.
