In this episode, we chat with Tom Shone. A movie buff from a young age, Tom has been intricately involved in the world of film ever since including being the Sunday Times film critic, and writing for publications such as Vogue, The New Yorker, and the New York Times.

He is now also a prolific author having written multiple books ranging from retrospectives on Tarantino, Scorcese and Woody Allen, to the brilliant "The Nolan Variations", a collaboration with Chris Nolan, and even a novel, set in the literary world of New York, where he now spends most of his time.

Clive James described Tom as "A clever film columnist who can also write a wise book: two attributes that don't often go together".

Tom shares with us all the steps in his amazing story, including:

  • How he loved to escape into the worlds of Narnia and Star Wars in his early years
  • How he initially resisted 'creative expression'
  • The simplicity and power of simply admitting what you want
  • The difference between Spielberg and Scorsese (and McCartney and Lennon)
  • The importance of thinking back to what you loved as a kid
  • How it is only when the walls of the house come down, that you can see the true terrain
