Optional benefits (sometimes referred to as voluntary benefits) have been around a long time, but typically offerings were limited to employee or dependent life coverage. Times have changed and optional benefits can play an important role in a comprehensive benefit plan by offering employees the choice of a number of insurance options at preferred group rates. Derek Weir will speak to what Medavie discovered about optional benefits in their national survey of working Canadians and how plan sponsors can build value in their group plan through optional benefits.
