RELEASED IN NOVEMBER 2004 IN JAPAN AND NORTH AMERICA FOR THE SONY PLAYSTATION 2 CONSOLE, IT WAS THE FIFTH GAME IN THE FRANCHISE, WRITTEN, DIRECTED, AND PRODUCED BY KOJIMA, AND SERVES AS THE SERIES PREQUEL. IT IS ALSO BY FAR CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR METAL GEAR SOLID GAME BY FANS, THOUGH IT SOLD SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN MGS, MGS 2, MGS V, AND MGS 5 AT ONLY 3.5 MILLION COPIES. IT WAS A DEPARTURE FROM THE PREVIOUS METAL GEAR SOLID GAMES, WHICH EMPHASISED STEALTH IN VERY SMALL AND CLAUSTROPHOBIC ENVIRONMENTS. SNAKE EATER OPENED UP THOSE STEALTH CONVENTIONS AND ADDED A WHOLE CARDBOARD BOXLOAD (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) OF NEW TRICKS, GADGETS, AND SYSTEMS THAT WOULD AID THE PLAYER IN COMPLETING THEIR MISSION; OR IN JUST MESSING AROUND WITH GUARDS FOR HOURS. A LOT OF THESE ADDITIONS HAVE BECOME SERIES STAND BYS, INCLUDING THE FULTON RECOVERY SYSTEM, THE ABILITY TO CHANGE CAMOUFLAGE, THE STAMINA GAUGE AND THE INJURY TREATMENT SYSTEM, AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE; CLOSE QUARTERS COMBAT OR CQC. THERE WAS ALSO A SECOND RELEASE, WHICH MOST FANS OF THE GAME NOW DON'T REALIZE IS THE GAME THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED, CALLED METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SUBSISTENCE, ALSO FOR THE PS2. THIS RERELEASE UPDATED MANY THINGS INSIDE THE GAME, AND ALSO ADDED PORTS OF METAL GEAR AND METAL GEAR 2: SOLID SNAKE AND A COMPETITIVE ONLINE MODE, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY IT ADDED A BRAND NEW FULLY 3D CAMERA, WHICH FOR MANY, ACTUALLY MADE THE GAME PLAYABLE.
