Host Xavier Mejia sits down with director/producer Shaleece Haas to discuss the story of 19 year old Bennett Wallace in the film REAL BOY. REAL BOY is an intimate story of a family in transition. As 19-year-old Bennett Wallace navigates early sobriety, late adolescence, and the evolution of his gender identity, his mother makes her own transformation from resistance to acceptance of her trans son. Along the way, both mother and son find support in their communities, reminding us that families are not only given, but chosen. REAL BOY has screened more than 180 times in 23 countries, earning 20 awards. For more info: realboymovie.com/ Shaleece Haas is a documentary filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA. She is the co-producer of The Genius of Marian, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was broadcast on POV in 2014. She has directed and produced several shorts including Old People Driving, City Fish, and Awardwinninggir. In addition to her work as a director/producer, Shaleece is an instructor of video storytelling at UCLA Extension and UC Berkeley’s Advanced Media Institute.
