It is first important to understand that this is a pregnancy. The problem is that the pregnancy is in the wrong location. The word ectopic simply means, outside of the uterus.
Now, there are three different locations where an ectopic pregnancy can occur.
The first location is the fallopian tube (this is by far the most commonplace), inside the ovary, or inside the abdomen. Ovarian pregnancies and abdominal pregnancies are extremely rare. Through Dr. Boyds 26 years of practice, he has never seen either one of those types of ectopic pregnancies.
So, for the great majority of doctors and patients, the term ectopic pregnancy is referring to a pregnancy in the fallopian tube. Unfortunately, the pregnancy is not viable in this situation. The fallopian tube is too small and the pregnancy cannot be transferred to the uterus.
One of two things will happen in this situation. Either the fallopian tube will rupture as the baby grows, or the baby will dissolve on its own and go away over time. Those are the only two scenarios that exist. Your doctor will talk to you about a drug called methotrexate, surgery, or simply waiting to see if the pregnancy dissolves on its own.
