Episode 111: Parenting Through a Mental Health Crisis with Vanessa Elias
Manage episode 382152146 series 3313078
Most of us know someone or we ourselves are dealing with the mental health crisis with our children. The mental health crisis in this country among young adults has risen to a level never seen before.
As a parent you can feel helpless on how to help your child, especially when your child is a legal adult of 18.
Vaness Elias is the founder of Thrive with a Guide, LLC. She is a mental health activist, certified parent coach, speaker, and writer specializing in whole-family synergy and well-being. She works with her clients to problem solve, shift their lens, and develop actionable steps to change and improve life in their home. Vanessa is also a group facilitator for both the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Authentic Connections Groups (AC Groups). Vanessa and I covered several topics:
- How to know when your child is having a serious mental crisis vs. "typical" teen angst.
- What it means to "shift the lens" when your child is in crisis.
- The importance of self-compassion as a parent.
- How to have effective conversations with your child without nagging.
- The unintended consequences of how we parent our kids.
- The documents you must have in place when your child turns 18.
- The impact of loneliness on our physical and mental well being.
