Eric's passion for BMX was sparked by a childhood love for bikes, but it was his cousin’s influence and a desire to do something different that kept him riding. Despite the pressures to conform to more traditional sports like basketball or football, Eric chose a path less traveled, often facing ridicule from both his peers and competitors. But he didn’t let that stop him. Instead, he honed his skills, becoming known for his explosive speed and relentless determination, eventually turning pro in his early 20s.
The conversation also touches on Eric's efforts to document the contributions of Black riders in BMX through his self-produced documentary "Black to BMX." He shares stories of other Black riders who faced similar obstacles, including outright racism at races and the challenges of competing in a sport that was not designed with them in mind. Eric’s insights into how BMX has evolved, especially with the introduction of the X Games and changes in the sport's dynamics, offer a unique perspective on the intersection of race, culture, and athletics.
