Your Daily Prayer 🙏 Daniel 5:17
Today’s daily devotional is based on the story of King Belshazzar and the mysterious writing on the wall. King Belshazzar, the son of Nebuchadnezzar, did not honor God as his father did. During a grand feast, a phantom hand wrote cryptic words on the wall, leaving the king and his court in fear and confusion. Daniel, known for his wisdom and ability to interpret dreams, revealed that these words foretold the end of Belshazzar's reign and the fall of Babylon to the Persians.
STORY
Bible in a Year: The Writing on the Wall
Scripture
Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
Daniel 5:24
Have you ever ignored a warning, only to regret it later?
King Belshazzar experienced this in a dramatic way. Despite knowing about his father Nebuchadnezzar's humbling encounter with God, Belshazzar chose to live pridefully and arrogantly. During a lavish feast, a disembodied hand appeared, writing cryptic words on the wall. Fear gripped the room, and none of Belshazzar’s wise men could interpret the message.
Have you ever faced a situation where you were unsure of the next steps?
Daniel was summoned, and he revealed that the message was from God. The words, "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN," meant that Belshazzar’s days as king were numbered, he had been weighed and found wanting, and his kingdom would be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. This pronouncement was a direct consequence of Belshazzar’s refusal to honor God and his reliance on his own strength and wisdom.
Are there areas in your life where you rely more on yourself than on God?
Belshazzar’s story is a sobering reminder of the importance of humility and reverence towards God. It teaches us that earthly power and wealth are fleeting and that true security lies in recognizing and submitting to God's authority. Just as Belshazzar's kingdom was taken from him, we too can lose our blessings if we fail to acknowledge God in our lives.
What steps can you take today to ensure that you are honoring God in all areas of your life?
REFLECTION
Reflect on your attitude towards God’s warnings and guidance. Are there areas in your life where you are ignoring His call? Take time to seek God’s wisdom and direction, acknowledging His sovereignty over your life.
Pray for a heart that is open to correction and a spirit that seeks to honor God in every decision.
We have to remind ourselves our identity is in Christ, period. What we do does not define us. Our identity is in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross.
PRAYER
“Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.”
DANIEL 5:17
Dear heavenly father, through today's reading I can see that the writing is on the wall. It is evident through the life of King Belshazzar that You desire nothing less than my complete devotion as I live my life. I declare that I will not give in to the drunkenness of pleasure and self gratification. I will not choose short term satisfaction in exchange for long-term pain. Therefore, I will set my priorities on the things above, I will dedicate my life to honor You in all that I do Lord. I choose to activate the same willpower that Daniel possessed when he had the choice to choose the riches of this world but chose the riches of Your Word instead. Daniel Understood that it is better to be blessed by the Lord than to compromise for the blessings of man. With all of this truth in Daniel 5 I make the conscious choice to live it out through my life! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
