As the Titanic sank and passengers were evacuated, one passenger grabbed three oranges from their stateroom. They left behind jewels, money, and fine clothes and chose to take these three oranges to help them, perhaps as they abandoned the doomed ship. What had been so valuable just hours earlier in the day was worth nothing because of the change in circumstances. This life-or-death situation changed what they valued. In our text, Paul is at the end of his life. He advises on how to deal with a changing situation. Like the passengers on the Titanic, Paul urges us to be aware of the situation and to choose what we need to survive. We must realize where we are and look at what we value. What are we holding onto that we think we cannot live without? Are those things precious in an eternal sense? The Bible tells us that all things of the world will melt away in a fervent heat. Paul proclaims that the night is over, and we must cast off the darkness and put on the garment of light. What we wear to bed is not appropriate to wear out in public. We must prepare ourselves for the coming dawn.
