20 A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish man despises his mother.
21 Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense,
but a man of understanding walks straight ahead.
- Prov 15:20-21ESV
A GLAD FATHER
The children’s lives either honor or dishonor the parents. The obedient son is respectful of his parents. Thus, he honors the Lord, who commands, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you" (Ex 20:12; Eph 6:1–3). Consequently, the parents of a wise son experience gladness because of his obedience to them and to God. In contrast, the foolish hates his parents. He resents the rules and discipline even when it's given in a loving way (Prov 15:5; Prov 12:1, Eph 6:4). Children are unique. And they respond differently even when they have the same parents. One child honors his parents by wisely fearing the Lord and obeying them. Whereas, another child rebels against them and rejects the Lord. Nevertheless, every child is accountable to the Lord for his attitudes and actions. And, it is the solemn duty of parents to nurture every child in the right direction.
The foolish child chooses to ignore discipline and ignores God. ‘Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense.”[v.21a] Why? It is because there can be temporary pleasures and amusements that sin may bring (Heb 11:25). Thus, the one lacking discernment has fun with sin for he fails to take it seriously and see its dangers ahead (Prov 11:19). This indicates that he has no relationship with God and is dead spiritually. It’s sad that Paul writes about these unrighteous people "who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.[ 2 Thes 2:12 ]" The Devil deludes people by suggesting that sinful pleasure is the true pleasure. But, true pleasure is found only in doing God's will. Paul writes, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”[Rom 12:1,2] The psalmist also writes: "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psa 16:11).
