2023.05.01 – 0851 – Your ‘Goldilocks’ Vocal Folds

‘Breathy (or ‘aspirated’) onset’ – when they don’t close enough

This happens when there is a lack of firm closure of the vocal folds, so excessive air escapes through them as you create sound and the resulting voice is ‘breathy’.

‘Glottal’ onset – the folds are brought together before air pressure is increased, and are ‘blown apart’ to start phonation

The vocal folds are over compressed and brought together with force to initiate sound. The air pressure then builds up below the folds before sound is released in a mini explosion. Excessive air pressure, when released, is traumatic to the delicate tissues of the vocal folds.

‘Smooth’ onset – this is when the air flow and the folds come together at the same time, resulting in a balanced sound.

The folds are correctly positioned, the subglottal air pressure (that’s the pressure of air from the lungs) is correct, the sound is efficiently created.
