About Gary McGann
After studying, Gary McGann got a job with the Controller and Auditor General’s office and spent seven years in the civil service before joining mobile technology company Ericsson in 1978. He spent nearly 11 years there, eventually becoming the company’s chief financial officer. He then took up a role with drinks company, Gilbey’s, in 1988 and became its CEO in 1991. In 1994, the Irish Government appointed him as Group Chief Executive of Aer Lingus, a position he held until 1998. The job was to overhaul the company and he succeeded in keeping it afloat with several restructuring measures.

Then in 1998, he joined Jefferson Smurfit as chief financial officer and eventually became its CEO in 2002, leading a successful merger with Dutch company Kappa to create a truly global business of Smurfit Kappa that we know today. He finished there in 2015.
He has also held several chairman positions in his career in companies such as the Dublin Airport Authority, Aryzta, Sicon (Sisk), AON Ireland, and most recently, Flutter Entertainment. He board seats with UDG, and Green REIT. He is a former President of IBEC, and in the "not for profit sector" Gary is a director of Barnardos and The Ireland Funds.
