This Is Woman's Work with Nicole Kalil

In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. A bus driver recalls the highs and lows of his life in this dark and blackly comic monologue. This is a bit of an experiment for me, inspired by the popular character monologues written by Alan Bennett that were broadcast on British television in the 1990s. If people like it, I may make it the start of an occasional series called "Talking Dead".“THE BUS DRIVER’S FEAR OF CHANGE” by Jasper L’Estrange. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. You can hear me discuss this story by listening to an upcoming episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem, my bonus show for paying YouTube channel members and Patreon supporters.CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings may contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. I’m sure they’ll be glad to hear from you. The stories I choose to read I choose because I like them - not that they're all perfect or that I agree with all the sentiments expressed, but because I find something in them to recommend them. If I were to read only what I consider to be the few perfect vintage horror stories I should have recorded about twenty and stopped. But everything I read has something in it that appeals to my taste. Tastes differ, so you might not agree with my choices, but that doesn't make you right.💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀Supporting my workIf you like, you can donate in the following ways:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/encryptedpodYouTube channel membership: https://www.youtube.com/c/EnCryptedClassicHorror/joinOne-off donation: https://ko-fi.com/encryptedpodcastYou can now also say THANKS (on YouTube) with a SUPER THANKS!LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE - it all helps the show survive and prosper! If you want to discuss the show, talk business, or have any ideas for stories you'd like to hear in future episodes, contact me: encryptedpod@gmail.com💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀About the story:"The Bus Driver’s Fear of Change” © Jasper L’Estrange (2025).Music credits:Music used : "LOST BETWEEN SPACES” composed and produced by “Vivek Abhishek”Music link: https://youtu.be/jIak25MK33U?si=cK18_TduDf1LM5CXSUBSCRIBE us on YOUTUBE: https://bit.ly/3qumnPH Follow on Facebook : https://bit.ly/33RWRtP Follow on Instagram : https://bit.ly/2ImU2JVSound effects: All sound effects sourced at Freesound*.*Used with the following licence: https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/ The recording was created using Audacity and BandLab. Two friends hiking in the French hills of the Jura bordering Switzerland have a strange encounter with a mysterious girl at a derelict farmhouse. CREATOR’S NOTE: My recordings contain a mixture of audio narration, sound effects, and music because that’s what I enjoy making and what I personally like to listen to. I also try and do accents and different voices to differentiate between the characters as I think it makes for a more enjoyable listen. Lots of my listeners and subscribers agree. If you don’t, consider yourself lucky to be on a website that has hundreds and thousands of other storytellers to listen to. In Reelfoot Lake, a backwoods bayou of the American South, lives an outcast freak – a lonely swamp dweller whose fishy features have earned him a strange moniker. Mystery and local superstition surround him, but when the Baxter brothers seek their revenge will they uncover the truth about the one they call…”Fish Head”. This original recording is an audio presentation (with sound effects and music) by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Fish Head” by Irvin S. Cobb (1913). NOTE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION OF "SLOUGH" A number of helpful people have gotten in touch to tell me I should have pronounced "slough" as "slew" as that is how it is pronounced in that part of the world. However, it was not a word known to me (not used much in British English, at least not in the sense meant in this story) so I referred to Merriam-Webster dictionary which suggested US speakers (except in New England) would pronounce the word "slew" or "sloo", but added that British English speakers would usually say "slau" (like the English town) even if they were refererring to an American swamp. As a British English speaker myself that was what I went with. As I'm rather tired of people assuming I don't do any research when I record these damn stories, I thought I'd set the record straight. No need for anyone else to tell me it should be "slew". Any issues, take it up with the dictionary people. 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 If you like, you can donate in the following ways: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/encryptedpod YouTube channel membership: https://www.youtube.com/c/EnCryptedClassicHorror/join One-off donation: https://ko-fi.com/encryptedpodcast You can now also say THANKS (on YouTube) with a SUPER THANKS!
