On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Today’s guest is Chris Hartenstein - husband of 28 years, father of eight (8) kids, owner of a 2nd generation family business, and founder of The New Frontier Ministries. We talk a lot today about identity and initiation and helping usher our kids into what God has created them to be…through everyday life and also through times of set apart ceremony and rights of passage - something his ministry invests in helping families do well. Today’s topic is a bit of a departure from previous podcasts…however, it is an absolute necessity for us as Dads. Part of our “purpose” as dads is “provision” - that’s both monetary and safety. And today we’re going to key in specifically on the physical safety aspect. I don’t know about many of you and your households, but the physical safety aspect is something we don’t talk a lot about…and frankly, can be a bit uncomfortable - especially when talking with a spouse about this issue - but Andy Murphy makes this topic of safety approachable and he gives us some great tips and starting points for our mindset to get started. The best way to connect with Andy is to start with his website: www.TheSecureDad.com There you can be linked to his social media, podcast, book, courses, and more!…
Today’s guest is Morgan Snyder. Morgan is a husband, father of two, author of the recent book “Becoming a King,” and founder and curator of BecomeGoodSoil - which is both the name of his podcast and organization - which is a fellowship offering guidance for a few who are looking for “the narrow road” of becoming the kind of person whom God can entrust his kingdom. Morgan has served for over 20 years with RansomedHeart (“Wild at Heart”) ministries and joins us today to drop serious wisdom gained over the past 20 years of intentional submission to God and His shaping in the trenches of life. You can connect best with what Morgan is doing at www.becomingaking.com which will link you to his podcast, blogs, and more! If today’s episode blessed you - it challenged, encouraged, or equipped you in any way - please leave a 5-star rating and/or review...and even more so, would you share it with another Dad In The Trenches that needs to hear it?!??!…
Something a little different than normal in today’s episode. Join Aaron as he unpacks how to truly “own” your circumstances in life using the “C.O.R.E. Process” and discusses the inhibitions we set up in our minds as prohibitions. Given today’s crazy cultural environment (physical and political), you won’t want to miss this episode. How do you define “success”? We probably all have some common misaligned societal notions for success: job title, paycheck, retirement account $$$ figure, dream house, etc. But is that really it??? Today, my friend, Jonathan Kennedy Jr. joins us to help reframe and redefine the idea of success. He unpacks the “5 forms of capital” we all possess and are gifted to steward, as well as developing multi-generational vision for your family, along with other nuggets of gold that will inspire and challenge you. You won’t want to miss this one... Joe Prim of Ever Vigilant joins us on today’s episode. I’ve known Joe for over a year now and this one is bitter sweet. Since recording this episode earlier in the year, Joe has realigned priorities and is pulling back for his work in the “world of men.” So this episode not only encompasses his work to help men to “prepare, defend, and lead” (which we talk about), but it is a salute to Joe and his work. We do a send-off tribute to Joe in true DadInTheTrenches style as well at the mid-break. Give it a listen and go follow Joe if you aren’t already. Welcome back and to the start of Season 2! Ken Harrison joins us to kick things off right with some big-time challenge. Ken is a husband and father and the Chairman and CEO of Promise Keepers and author of “Rise of the Servant Kings.” Ken tells it like it is and we cover a lot of ground: the return of Promise Keepers in July, pride, being a disciple of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Ken’s unorthodox parenting advice to his son. You can connect with Ken and the work he is doing at the following: Instagram: @kenrharrison @promise_keepers www.promisekeepersevent.com www.promisekeepers.org Some of the other books and great resources mentioned during our podcast are: “Every Man’s Battle” by Stephen Arterburn “The Indwelling Spirit” by Andrew Murray “My Upmost For His Highest” by Oswald Chambers This podcast is also being released ahead of Father’s Day - and (like last year) we’re doing some giveaway packages (which includes Ken’s book). Head over to Instagram at @dadinthetrenches for more details!…
Tim Ferrara joins us on today’s episode. Tim is a husband, father of 2, the curator of “Discerning Dad,” and author of the book “Everyday Discernment.” We talk about the importance of discernment as it relates to us as fathers, husbands, and as followers of Jesus. In today's fast-paced, distracted, information-saturated (and opinion-saturated), social media-inundated, hedonistic, and subjective truth culture, it is important, now more than ever, for Christians to be able to discern Truth from "kinda-sort-a", "sounds spiritual", "feels good to me" truth and know how to live the Christian life. Additionally, we’ll be doing a giveaway for two (2) copies of Tim’s book...check out the dadinthetrenches Instagram for details! Patrick Antonucci joins us on today’s episode. Patrick is a husband, father of 5, and the creator and curator of Dad Hackers. A short “off the cuff” unscheduled episode with Aaron regarding the new year. You can get a copy of the mentioned “New Year’s Scorecard” at www.dadinthetrenches.com.
I've always been struck by the immediacy of the disciples response to drop everything when Jesus said to them, "follow me" in Matthew 4, Mark 1, Luke 5, and John 1. What would cause someone to just up and leave everything at the drop of a hat at an invitation like that? The oddity of that response by the disciples all changed, when I came across the historical Jewish context behind those two words: "follow me." I talk about these very things on Episode 19 and the implications for us as Dads...enjoy! If you haven't already and are a regular listener on Apple podcasts, would you consider leaving a 5-star rating and also a written review? Maybe a simple sentence or two about your favorite episode so far!?!? Thanks so much! If you aren’t already, go follow @dadinthetrenches on Instagram.…

What is the basis for your faith? Is it because it’s true? Or some other reason? Today’s guest rocks our world and expands on the idea that we don’t have to have “blind faith” to believe in God, follow Jesus, and trust the scriptures - we can believe because the evidence reveals that it is true. Meet Jim Wallace…Jim is a husband and father, has been a cold-case detective in Los Angeles, a college professor, a youth pastor, he is an author, an apologist, and has been on Dateline NBC numerous times along with an appearance in the 2016 movie “God is Not Dead 2” as an expert witness. We talk about what being a detective is like, apologetics and how he came to faith in Jesus, the “next generation” and the Church’s responsibility, marriage, and wooing kids to the gospel.
